You want to know what my pet peeve is?

People who come to message boards and do nothing but complain about others.

The irony is that you are doing exactly the same thing.

It rumples my perfectly calm feathers very SLIGHTLY reading *ect* instead of *etc* and the majority of people DO type ect and not etc........ but to make a thread about it would be, to my mind,  frighteningly petty. I'd seriously need to get a life.

Oh, now that I've mentioned it .........grins

OP, I'm with you on this one.  Any sub using slashy-speak with me gets told to drop it immediately.

And yes, I do think some people on this board have been unnecessarily rude to you.  There's nothing wrong with having a rant and you've posted in the general discussion forum, so I don't quite know why Acer seems to think you have to ask a question.  Don't let the gratuitous nastiness drive you away - it's happened to all of us.

Funny - I just said this on another thread yesterday : it drives me crazy to read it, & if I had to write that way I'd go back to being vanilla.

Ir's easy enough to blow it off & move on, though, for the most part. I file it under " don't sweat the small stuff".......

Ah. Like those people that complain about TV programming they watch without anybody making them? I happen to think it is silly, but there appear to be tribes out there for whom it is functional. My advice: respect others, especially those who don't conform to your standards.

I was unaware that you had to have a certain number of posts before your opinion was valid.  I won't bother the collar me community with my posts any more then.   Sorry I am not more prolific in my writng

i think what pact meant was,,, with an average of 10 posts a year, slash writing shouldnt really be a burden to you. i dont think pact meant your opinion is not valid.

personally, i find the whole slash writing and
X/x to be of little significance.

while i'm no fan of slash styled writing. i recognize everyone has their own flavor and are entitled to express it. for some this is their first introduction to the lifestyle and that manner of speaking is impressed upon them as correct. some utilize it to differentiate themselves from the dominant person.

however, i've had a change of heart on all of this. the reasoning is simple. i shouldn't be intolerant or judgmental. there's also the possibility that they've been instructed to write in that manner and i wouldn't wish to speak against another person's directive. i'd rather focus on what is being said than the manner of delivery. i could miss out on a thing or two that might benefit me or someone else in some capacity.

hahaha  This whole slashy speak thing is funny.  I used to use it because I was TOLD to.  Now I don't cause Sir doesn't care.  It kinda does hurt my eyes, but it's no big deal to me either way.  I just think people make too big a deal out of it.  hahahaha

Hasn't happened to me.  Then again I'm so cute and fluffy that the peoples just wubbs me!  LOL

As far as slashy speak goes, the more I go along in life, the less things like this really matter to me.  I look at it as a person's right to express themselves as they please.  I don't use it, but my partner usually does even when writing to me.  I could care less.  I am more interested in WHAT he has to say and WHO he is than HOW he expresses it.

The one thing that it does tend to say to me is that the disparity of power/contol in the relationship tends to be of extreme importance to many who use this particular convention.  It is not that it is used as a means of control in and of itself or as a way to resign control, but rather it shows a certain respect of each position individually and the relationship as a whole.

I doubt I will ever get into either lowercasing my pronouns and uppercasing his or slashy speak myself.  I just see my value equivalent to his regardless of where the seat of power is or my position in relation to it.  I accept what he is trying to express and he accepts what I am trying to express, so it isn't a factor, nor does it cause friction between us.  Similarly, it is not an issue for me with others on the message boards or who email me either.
