Okay, we turn on the TV and our satellite says it is aquiring signal. It has been this way since 4pm CST. Yep, we missed out on the news and we are all alone out here in the boondocks.

I don't think its possible but can someone with satellite experience tell me what to do? Do our smart card froze solid? I don't think Dish network has handle this problem before...

and yes, it is 21F right now in NE TX. Even the dog does not want to go outside to do its business.

Unplug the unit from the wall for about five minutes. Sometimes that reboots the system.

if it is got snow or ice cover thats one. (or snow and blowing snow in air)

First, unplug the entire fuckin works from the wall. wait 1 minute or more....heavy more......

reboot from ground up.

then what you got?

If a gust of wind moved it, it might need to be reoriented. Mine did it before, at least once a day, it was the reciever.

Do you have snow? Sometimes snow can blow into the dish and interfere with reception.

I wouldn't unplug the unit. I'd pull the smart card, wait a minute, then reinsert it. If you're still getting the same message, it's probably not software. At that point, most likely the dish is out of alignment or there is something blocking the signal.

You didn't mention what the weather was like, OP, other than the cold temp, but if there's heavy cloud cover, it can do that. Can you call customer support?

By the way - what, exactly, does the error message say? Is it acquiring any satellites? I mean does it say, "Now acquiring signal, 1 satellite located, etc."? Or just "Acquiring signal, 0 satellites located"?

It just says acquiring signal and once in a while a error message will pop up.

Some wind today, just a arctic coldfront freezing us down here in TX, no snow luckily. I am blaming Jeff for the coldfront.

Do you recall what the error message says? Were you able to pull the smart card and reinsert it? That typically resets the software.

But it doesn't say anything about having actually acquired any satellites?

It could also be something as simple as the cold causing a cable to come loose. It's not unheard of for a cable connection to come loose when the metal contracts. Not exactly common, but not unheard of.

I'm just trying to find out right now if the dish is actually communicating with the receiver; that's why I asked if it said that it was actually acquiring any satellites. If it even says so much as "acquiring satellites, 1 satellite located" or whatever it says, that would tell you that your cable connections are all properly hooked up, or else that information wouldn't get through to your receiver. Then it would probably be a dish out of alignment. If it's not acquiring any satellites, that would make it a little more complicated, because it could be a dish out of alignment, a cable that's loose, or possibly a software issue. I'm just trying to make it as simple as possible.

Mine had a problem when it snowed and it got covered in it sometimes. I put a 100 W resistor on it and i switch that one on for like an hour. it clears that problem. Ok in the blizzard itself i some times have receiver problems but that stops when the weather gets better. Seems like it doesn't like storms.

I know, right? I have to laugh at the cable ads that say a little rain will kill your satellite signal. I think we lost ours twice. Once was in the middle of a blizzard, and the problem was that there was literally 1" thick coating of ice covering the entire thing. Chipped that off and it was fine. The second was during a huge thunderstorm. The storm itself wasn't the problem. The problem was the gigantic tree branch that broke off and landed on the thing. Go figure.

For troubles though, especially with dish network, call their support if you can, 24/7. They are awesome, fast, friendly and actually helpful. During a nice day though, if you can, make sure you have a good, strong signal, then climb up and make sure all the bolts are super tight.

Our satellite signal would go out every time it rained, even a little. We are now on AT&T's new U-Verse system. Phones, TV and internet all on fiber optic cable. It rocks.

Yep, do a 'hard' reset. If that does not correct the matter, make them earn the fees you are paying and have them come take a physical look.
