On average, a person will "shed" about 100 strands a day. A lot of your question is dependent on other things. Do you brush your hair often in between washing? If you don't, it will seem as though much more hair is coming out, but really it is just the accumlation over time that perhaps just didn't fall. I have thick (sorry) wavy hair and after I wash it, it will appear as though handfuls are coming out, but really there are strands that were just tangled in with the rest that didn't come out before because I hadn't tried to run a brush through it. There is no need to wash your hair everyday depending on the weather (as in if you perspire a lot), your hair is oily and looks straggly after a day, etc. It is actually healthier for most people to only wash their hair once or twice a week. That being said there are medical conditions that will cause some hair loss. Stress and thyroid problems are just two of them. Have you asked your doctor about this to see what he/she has to say? On a side note, if you have thinner hair, it will appear thicker with a layered, shorter cut. There is a lot of truth to the concept of a really good cut making all the difference (this coming from a woman who gets a trim once a year).
