itsmeinLV -> general question about thin hair (12/31/2009 7:27:51 PM)

I've always had thin hair all my life and always had it long pass my shoulders.  Lately, I've noticed that I've been shedding quite a bit, especially after I wash my hair.  A bit means after I comb my hair, I would brush my hand through it and get approximately 30-40 or so strands of hair each time I wash my hair, not including the normal everyday shedding a few 5 or so strands here and there.  I wash my hair every other day because it gets oily but my scalp is not dry (nor is it overtly oily).  I take the pill, multi-vitamin for women, and a supplement for hair growth (mainly biotin).  My question is: is this normal?  How much do you guys shed?  Any pointers?  Thanks!

I was holding off to see if the wimmens wanted to tackle this.

A very common cause is increased stress, itsme.  If you feel an impending crisis or something like that, it probably has an effect.  I hope that's got nothing to do with the reason, but it's what most spoke to me when I read your post.

On average, a person will "shed" about 100 strands a day. A lot of your question is dependent on other things. Do you brush your hair often in between washing? If you don't, it will seem as though much more hair is coming out, but really it is just the accumlation over time that perhaps just didn't fall. I have thick (sorry) wavy hair and after I wash it, it will appear as though handfuls are coming out, but really there are strands that were just tangled in with the rest that didn't come out before because I hadn't tried to run a brush through it.

There is no need to wash your hair everyday depending on the weather (as in if you perspire a lot), your hair is oily and looks straggly after a day, etc. It is actually healthier for most people to only wash their hair once or twice a week.

That being said there are medical conditions that will cause some hair loss. Stress and thyroid problems are just two of them. Have you asked your doctor about this to see what he/she has to say?

On a side note, if you have thinner hair, it will appear thicker with a layered, shorter cut. There is a lot of truth to the concept of a really good cut making all the difference (this coming from a woman who gets a trim once a year).

While it may sound a little silly, you really might want to consult a doctor. Hair loss can be caused by a number of things, some of which could be quite serious - hormone imbalances, disorders of the pituitary or thyroid glands, anemia, even heart disease. Definitely worth checking out, IMO. Good luck, whatever it is!

Thank you, everybody, for the helpful posts!  No, I haven't discuss this with my doctor because I was a bit embarassed and I'm afraid he won't take me seriously...but since it might be directly linked to my health, I don't think I'll feel as embarassed to approach this problem with him anymore.  Thanks again!

You don't live right next door to a nuclear power plant, do you? Because that could be the simplest explanation.

Lol!  No, I do not.  Yes, that would be the simplest and most awful explanation.

consider a creme rinse.   This time of year is HARD on hair.

Mostly tho thin hair is genetic.   It might help to eat eggs.  Well- I gave them to my dog for good nice fur.

Hair grows faster in summer.

You should take vit E as well.   While it is not a sure thing- being deficient in vits can speed up hair loss.

Google "Mega-Tek", which is a conditioner made for horses (totally safe for human use). It's the same stuff as "Ovation Cell Therapy", but at half the price. It will stop breaking, splitting, and thinning, and also encourages new growth.

I refraim from putting crap on my hair.  I used that color back- and the pillows got greasy.

I mean the gel and color back.   But then my days of being beautiful are way over.

Some guys with thin hair go the shaved head look.

Winter my hair is long- summer I wear a crew cut.  Thats how I been for 20 years now.

What are you talking about? I've seen your pictures. You're a damned good looking guy! I don't know how old you are, but you've kept your looks a hell of a lot better than I have. You've got nothing to worry about on that score.

A dermatologist is best for the hair.

That is very kind of you.

I had an ad on craigslist and it did not go well.

I really miss my best friend, Jim- who passed.  We never dated but he understood me in many ways.  I do what I can to stay friends with Jenn.

I am 46.  The pic is maybe 3 years old.

Oh well- with out good friends in life nothing else matters.   I pulled my ad because I dont want to be day old merchandise.  Then if I pass on my looks- my very complicated mind scares people away- speaking dating or even just friends.

At one time I photographed very well.

I had an accident a few years ago.  I am not crippled- but it did take a toll.  The court bull shit and the injuries.

Anyhow- thanks for the nice compliment!!   :-)
