Hey Julia, I love the way my hair looks when I put it in large hot rollers, then spray it while rollers are still in, take rollers out, wait a bit, like 15 or 20 minutes then flip head over, tousle with fingers, it give a perfect sexy tousled look, not too structured, it retains some of the "piece-y" look if you know what I mean.

I am also a huge fan of a little back combing then an unstructured french twist, very sexy for a night out or jeans and heels. Perfect for showing off one stellar piece of jewelry, like diamond studs or something.

Those cute styles you speak of do require an additional set of arms. Perhaps you could have a friend over who will hold parts of your hair while you do the twists or other things you are wanting.

Or as mentioned by another, go to a hair stylist school for a 'do'. I haven't been to any that were free, but they are often discounted considerably. Talk to one of the teachers, tell them what you are looking for and ask the teacher to put you with one of her more talented students -or- see if your hair can be the 'subject' of the day where several students are working on ya.

I just googled "high fashion hair" and apparently what I want is considered high fashion/high volume. I definitely think an extra pair of arms would be helpful. Typically when I do go drop 150 to get it cut once every 8 months or so, they have two or three people standing around me blowing it out, and it looks SO lovely when they do it, but lasts about a day.  I'll make some calls, and see if any of my friends have time to try some creative styling for me too, or at least help me pile it all up! :)

I have hair down to my ass, too. I just clicked on a video that was supposedly for "long hair". Ok, that is hardly long hair.
However, I'm glad this was brought up. I would also like to learn more ways of doing my own hair.

I usually do my hair similar to this when going out, though.

I do this every time I leave the house...

My hair is wavy and would be curly if I cut it shorter... it gives my hair direction and makes it look softer to roll it in hot rollers for as little as 10 minutes... I do not spray it though, no need to and hair spray is bad for the hair

LOL I know! Apparently if it's past your shoulders, it's considered really long.

How do you get the volume poofiness behind the headbands? My hair is pretty flat...

It looks like perhaps she did a banana clip and sprayed the front of it... although I could be incorrect... I look forward to beth's tips!

I understand the process was teasing it into submission, and then using a can of hair spray. It took a day of conditioner to get it back to 'normal'.

I still prefer the casual long and bouncing look she usually has, but every so often I let her play with a new look; usually for some function or event we have to attend.

Yeah, my hair is pretty flat, too. Teasing or back combing. Instructions

However, I just got some bumpits, which apparently also require teasing, but I'm still trying to get those figured out. I've only played with them once and I think they were pretty good for the first time.

I've been afraid of bumpits ever since I saw on textsfromlastnight something to the effect of "I was making out with this hot guy and his hand got stuck in my bumpit"  LOL...

Well, I hadn't really had to worry about that so much.

I also have really long hair--down to about the bottom of my rib cage.

I have an "up-do" that I really like that looks a lot more complicated than it actually is (usually I save it for when I'm running low on time and can't blow-dry my hair). I get compliments on it all the time. Basically, I just take small sections of hair, twist lightly and pin them up using large bobby pins until all my hair is pinned up and off my back.

It looks a little like this.

cute! Do you do like little french twists in the front? Do the parts look weird in between the twists?

That IS cute! I'm going to have to try that! I've been wanting to do some kind of twisty thing with my hair like that. You make it sound so easy. However, I would like to to be able to geve the twisted strands more shape and make them stand up more. I think if I could get some wires in the twisted strands, then I could make them stand out in all kinds of crazy ways.

I just found these hairstyles, though. Sadly, there were no instructions.

Take a look at youtube, there should be quite some instructional videos on there.

Many of the styles shown on the Bumpits site remind me of the movie Coneheads, though.

When i went out clubbing i'd do several flip ponytails then tie them up into buns.  People often complimented them and thought they looked a lot more complicated than they actually were to do.  i've got "Whinehouse" hair too, long, thick and wavy.
Here's a basic flip ponytail:
