Hi everyone,
I am trying to figure out the name of a movie that a friend of mine watched on TV in the seventies. It was about this group of guys who went hunting together and they got into some kind of fight with some other people. Long story short: one of them is killed but they don't tell anyone. They simply come back the next year and engage in a big battle in the woods. When I heard it was battling in the woods, I suggested "Southern Comfort." He said that is not it. Does anyone have a clue because this is one I have never seen? Just thought some of you folks might recognize this plot. Thanks for any pointers!

Hi luci,

Try IMDB.com for starters.  Do you remember the names of any of the actors?

No, Vendaval, that's the problem. I love IMDB and that was my first thought but he can't remember any names. I've even done some broad searches for 1970's TV movies but without knowing any specifics, it's virtually impossible to search. That's why I thought I'd throw it out there for anyone here who may recall that plot. Thanks for the tip, though

Southern Comfort (1981) is an American thriller film

The film, set in 1973, features a Louisiana National Guard squad of nine on weekend maneuvers in rural bayou country as they come under threat from local Cajun settlers.

Members of a patrol of Louisiana Army National Guardsmen are meeting in the Bayou's swamps for weekend maneuvers. Corporal Hardin (Boothe), a cynical transfer from the Texas National Guard, is disgusted with the behavior and arrogance of his new squad. A married man, he wants no part of a date with prostitutes that PFC Spencer (Carradine) has waiting for the men. Nevertheless, he is befriended by the amiable Spencer, the two seeming to agree that they are the only level-headed soldiers in the squad. In the swamp, the patrol gets disoriented and will need to turn back unless they steal several pirogues, or cajun canoes, at a camp site. They end up frightening and angering local Cajun hunters who return in time to see their boats being taken. Pfc. Stuckey (Smith) fires blanks from his M-60 machine gun at the Cajuns as a prank. The frightened Cajuns fire back, killing the squad leader, Staff Sgt. Poole (Coyote).

If he's remembering this accurately, that's not "Southern Comfort." "Southern Comfort" wasn't even made until about 1981, if I recall correctly, so he couldn't have seen it in the 70s. Do you know anything else - even the name of one actor, maybe?

I never saw the movie mentioned but was Burt Reynolds in it and Jerry (last name?).

Was it about a couple of guys or more and a canoe?

are you thinking about Deliverance?  That one is close, but that one didn't have anyone dying and having the survivors going back the following year.

edited because I obviously can't spell....lol

Yeah, I thought of Deliverance, but that doesn't fit either. The time would have been right (it was made in 72, I believe), but the plot is off. One of the characters did die (Drew, the guitar guy), but it all took place in the span of one weekend.

By the way, if anyone wants a DVD of Deliverance, let me know, because I think I have like about 4 copies. I have no idea why.

Ned "Sooooooeeee" Beatty and Jon Voight. I think Ronny Cox played Drew, the guy who got shot, but can't recall for sure. James Dickey, the author, cameo'ed as the sheriff at the end of the film... "ya'll best not come back here no more..."

The only TV movie that I can think of from the 70's is Roots.  But I do not think that is the one.

So you and a friend think you watched a movie in the 70's on TV.....I'll have whatever she is smoking please....

Could it be Deer Hunter, though I do not think this was on TV in the 70's perhaps you where stoned at the movies and since you did not clean up your mess, thought you where at home

Luci, here is a list of ABC Movie of the Weeks:

Maybe that'll jog a memory for someone?

SnappyKappy and ThatDamnedPanda: Nope, definitely not "Southern Comfort." I said that in the OP. And, no Panda, I do not know any other details. That's why I came here seeking help

Winterlight: Nope, not Burt and Jerry Reed and it was not "Deliverance."

housesubforyou: Funny, but I never said I watched it. If I watched it, I would probably remember something more about it than my friend. What are you smoking? It wasn't "Deer Hunter," btw.

Level: Thank you, dear one. This is more like what I'm looking for. As I said, my friend said he thinks it was a made-for-TV movie. If I could get any more details, I would. It's just one of those things he just barely remembers but really liked. Thanks everyone!

luci

No problem, pretty lady. Ugh, I know it's annoying, just having a scrap of a memory, but being unable to pinpoint it. I was doing that yesterday, regarding a song I liked back in the 70s. It was a hard rock tune, with a repeated verse of "riding around in my hot rod", and the singer kinda sounded like Bon Scott from AC/DC.

My Google Fu has failed me on this, so far

It's a bit of a stretch, but what about Pumpkinhead?

Some teens accidentally kill a boy and one of the locals summons Pumpkinhead for revenge.
