I have been thinking that since her receiver is old to seeing if we can upgrade to a DVR and getting this new package for newcomers but do it as a loyality deal. I want to watch Big Love since I missed the last 2 seasons.

I know, right?  I have to laugh at the cable ads that say a little rain will kill your satellite signal.  I think we lost ours twice.  Once was in the middle of a blizzard, and the problem was that there was literally 1" thick coating of ice covering the entire thing.  Chipped that off and it was fine.  The second was during a huge thunderstorm.  The storm itself wasn't the problem.  The problem was the gigantic tree branch that broke off and landed on the thing.  Go figure.

I always knew when a simple rainstorm was coming. The satellite would go out almost every time. And then would start to come back in as the storm passed over. It was always the norm to lose it then to not.

We have that problem here. If its stormy, we lose connection. Just a fact of life out here in the country.

I accept it in the pathway to tv enlightenment. But when it does it while watching ABC family (especially HP movies) it chaps my hide!!!

The "acquiring signal" error just means that the receiver isn't speaking with the dish (more accurately, to the LNB - the box positioned over the dish).  It could be the LNB, it could be that the dish is out of alignment, it could be the switch, but chances are that it's the receiver.

As Aileen said, just reboot the receiver and see if that works.  If not, call Dish customer service.  It's free and the CS is very good as customer service goes.  Many of the CSRs are within the United States and they're well trained.

Definitely get a DVR system.  They cost an extra $5 a month, but it's well worth it.  The recording capabilities beat the snot out of any VCR on the market.
