I love the symbolic act of gift giving..to choose something special for someone... as indicitive of our relationship..hopes.. a memory..a symbol.

I like to buy gifts and make gifts...or give a gift of self..and act or action.
I love to recieve gifts as well.... a LOT...
IT is one of my ways of communicating..( from the the LANGUAGES OF LOVE)

One of the best gifts I ever got is a HAPPY FACE mug I keep my pencils in.
As a teacher I used the HAPPY FACE a lot...husband 2 found this mug for 10 cents a a yard sale... and here it is 20 years later on my desk.

Same husband..D...blindfolded me one day and took me out to the garden where he and husband B had decorated it like SANTA FE becuz I missed it..
They had clear lights in the trees....and candles in paper bags.

Another fav gift from a beloved was a wildflower bouquet picked all the way down a mountain as we walked.

**Do you like gifts from a beloved...?
a suitor?a potential "partner" your D....? Your s?

**What is a fav gift you gave? received?

**What was the thought behind it..??

The favourite gifts I have ever given were things I have made specifically for someone. I cannot pick a favourite received. So many that were given from the heart, things I cherish but moreso the people that gave them.

A favorite gift I gave this year is I gave my grandma a Lhasa apso at Christmas time. Her youngest son died two days before Christmas last year, and her oldest son (my dad) died the next month. Then the dog that my dad and I had given her died in the spring.

She was not looking forward to Christmas, and especially a long winter alone.

The dog had been neglected (imo) in its previous home. Her ears were 9 inches of matts, and it took me two baths just to get her even close to clean. She is such a sweet (and bossy!) little thing, but is VERY happy in her new home, and grandma is happy to have someone to talk to.

I like to make things for people if I can. I make tutus and hairclips/bows, and I bake a lot, too. I think the best present I ever gave someone was a corset-shaped cake for my friend's birthday. She was so moved she nearly burst into tears. That was the best response I could have hoped for. :D

I recently had to quit drinking coffee and one of the best gifts I received, from one of my best friends, was a tea mug with an assortment of teas.  I prefer something small and sentimental over an expensive, huge gesture.  Show me that you are paying attention to who I am.

I agree Katy. One of my favourite gifts was in fact, a rock. Not a purchased rock, but a rock someone climbed a mountain to get, just for me. Because she knows I love picking up rocks and have them all over my house, inside and out.

I'm the same way.  I have people bring me rocks from all over if they ask what I want.  I met up with a Dom from here, just as friends, after he had been away on a trip.  I had asked him to get me a small rock from each place he went to ( England and Iceland) and give them to me when we met.  I still have them, along with many others and each one has a story.

Another gift that is beyond perfect - a friend of mine bought a beautiful antique ring at auction, I long admired it.  One random day she took it off her finger and gave it to me, just like that.  Unexpected and wonderful,

I love to give people in my life gifts. I make them, I buy them, and any signif. other gets spoiled rotten.  I put a lot of thought and energy into deciding on the right thing for people, and usually it shows.  For myself, well yes, I do like getting things, either sentimental or shiny or both is my preference.

I came upon one of my most cherished gifts by accident, when viewing my grown sons MySpace page.  In the place he listed as his hero,  "my mom" with a brief explanation why.  I can't set the gift on my desk, but I take it with me, always.

Giving gifts and receiving gifts are perfectly valid ways to show and receive affection. It only works though it both people understand that is what is going on and if both people are open to several ways of showing and receiving affection. Otherwise it feels like an obligation or duty and gifts may be judged by monetary value rather than thought and affection.

My Master and I went through a hard time this year together. He gave me some beautiful roses at the end of the ordeal. I made rosary beads for him out of those roses. We make each other a lot of gifts, but those were the most special to both him and me, for the meaning of the roses and how important his faith is to him.

I admit it I love gifts. I have recently been given two very gorgeous ones, and yes, they are of the material kind, but I guess I will stop protesting that he can afford them and just accept them.

This post reminds me of the gift I made the year after my Mother passed away. We play "dirty Santa (drawing numbers and stealing gifts) and my gift was a photo album of Mom. The pictures were of her throught her adult life. It was one of the last gifts unwrapped or I think it would have gotten stolen more than the one time.
