Just wanted to say happy Guy Fawkes Day (or whatever it is you say on this day - merry Guy Fawkes Day?) to all our British friends out there.

Guy, guy, guy
Poke him in the eye,
Put him on the bonfire,
And there let him die!

OK, as an ignorant Yank- everything I know about Guy Fawkes comes from a book on the brief history of England; and the terrific movie V for Vendetta.
If Fawkes was a fanatical Catholic who wanted to blow up James I and Parliament, why does England still celebrate him? Or is it his execution they celebrate?

I am just hoping in 400 years time there won't be a Osama Bin Ladin Day. Or a Glenn Beck Day.

Help me out here, friends across the pond.

Well. . . until the 1850's it was mandated to be celebrated.  What they are celebrating is the fact that he was caught and did NOT blow up parliment.

(We) celebrate his downfall with mock execution by throwing an effigy of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire.

This is where it started but these days in the middle east they do the same with flags and pictures of western leaders.

Personally this is the time of year I try not to get killed or disfigured by youths misusing fireworks for crude entertainment. I have bad childhood memories of people aiming fireworks at one another, can’t stand those ones that make the screeching noise? What is their purpose other than to make hideous noise?

No Offence, But I Hate that film.
The Book is a comparison between Anarchy and Fascism. They are the two choices.

They turned it into a leftist piece of preachy crap with eggy-in-a-basket or whatever they think that English people eat. Don't get me wrong, I like liberal thought, but they COMPLETELY missed the point.

Edit: Which is my opinion, of course.

Thank you Sir:)
I miss that quaint little morbid tradition of ours. Nothing like roasting sausages in a bonfire burning an effigy at the stake *giggles*. Remember, remember the 5th of November.... frosty evenings, fireworks and smoke ;)
Happy Guy Fawkes Day to you too Sir!

Well wishes,
anna

The problem with that rhyme as a way of making people remember is that it works for any day in November. I used to think it was 'remember remember the 7th of November'.

In fact thinking about it we could also say: “Remember remember the 5th of September” and it would still work.

He isn't celebrated.  What is celebrated is his capture.  Initally it was people celebrating that the King had been saved which evolved into sticking effigies of Fawkes or the Pope onto bonfires.  Fawkes was only a fall guy (pardon the pun) though - in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Robert Catesby was the leader who had previous tried to dethrone Queen Elizabeth.

Oh no! V for Vendetta is a cool film - one of my favorites. I have a copy in my DVD collection. As for eggies in a basket, my mom would make them for my sisters and me when we were growing up. Loved them. Must be the English in us (we also have Yorkshire pudding every Christmas).

Guy Fawkes' night is also an opportunity for bigots of all ilks to burn anti-Catholic effigies - it's an anti-Catholic festival first and foremost. The violence expressed at some of those bonfires can be baffling.

True , no doubt. Bigotry can be found throughout the world in all stratas of society. I wonder, If Guy Fawkes had succeded, would Guy Fawkes day be a celebration for (rather than against) him? Considering human nature, I'm inclined to think yes.

Oh well... Cest le vie (or however the hell you spell that).

Glad to see your back. I noticed you hadn't been posting for a little while - it's just not the same around here without our kittinsol.

It's funny actually because I was watching Eastenders the other day and there was this penny for the guy scene, I thought that's kind of odd since I've not seen such scroungers for many a year. Here I've stolen a scarecrow and put it in a shopping trolley now give me… ahem I mean him some money. It should also be pound for the guy (inflation).

I have to confess I've not been to a bonfire for years so don't really know what violence kittinSol is referring to. Mostly it is people standing around as if they've never seen a fire before and burning their hands with sparklers. I think the anti catholic message isn't so resonant in modern bonfire sentiment.

Also if not for bonfire night please tell me what other time of year I can get rid of all the dead batteries and empty spray cans I have?
