I think it won't be legal once the state legislature is back in session.

In some parts of the world they can have sex and smoke at the age of 16 both of which have far greater health implications than stripping. More than anything else I wonder which committee decides which age limit is appropriate for which activity.

Legal or not...the person who hires my 16 yr old daughter would have my boot up his ass.

"Let's see, I can make $8.50 an hour at Mc Donald's doing drudge work comming home exhausted smelling like french fries and taking home about $240 for the week or,..... I can dance in a strip club, have fun, meet all kinds of people and take home between $1,500 and $2,500 for the week."
Decisions decisions.

I know we have to draw a line somewhere when it comes to the age of consent...but 16 is just too young...hell 18 is too... Yes there are places in this world where young girls already have 5 kids at that age...but thank heavens we are civilized.

Thank the heavens she is 18.  I may have been spared this one.

REcalling my 16 year old behavior, and my friends, we often got naked for free, and I see no reason why a girl shouldn't be paid for it and have bouncers protecting her.

Point well taken although I think her boyfriend would have taken the money. He has his needs including the need not to work.

Before they vote on any laws in this area they need to pass a law that makes it illegal to wear stripes and polka dots at the same time in Rhode Island!

The govt has better things to do than deny this person a livelyhood, it not like she can go work at fast foods, all the 50 year olds have those jobs. we have the rule of the separation of church and state, the govt has no business legislating issues that involves their perceived idea of morality. It is not like the young lady is hooking. If it is legal to get married at 16, I see no reason someone can't take their clothes off at the same age.

Remonds me of several years ago when I was coaching and teaching.  After a game I went to a local strip club to have a beer and thank goodness I was in a corner and not the "snack bar" because one of My students walked out onto the stage.  I slipped out the door before anything could be shown.  Not that she wasnt beautiful.  Just not a good situation and yes she was underage.

Laws regarding what minors can do at what age are not about legislating morality. Laws regarding minors are passed based on the statistical maturity of kids. It isn't legal to get married at 16 in most states. Most 16 year olds think they have all the answers and are in control of everything when they are not. Considering the laws in most state would charge anyone over the age of 22 with lewd and lascivious behavior for sexual contact with a 16 year old. The laws protect against child pornography which includes anyone under the age of 18, so I find it interesting that they were unable to charge the club with promoting child pornography.

Those laws are there to protect minors. Yes, some might seem like they are "pushing" morality, but then again, since apparently you would find nothing wrong with your underage daughter flaunting her naked body in front of drooling 40 year old men, it's a good thing that someone would be teaching morality to your kids and protecting them from doing something they don't have the maturity to understand they would regret later in life.

You mean 100% of kids are not mature hence they are classified as kids and not adults? I don't think you need a bell curve to figure out what the statistical maturity of kids is IMOSVHO.

Musicmystery -> RE: Legal “loophole” in Rhode Island permits 16-year-old strippers (8/2/2009 9:57:43 AM)

I too am surprised existing laws about "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" aren't applicable here.

Morality clouds the issue. If a 16 year-old strips privately for her boyfriend, has she acted immorally? If her 16 year-old boyfriend likes to look at her nude, is he immoral? Among the problems with U.S. society is that we deny the existence of nature.

The issue, then, is protecting young people not yet mature enough (generally) to weigh all the factors and consequences involved. Surely you wouldn't find legal 10 year old strippers acceptable? So the line goes somewhere....13? 16? 18? 21? 24? Certainly you can see the problems with a case by case basis.

Prostitution is a similar problem--morality clouds the issue. Yet crime and exploitation tend to follow prostitution, so without addressing that real problem, morality is the fall guy. That's why generally the U.S. doesn't allow legal prostitution at any age.

But in the conservative moralistic climate that is the U.S., as well as the political culture that seizes on such "causes" to promote personal and party agendas, such matters will always be clouded with clamor.

My opinion? 16 is too young to legally strip. She's still a kid. Frankly, so are 18 year olds, but they have to grow up sometime.
