DaS13 -> D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 5:13:15 AM)

Hello everyone!!!

So, clover and I have started a new hobby... A few days ago, we ran to Barnes and Noble and picked up the D&D starter kit...
Then we realized we needed the player's handbook (we have 4th edition)... And the "for dummies" book... And dungeon tiles...
And miniatures... ^_^' There's nothing like starting a new hobby, on a cold, snowy November night... Tucked away, safe and warm, at home... With my slave girl by my side. <3

We're really excited... 'cept we don't really know anyone else that plays. O.o >.<'

Anyone have any tips for D&D newbies like ourselves?

You don't "need" all the accessories like tiles and miniatures, but they make it more fun. we used to make our own tiles and to start, you can use anything for miniatures...like the pieces in a monopoly game. as you get more into the game, you can add more things. don't try to do it all at once. there is WAY too much. I have been into the game for about 30 years now, but left off at version 3.5. for starter players, one of you needs to become familiar with the dungeon master's guide and whatever adventure you are going to play, so you can keep the flow of the game going. and while you can play with just one other person, you should have 3-4 characters. but in the end, there is no real way to play. that's the beauty of the game. it's all up to you. Good luck with your new hobby.

Wow, I am such the geek after all these years.

Oh, we knew we didn't need the dungeon tiles and miniatures... We just really, really wanted them. XD

We also wanna start making our own tiles... One of our favorite web comic creator's, Gabe, from Penny Arcade
has AMAZING ideas...

Banzai is absolutely right.  You don't need tiles and extras.  But.. you did buy dice, right?  You have to have dice.  Lots and lots of dice in different colours, and especially pointy d10s that you can spin if you blow on them.

Okay, I'm a bit of a dice junkie.  I still have dice I bought when I was a teenager.

As far as equipment, the best thing I can suggest is to get a big laminated wet or dry erase grid.  It makes it much easier to show maps, and to show where people are in combat.  You can wipe it off, roll it up, and use it again
next session.

The most important thing I can tell you is that it's all about your imagination.  The rules are really guidelines.  You can change them whenever you want.  I'm hesitant to get into 4.0, because it seems too rules-oriented.  But take it from someone who still has her 16/17 elven magic-user/thief floating around, the rules are not ironclad.

A group is always best, but unless you're an experienced DM, keep it small, three or four people other than you.  The more people, the more confusion.

If you find you really like it, the closest computer equivalent is online text-based MUDs.  There are a few really fun ones that emphasize roleplay, but you can still go hack and slash if you want.

I think it's very nifty that you've discovered D&D.  I've been playing most of my life, and it's great to see someone else discover it.

Um.. you did get dice, right?  And a Crown Royal bag in which to keep them??

DaS13 -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 5:36:28 AM)

Hehe, yes, we DEFINITELY bought some dice. XD

Right now we're keeping all our little stuff, like dice, smaller tiles and minis, in a cute little purse neither of us were using. ^_^

Have you seen The Order Of The Stick, DaS? That's another good D&D webcomic.
I'd have a look on the internet if you're keen to find more players: there's a lot of D&D boards, some of which may well have a few members in your neck of the woods. Also, if there's a university nearby, there could well be a role playing group there.

Banzai550 -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 5:41:13 AM)

if utah wasn't so far off, I would offer to sell off my sizeable collection of modules, rules books and other source material. check the game shops you may have locally for used stuff. mostly as good as original, maybe marked up a bit, but definately cheaper in the long run, and it's a very long run once you go down the rabbit hole.

Llyren -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 5:47:29 AM)

I love OotS!  Belkar truly is a sexy, shoeless God of War!  You also might want to check out Dorktower.  See if there is a gaming store in the area. Often they're independently owned and operated, and you can learn about other local gamers.  As Banzai mentioned, they do sell used books sometimes, or have a board where people can post to sell their things.  My collection of books and modules would fill a good sized box, and that's not counting the White Wolf stuff.

Also, if you have enough dice, you don't need tiles.  Your spare dice can stand in for monsters and shrubbery.

Awesome!

And I'm definitely looking up those web comics... I love good comics. ^_^

Llyren -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 5:54:15 AM)

I'm a complete geek, and I must admit that I'm sitting here squee'ing because there are more girl gamers in the world!

If you like cats, I'd suggest two lumps.  OotS is my favourite, but two lumps runs a close second.

DaS13 -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 5:58:04 AM)

Yes, <3 cats. Have a little kitten named Wedge. ^_^

Named after a famous Star Wars character. ;)

Moonhead -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 6:07:49 AM)

Lyren is dead right about seeing if there's a local gaming shop that might have a contacts list or a bulletin board. You can tell it's been a long while since I did any of this, can't you?

It's like setting fire to a troll.  Some things you never forget.

Personally I always liked 2nd edition the best. Might be hard to find some of the stuff. But you can find people with scans pretty easily.

I tend to use them only as an influence or read them for fun when I like the setting though. My favorite type of play involves finding out what people did the night before, and exaggerating a common setting, and making them play themselves, choosing some items they have on them to carry over. Then you spin the story from there, if you're with a particularly good group, you swap off GM'ing, which is super fun.

Moonhead -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 4:22:46 PM)

The thing that always strikes me as a terrible shame was the Spelljammer stuff vanishing with the second edition.

Banzai550 -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 5:34:17 PM)

Wizards of the Coast used to have a ton of stuff from 2nd and 3rd edition in PDF for free dl. I don't remember seeing it last time I was there, but I do hace the files if anyone wants them. they can be big, but they are free after all.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 6:47:26 PM)

I haven't played D&D in years, but it was always a hoot and a good way to kill several hours. I actually met E.G. Gygax (the creator) at a convention (GENCON).

Ok, so along the way you will want to get a monster manual. Don't forget a complete set of dice. Get real dice, not those electronic ones (they suck the fun out of rolling your own dice). A complete set consists of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20, 30 and 100 sided dice.

Open your imagination and create your own scenarios and adventures. Whoever is the DM should control the pace of the game and always remember to keep it appropriate to the skill level of the players involved. This is far better than any video game. While (some) video games are similar in concept and play, thid (D&D) is far better in that you use your brain!

The pewter miniatures are also fun to paint.

VioletGray -> RE: D&D newbie... (11/18/2009 9:12:34 PM)

Hi, I'm sorry that you got into D&D at this period.  4th Edition is a good game, but it is more unlike D&D than any edition before it.  It's essentially a turn-based strategy game, and you really DO need miniatures.  2nd Edition was good, but 3rd is WAY better. Order of the Stick follows 3rd edition rules.  After you run a good 4th edition campaign, I would suggest that you branch out a bit, maybe run Deadlands or the Whitewolf system just to get a good tabletop experience.
