Get some rock salt, put in your palm they will come up to you and eat it out of your hand, heck you can touch most of them. Atleast thats how they are at 1000 islands in upstate NY

They are not nearly as friendly here in Iowa. Pretty much take off running from the yard when they see me come outside, and stop when they get to the pasture.

Unless it is a buck during rut, then I prefer to keep my distance. They like to push their boundaries.

On Fire Island they won't get out of your path. If the kids are walking and eating a snack, the deer have mobbed them. My son threw his candy bar into the bushes so they would chase it and let him pass. He was very weirded out by it.

But we don't pet them. They carry Lyme ticks and their fur has poison ivy on it. It gets on their fur, not their skin but transfers to our skin.

Deer are incredibly smart...

I once had a personal one on one, mano a bucko, all out grudge match going for several years with an amazing buck we called "The Shredder"... He knew who I was, and I knew who he was.  He knew my patterns, and I knew his...

The first year I saw him, he came marching across a marsh broadside to me in full rut like he owned the place... He was a majestic 8 point then... I could have dropped him at any point, he was in my cross hairs the whole time, but his rack was narrow and his tines very high... I wasn't positive he was a shooter, so I let him walk...

Looking back, I should have dropped him then...lol

The next year he was the dominate buck.  He had a scrape the size of a school bus going under a huge oak that almost every single deer in the neighborhood visited... but alas, he had gone nocturnal...

At the end of that year, he waited until just AFTER the season was over to tell me in no uncertain terms, in deer language, to "fuck off, you're in MY house" by tearing up trees for a solid quarter mile... That is how he became known as "The Shredder".

None of us every got another look at that buck, but people have been killing "The Spawn of the Shredder" ever since...
