I even get turned on by the smell of a book store or library. Can get lost in either one for hours and not realize how much time has gone by. I adore books.

I swear we were separated at birth. My parents taught me to read when I was 4, and one of my earliest, and sweetest, childhood memories is the smell of the old library in my home town in Wisconsin. Just walking in the door as a child used to actually give me a physical sensation of pleasure when the smell first hit my nostrils. I remember that I made a vow I would buy the library some day and live in it, so I could smell it every day.

Can I make a guilty confession? Yes the Sax Roemer stuff is incredibly racist, but it's like eating M & Ms. You know the stuff is terrible for you yet you still read them. I read them all on Project Gutenberg, and felt guilty about every page.

On the plus side, it's calorie free.

I'm told if you don't want a book messed with, then you shouldn't get a Kindle. Apparently they remove commentary, drawings, intros, etc not caring how this changes the book.

I am another that lives for and through books.  I can remember as a 5 year old having discovered this passion and I would know when all of our neighbours were out watering their gardens and I would read to them from my Dick and Dora books (I love a captive audience)

I had to sell/give away so many of my books when I moved but still have about three bookcases full back at my parents place and only a tiny book case here.  I try not to look in book shops any more as it hurts me to know I have no space for them (says me who went op shopping and bought three books yesterday, including one which is interviews with Australian female authors which looks fascinating)

Are you me? Or at least my long-lost twin sister I never knew I had? The second I saw this topic on the sidebar, I knew I had to join the chorus, had to sing out for my love of books. "Put the book DOWN" was the refrain throughout my childhood, as I tried to read at the breakfast table, in the shower, on the walk to school, in church... basically, anywhere I thought I could get away with it!

A love of books can instantly bond people together. Their eyes start to shine and they begin to talk excitedly, sharing favorites like rooting through family albums, asking if this old friend is yours as well, and recommending that you meet them if you haven't yet. In the same way, I think one of my biggest turn-offs is someone who doesn't read, or worse, someone who views reading with disdain or contempt.

Okay, enough rhapsodizing. But along the lines of what you've said about scent, I'd like to add one of my favorite Buffy quotes: "Books smell -- musty and rich. Knowledge gained from a computer has no texture, no context. It's there and then it's gone. If it's to last, the getting of knowledge should be tangible. It should be smelly"

When I was young my trick was to turn off my bedroom light and pull the blankets over my head and read by torchlight.  Unfortunately I got caught way too many times, damn bedtime curfews.

estah -> RE: Does anyone else get worked up about books? (9/20/2009 2:36:58 AM)

I take books seriously, often reflecting on them even weeks after they have been read. If I find a book containing certain inhalt, I will speak with the person, calming asking if they are familiar with the author, I will (if asked) state what I found to be strong and weak points of the book (without sharkiness or giving the plot away).

And to be honest, I have never found a boring book, there is something to be found in even the worse written books, you just have to look.

Yep, I LOOOVE books.....I'm loyal to a few authors, but will read almost anything except bio's and non-fiction.  I'll read stuff recommended by friends, we all have the same tastes in reading material, and we've all gotten each other hooled on different series of books, Twilight, the Stephanie Plum books, the Sookie Stackhouse novels.  My personal preference is horror and mysteries, Stephen King is the BEST!

We have a store here named Bookman's.  It has used, and some new, books by the thousands.......I finally went to the one close to my house, and OMG!!!!!  I was in there for 3 hours....I found a couple of older books that I had been looking for forever....already read them, but I also re-read my books.....it's like visiting an old friend.  My copy of Stephen King's Dreamcatcher is in two pieces!

I thought about getting a Kindle...for about 90 seconds.....I also love the feel of the book in my hands, the texture of the pages, the artwork on the cover.....they may be the next greatest thing, but it will never replace books in my house.

and i will read all bios and non fiction, but never fiction.

There really is no loyalty with reading autobiographies. How many more will they write? And i tend to find autobios a bit self serving, so i prefer bios.

Loyalty is generally not an issue. I am more interested in the subject then the author. But i will snag every new release from Ann Rule....

soul2share -> RE: Does anyone else get worked up about books? (9/20/2009 4:45:19 AM)

Well, by the term loyalty, I meant it like you said it here...I'll snag anything by them pretty much without even reading the jacket notes.  I know their writing styles from past books, and rarely have I ever been disappointed.

I can't say I WON'T read non-fiction, but it's got to grab me in the first 5-6 paragraphs, or I'm gone.  I love books about ghosties and the supernatural, even better if it is non-fiction!  Nothing better than a good true ghost story!

I don't do (auto) bios...mainly because I don't find that many folks to be interesting enough to want to know anything about them.  The only bio I ever read and enjoyed was one about Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan.  Can't remember the title, but I was in grade school when I read it.

I loved to read as a kid....in fact, I was the only third grader to have library priveleges at the Elementary school library cuz I was reading at a 6th/7th grade level!  My mom and one of my sisters are like me, we DEVOUR books!  And we have tons of them....I thinned out my books while I've been packing, gave them to work, we all shared our books there, too.  And I've got even more to drop off there before I leave town next week.......I'm sure everyone's already pounced on what I left there last week!

you probably know, but second hand stores, yard sales and flea markets are great places to buy books. Also, buying them on e-bay can be good too

LaTigresse -> RE: Does anyone else get worked up about books? (9/20/2009 6:13:57 AM)

using fast reply.....

I am snobby about a lot of things but I refuse to climb on too high a pedestal with books. I feel that, like people, they tend to come into our lives as needed. If it is well written, it is worth reading for someone.

Hmmm.....yes!! I am indeed a book slut. The more, the merrier. [:D]

Phoenixpower -> RE: Does anyone else get worked up about books? (9/20/2009 12:13:39 PM)

Oh gosh, yesI love my books...only the time to read them all is not available...my ex keeps telling me "is no point to buy so many books when you don't read them." Well, I want to read them, but usually my essay is due far before I am through them all. However, I do not necessarily kling onto them, at least not if it is now for the purpose of studying. Last year uni, once I knew I won't need them any further for that year within that placement I started to sell them. But in general I keep my books in good shape and was very wind up when my brother gave me 2 books back (one of them he took away behind my back) and both of them I got back in a horrid state...and then on top of it he blamed me that he would have gotten that in that stage...but did my marvellous parents bother that he buys me them new or at least pays part of it...of course not [8|] (despite the fact that my mother knows very well how well I look after my books and in what great condition I sold more then 200 of them on ebay in 2004...though that selling was necessary as I needed that money and not because I wanted to get rid of those books...[:(])

At our good-bye-journal from my last apprenticeship one classmate described me with "she has more books then our literature teacher." So yes, I tend to have my own little library in place [:D]

sblady -> RE: Does anyone else get worked up about books? (9/20/2009 12:47:32 PM)

My love of books has surpassed the limited space available at home. You'll find books in and on almost every available surface.

When I realized that a number of my co-workers shared the same passion, I started a "library" of sorts in the empty cubicle behind my desk. Anyone is free to grab a book as long as they return it (eventually). I also send out monthly reminders of the public library used book sale.

We have friendly debates and reviews of certain books and sprinkle our strong opinions with plenty of tact.

How many here enjoy C-Span 2, with their Book TV?
