Has self-realization ever hit you? - 2/20/2010 7:51:02 AM

Status: offline 		I recently had an idea for a new type of motorized valve.  This required me to conceptually design it - determine how to get a motor to rotate superslowly, find a place to supply a housing, work with material compatibilities, transmit motion into a sealed chamber, etc. - estimate a market size and determine a marketing strategy.  I'm still designing and trying to find low cost suppliers.

Somewhere along the way, it hit me - WOW!!!!  This is what being an engineer makes me able to do effortlessly.  Not everyone could do this.

Anyone else find yourself doing something routinely and then realizing that it wasn't routine in the least?

Yes, Steven. Mine is driving. I've always been an excellent driver, and one day, buzzing down the interstate, I noticed that I could "see" where lanes would open, and it made driving even more enjoyable for me. There was some of the same thing, to a degree, when I played football, and I've even noticed it when shopping at the holidays, in croweded stores

Status: offline 		Yep - was in surgery and the scrub nurse handed me the amputated leg. I realised that not everyone would have "handled" it as gracefully (pun intended). There are things in every job that others wouldn't be able to handle. Thats what makes it so great that we all have different aptitudes - for instance, if you asked me to use math in any practical sense, there would be buildings falling and wheels coming off cars. I'm more of a guesstimate sort of person.

Thanks for the gearhead input.

My price point is about $40 - $50,  I can get a stepper for about $5-$10 but would have to spend over $40 for the controller and would have to code the darn thing.  I've also looked at gear motors but they don't move slowly enough.

Most engineers I know (and I know many) don't have marketing strategy as a strong suit, because in my opinion, it takes 2 different mind sets.

But the hardest thing in the world of training is expert know-how transfer, because you just know how to do something... and that is very difficult to communicate.

Professionally or vocationally no, but only because it is in my professional background to notice these things, even in myself.

I've had self-realizations on a more emotional level however, and yes, they are great.

IMO engineers are excellent communicators.  We are taught what to say, to be direct, and to express things cleanly.  Engineers are notoriously bad spellers, though.

So if someone who is trained in the humanities reviews what an engineer wrote, he or she would find it lacking in cleverness and frequently misspelled.  But to my way of thinking, communication is about making yourself understood, and engineers are good at that.  With Powerpoint slides no less.

Status: offline 		Hooray DarkSteven, I could never do that, not a mechanically gifted bone in my body. 

I'm good at a few things, writing and making things pretty most of all.  I see incoherent ramblings and really terrible aesthetics and cringe, retreating back to my wonderfully articulate and pretty world.

Question: Is there a guaranteed pressure differential between the two areas you're valving off?

Status: offline 		Yay for Engineers! Without them we'd still be sitting around naked eating raw nuts and berries, and trying to figure out how to make stabby-thingies to kill the yummy furry critters with.

i had a realization this morning, doing my morning yoga practice and refining a pose - it hit me quite hard, the thought "wow, i can teach this stuff. i know this stuff." And not just superficially - but in depth.

Which is funny, because i've taught yoga and practiced yoga therapy for 2 years now. Ultimately my private practice will exclusively work with those in recovery from cancer treatment - if my Owner allows.

It's neat to have one of the sort of realizations you're talking about. And fun, and validating.
