For all those who thought I was a complete nut, let me go on and remove all doubt.

I sit here in my room and I spy a spider on the wall. Most people would automatically go OMG and quickly kill him (or her). But I don't. In fact I tell people not to kill spiders, or lightning bugs either.

First of all us northerners don't have much to worry about when it comes to poisonous spiders. Most of them here probably got here in people's luggage and shit like that.

Humans are not a spider's favorite meal. I am not sure if they can actually suck blood out of you but if they can they are so small it doesn't really matter.

As such they rarely if ever spread disease like mosquitos and such.

What's more spiders eat insects. I almost said "other insects" but that is not true. They are actually not an insect. They are arachnoids, a different species. In eating insects they eat those wonderful mosquitos and ticks, fleas and all that.

As such they contribute to our efforts to prevent the spread of disease.

Tell me how clean your house is, if you see a spider you have some insects somewhere. I have adopted a different philosophy than most. I avoid trashing their webs, at least until they become cowbwebs. I live like a slob and have a couple of friends who bring their dogs over. And then I have rent-a-kitty. He lives two houses down and his owners decided to get a couple of dogs so he is pretty much an outdoor cat now. Any of these animals could bring in fleas, and I have been in infested houses with my lower legs exhibiting an unexpected itch. In which case when I got home I actually brought some in.

However, with my good healthy herd of spiders I have never had to have the place exterminated or anything. And I live like a slob but for one exception. I am very careful about leaving food out. This is mainly because of mice that will find their way in. But you can't keep such an eye on bugs. They can come in in a cigarette pack or a beer case. You can't stop it, but you can let something eat them :-)

This from a guy with such love for insects that years ago bought a bug zapper rated one square mile. I mean this was the Tim Taylor of bug zappers, I even cut out every other of the plastic ribs to allow for those big bugs to get their fair share of the juice, which can be quite entertaining. However it did backfire on me.

Such a powerful light lights YOU up, and thus the bugs are also attracted to you ! So now if we go in the back, we would have to put the zapper in the front, and vice versa.

I tell people never to kill a lightning bug because they eat mosquitos, and they were my nemesis at one time. I really didn't mean to kill all those birds with my nuclear powered zapper.

Shit happens I guess.

Hiya, Term.

I have always been fascinated by spiders.  I never kill them but scoop them up and take them outside.

It's spelled "arachnid", BTW.

Amazing creatures - well worth the time to learn about and quell at least some of the fear - though I admit I will never get over tegenaria and its ilk!

A spider gave me the nickname of "Cyclops" once by biting me between the eyes and just a little higher than my eyes. It probably got me in my sleep...

The festering sore that resulted was hideous beyond words, I pulled out a chunk of... whatever it was, that was about the size of an eyeball. Think the mother of all zits.

I healed completely, its been a while. I don't hate spiders now, I'll let them go outside if I catch one in the house, but I won't tolerate them anywhere near where I sleep and I bug bomb the house twice a year.

Spiders are amazing creatures, humans could learn alot from them. I never kill them and unless they are making their home some place intrusive I tend to leave them be.

I'm absolutely terrified of spiders, but I still don't kill them. I get a glass, trap them, slip some paper underneath and transport them outside. *shrugs* I think they have as much right to live as any other critter- I just don't want them anywhere near me!

LOL.  Brian tells me that all the time.

I live on the river.   Which means I have alot of spiders and assorted creatures.  I kill spiders if I see them.  For everyone I kill there are dozens I do not get to.   Why do I kill them?  Easy.  I have been bit many times when sleeping.   Yes I live and it is moreless harmless.  But it is annoying anyway.

I had dusted cob webs and then my sister visited.  Well she seen a bunch MORE.  As I tried to get rid of them before she seen them. I was embarrassed because it seemed like I never clean the place.  Even when I told her there is alot here due to the river... she thought I am lazy.

But this goes to a question of lived in look.  How lived in should a place be?
For myself I like somewhat cleaned up with out being too museum like.

In my mind the spiders which must die are the fast ones. If they're slow enough to catch and then release outside they may live but if they're just a blur running across the carpet I feel totally justified in destroying them.

The ones I feel crawling over my skin as I lie half awake in my bed deserve no mercy either.

If you wish to live and thrive
Let the spider run alive

My grandmother used to say this when we were little. The one and only time I killed one, it was pregnant and we went from one spider to a ton of them. *cringe* never again.

~Fast Reply~

Spiders are awesome.

That said. I'm fucking terrified of them and can't stand them. I try not to kill them but to get other people to relocate them outside. Very odd for a girl with a Spider-Man tattoo huh?

OP:
I love spiders and let them run about my house as well...
I also taught the kids at school  not to kill them..

ON the aboriginal Medicine Wheel the SPIDER is about creativity..
When you see a spider it is asking you..
What dream do you need to bring to fruition..?
WHat   creative gifts do you have and need ot use?
Spider also warns us of getting too close into a tangled web we weave.

Spiders show up when creativity is happening....watch

Spiders are benevolent, fascinating creatures.  That said, there are certain species here which, although not poisonous, can leave a nasty bite.  So I try to relocate spiders from inside to outside, but that's not always possible.  I always feel apologetic if I kill one.

I used to have a phobia, performed a significant amount of, study, and exposure therapy on myself. Now I can be near one without freaking the hell out. In my house? I kill them personally, as I'd kill any unwelcome interloper infringing on my territory. Nature is nature.

Spiders are extremely interesting animals, as shown in this short educational film....

Oh, and as a personal note, I think jumping spiders are the most adorable animals on the face of the earth

I used to hate the things as a kid, and was not too fond of them as an adult, but now, I am quite happy to share my room with one of the big house spiders we have here, and yeah they do bite if you piss them off. Spiders, I am totally unscared of now, why, I don't know, one day I just found I quite liked the creepy things and that was that.

Anyways, you just have to watch this short film about spiders ;

Bugger.

Anyways I got the link from a friend, who is a lab tech at a local college, apparently it was shown to the students before checking it out, they though it was, well educational, but it turned out to be but not in the way they thought, the students were creased with laughing.

I have had an affinity toward spiders since I was very small.  One time, at about age 5, I woke up & only one of my eyes opened.  I went running to my mother, since at that age I had no clue what would cause such a thing, & she told me it was nothing to worry about, that it was swollen shut probably due to a spider bite.  I then began to cry.  She asked me why that would make me cry & I said, "Because my spiders would never bite me unless I rolled over on one.  So I must have hurt or killed it."  I remember feeling completely distraught that I may have harmed a spider.  His Evilness has arachnaphobia & when they bought their current house, my job was to clean it up & make it habitable & to rid it of the many spiders who had taken up residence, particularly in the basement.  I actually killed one for him.  I would never ever do that for anyone else.  I have never lost my affection & fascination for them.

I don't mind spiders too much and as long as they stay in obscure, out of the way places I tend to leave them alone. But when they start invading my space...like crawling across the ceiling over my bed so I can't get to sleep...well, that's another story. But I try to avoid squishing them...that just leaves a big spot of spider juiice that has to be either cleaned up or looked at for years. Solution? I have a small one gallon shop vac that is perfect for sucking up the little buggers.
