I'm in the middle of this mid Atlantic blizzard. I bet there is at least two feet of snow out there and still snowing with no sign of letting up. It's so high, I can't open my storm doors to get out. Lot's of people in this area have lost power, over 200,000. I feel so fortunate not to have lost it thus far. I'm not a big planner, but it's times like these that lead the spontaneous and unplanned to think ahead. Yesterday, when all this started, I cooked a bunch of food so I'd have something even if it was cold. I pulled my car down near the street so I wouldn't have to shovel so much just to get out of here, whenever that's possible. I look at the window and it's a near blinding sea of stark white, growing and increasingly obscuring everything so that it becomes even more dominant and monolithic and overwhelming.

Anyone else out there stuck in all this? If so, how are you coping? What's it like where you are?

We've got a few inches, and the snow is not glistening and pretty like at other times. It's just plain stark white, like white death. The snow here is VERY wet too.

Wow OP, where are you?  We have a ton of snow here, but all of our utilities are working.

I'm in the DC area. It's a weird place: not north, not south and not as prepared as places up north are for things like this. That said, all the crews are out and working, at least that's what they say on the radio. The utilities seem to go every time there is a heavy wind. I'm grateful, albeit a tad surprised, that my power hasn't gone out...yet.

BTW, Katy, I appreciate your lyric quote. That tune was certainly one of my youthful all time favs, especially of The Doors.

When a blizzard like that hits Wisconsin, the first stop I make is to the liquor store. We had close to 100 inches of snow in each of the last 2 years. So far this year, 20 inches.

I think they're more equipped to cope with it in Wisconsin

I'm actually a little bit jealous.  Build fires, make soup, and play!  Step out your door with a spirit of adventure, because that much snow is sure to create some.

Best wishes from a slightly rainy, grey day in CA.

I'm a bit jealous too! I don't miss losing power/water and being cold for 9 months of the year, but I kinda liked getting snowed in. It was a very good excuse for staying layered in pajamas in front of the fireplace while watching the snow pile up outside.

I hope that those of you getting hit by this stay safe & warm.

Thinking of you in Texas,
camille

It is sunny and warming up here in Austin.  We are seriously cleaning the apartment for a birthday party this afternoon.

Actually, making soup is exactly what I did. Yesterday I made a hearty lentil and barley soup. I also had some fresh shrimp and a tuna steak which I cooked up into a little someone to put over pasta or rice. This morning I made an apple oat crumbly sort of thing. I've been quite busy in the kitchen.

Regarding your slightly rainy, grey day: I wouldn't mind that really. Seems too often we want what we don't have. Maybe the universal rule is to make the best of whatever we have no control over.

I live in New England, about two hours from the Canadian border. What we do to prep ( if you haven't already of course ) is candles with matches/lighters near by in every room and one, somewhere in the hallways, ready to be lit.

Maybe investing in one of those little buffet-food-containers that have the fire-in-a-can under them would be a good idea so you can have heated food if power goes out? ( I have a tiny little grill that is good for both indoors and outdoors if that might give you some ideas )

Stay warm and dry best you can. I hope your power doesn't go out. I am from the East coast and i remember a time when we had no power and the house was freezing cold.
We went to a restaurant because not only did they have power we got hot food! When you are that cold hot food is exciting...LOL

Read that D.C./Baltimore area is expected to get 28.5 inches of the white stuff. Weathermen could be wrong and I sincerely hope so cos i remember seriously digging out of some high snow!

One person from some Scandanavia country said that they were disappointed in how we handle the snow here. I guess where they are from people handle it better. They couldn't believe things were shutting down!

I am in California and it is raining here. Nothing to worry about but getting on the roads because they don't even know how to drive on dry pavement much less rain.

take care

We are more used to it here in the Midwest. I live in a Milwaukee suburb. If we get a foot of snow it is completely cleaned up within a day. In Milwaukee itself they put plows on all of the garbage trucks to help out the snowplows.

Thank you,  It is my fav Doors song, I find it beautiful and haunting.  It is on my iPod and I play it.  A lot.

My son is shoveling the driveway, I have not yet ventured out today.  Driving home at 10pm last night was bad enough!

Here's the basic recipe. I doctor mine up a bit. I added a couple potatos to what I made yesterday. Also used roma tomatos.

VEGETARIAN LENTIL SOUP

1 lb. lentils (rinsed, picked over)
2 1/2 qts. water
1 c. medium barley
1 lg. onion, chopped
2 lg. ribs, celery with leaves chopped coarse
1 lg. carrot, diced
2 tbsp. parsley
1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
2 tsp. salt and pepper to taste

Place all ingredients in pot. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 1 hour or until lentils and barley are tender. Stirring occasionally. Add more water if too thick. Makes about 4 quarts. May be frozen.
