I have learned a lot in these forums. Sometimes it has been real food for thought, sometimes it has been nothing but a ~chuckle~ or two about the foibles of humans in this medium.

It seems to work better if you approach this with a sense of humor.

Hmm I do think my opinion has shifted at times due to something written here.

I know what you mean about people not shifting their opinions much at all. Most folks can be sure to say the same thing regarding a topic. Kinda funny.

I think though there is more to learn than is actually written. It is a social structure and there is some stuff you can observe and learn from.

I think it is good. Forums are good ("Bacon tastes goooood!") and annoying too at times.

All in all, yeah there is a function here beyond hearing ourselves speak, a healthy one even.

...The things I have noticed in all them are, an incredible amount of nit picking, and the fact that people are very seldom swayed in their opinions.

Is this actually communicating? Or are we all here to just make ourselves feel better about our views?

Jeff

When I first signed up for CM, I had a few thoughts on things that were swayed by exposing myself to different and varying views.  I like that about CM.  It doesn't happen frequently, but I like the rare moments of AHA!  When a new way of looking at things rattles my cage and shakes my reality.

That said, there are more times that a topic is just beaten to death by some who can't seem to ever concede a point, or refuse to acknowledge that their way isn't the correct way for every living breathing soul on the planet.  When that happens, if I'm not in thrall to the overall chaos of it, I just meander off to find my entertainment elsewhere.   All in all, that's the real reason I come here.  For the entertainment, and as long as there are Anteaters to Zephy's to amuse me, I'll continue to indulge.

22 pages sounds like an awful lot of communication to me. I don't understand why it is necessary for a certain percentage of participants to change their opinion one way or another.

Communication is an exchange of concepts and/or information, the transfer of ideas from one person to another. 22 pages of people shouting into the wind and not listening to anything anyone else is saying is not communication. It's just 22 pages of self-indulgent posturing.

I've been wondering something similar to your question myself lately.   I think many people are looking for validation of some kind...and acceptance.  Then there are those who just like to spew, regardless of who's reading.  Or those whose ego is so big my computer screen can barely contain their words.  Are they communicating?  Sure....we all are, in our own special way...even flawed drummers.  [:D]

That's it right there. Lot of jostling for position here, lots of people looking to elevate their status in the herd by showing how smart they are compared to everyone else who's posting in the thread. I don't think I've ever seen a forum with so many people desperately clamoring for external validation. It's like watching bugs in a jar, to steal a phrase from a friend who no longer posts here. Fascinating to watch, but you don't necessarily want to get into the jar with them.

Naughty Panda, "bugs in a jar"! bwahahahaha[sm=oddballs.gif]

The ones that annoy me are the ones that would like to believe they are not one of the bugs.

Well said Grasshopper!

lizi -> RE: Communication? (3/1/2010 11:46:02 AM)

Communication....I think yes it exists here and on other forums. The people reading any thread exists far beyond the ones who choose to post. As with most things in life it's the ones who bray the loudest and are the most obstinate that get attention focused on them, but there are lots of people in the background watching and maybe even learning from the various topics that are presented.

Heck yes I've had my opinions swayed, I am not the supreme all knowing being on any topic so I look for information to add to what I know on anything. I think the biggest thing the forums on here specifically have done for me was to help me find my way in a new area in my life and I still learn from what I read here all the time.

Perhaps what you've asked about whether internet forums are honestly for communicating or if they serve the narcissistic purpose of reflecting ones own beliefs back into a mirror endlessly can be related to the old saying that you get what you put into it. If someone is here for the glorification of themself then they get gratification from saying the same thing over and over and seeing it reflected back. If someone is here to find more information and knowledge they can get that too. It depends on the person and what their intent/goal is I think.

My guess is that would be most of them.

It could be said people in a gunfight are communicating.

Communication Breakdown

Louve00 -> RE: Communication? (3/1/2010 2:22:36 PM)

I know what you mean about a 20 something page thread going nowhere.  It probably happens quite a bit.  It happened once in a thread called feminism and again in a couple of gorean threads by an infamous couple who....well, we won't go there lol.  I think alot of those long threads boils down to ego and assumption, more than communication.   Nobody's seeking to learn anything but everyone has a need to get their point across.  So I guess, yea...it is communication.  Whether its worthwhile communication is a whole other thing, though.  I tend not to want to get into a real spitting contest, or into one of those "you are what I say you are because I said so (with links to prove it, too)!"  But every once in a while I read something I liked, or something that made a point that made a little light bulb go off in my head...or spurred a kind of anger at their ignorance or lack of seeing what they were doing.  Depending on how I am answered will help me understand (or learn) whats going on in that person's reasoning.

Alot of times I never get answered either.

And sometimes, the answer makes so little sense to me I don't count it as an answer and move on.   [sm=dunno.gif]

I think though, SteelofUtah said it best with his signature line and a link he had in it.  (I liked it so much I passed it on to other forums I read and saved the link [:)])    http://www.foamyfanatics.net/episodes/player.php?title=Forum+Bore+Em&file=forum

Missokyst -> RE: Communication? (3/1/2010 4:03:37 PM)

I think few people are swayed from their beliefs. They mostly have a premise in mind and lord help you if you do not fall in line with their reasoning. I run a few yahoo groups. And over the last 10 yrs the one thing I have demanded is that people will be civil or they will be gone.

When topics run and I start to see pages and pages of people basically saying the same thing in different ways in order to coerce others to their way of thinking, I WILL warn people first (once), then I will close the topic. What I find most interesting is that when I do this and things go their way, I get thanks. But, if things do not go their way I am vilified (in the last instance). as an "ignoramous".

When running a list one has to have a tough skin and a determination to keep things from festering. I have seen more than a few yahoo groups, munch lists, bdsm info lists, ect, shut down from inactivity because people DO unsubscribe or shut off their list mail due to too much strife. I do not allow that on my lists and each one of my lists have been very successful.

Since I have no power to change things here I have opted instead to change my behavior. I have some posters blocked so I can avoid being irritated.. and so I will not continue to try to get people to agree with me by continuing to argue my point, ad nausem.

Yes, some people will change their views based on a post. But they are more likely to do that from a single seed that has been implanted, rather than beat with that hoe until their eyes are bleeding into the ground.

I see no point to that.

I have been swayed here... not often but I have.

But there are 22 pages about whether or not being called a doormat is a good thing.

That seems silly to me

Aneirin -> RE: Communication? (3/1/2010 4:06:24 PM)

If you can communicate with flags via international flag code and semaphore and light via flashed morse and it's sound variety, why not bullets.
