I tend to disagree with many of the "be careful" responses - especially having the nipples pierced by a professional - wow, somehow, magically, there are fewer ducts and nerve bundles when the pro with her pro needle waddles up to the table? Sheesh... Half the world runs around with piercings in the most unlikely places, and the illustrated instructions and the tools are all available on the internet.

Please, please, please use a proper piercing needle rather than a safety pin or other such pokey object.  Piercing needles are tapered and hollow to actually create a hole rather than a puncture.  You can order these online via a google search and they will arrive sterile.  14 gauge is a nice size for most people, but make sure you match it to the size of your jewelry.  (And don't forget that the needle is actually pulled all the way through, not just poked in and removed.)

After that, lots of betadine and try to leave it alone for the next several weeks while it heals up.  (A good reason to consider NOT doing both at the same time, btw!) It may still get infected despite your best intentions, but that is the same with any piercing, which is why you're going to need the betadine!

I've had mine for 16 years now without problems.  Piercing parlours didn't exist around here in those days, so this is how we did it... with the exception of mailorder rather than google!  :P

well, at least one thing i am sure of is not using safety pins...

thanks all for your advice and concern :):):)

also wondering if anyone here has had their belly button pierced, as well as nipples.  if so, can u compare your experience with pain levels??

have a terrific day, all!

As far as I know, from what my piercer friends say, the nipple are by far the worst piercings, pain wise. but then again that depends on the persons tolerence.

I had both nipples and my septum pierced on the same day. I agree that I really think it's an individual experience. To me, nipples hurt more than belly buttons (from a physiological point of view, this makes sense as nipple tissue is a lot more nerve-dense, and is contractile tissue rather than soft dermal and subcutaneous fat like the tissue around the belly button).

On the other hand, my septum piercing hurt a LOT more than even the cumulative pain of having both nipples done! I've told folks over the past decade that I'd get my nipples pierced 20 times before I'd EVER let anyone pierce my septum again!

I would like to hear from folks here who have had their nipples pierced at home.  Perhaps you did your own, or your Dom(me) did it for you.  Has anyone had them pierced with safety pins, and what kind of result did you achieve?

thanks!

I'm waiting for the 'DIY antibiotic prescriptions?' thread.

not fewer ducts or neerve bundles...but maybe easier to get it right - done by a professional? would You have Your appendix removed by a doctor or a friend who is good with knives?

P.S. i got my nipples pierced by a MAN...no waddling - He was about 6'4"  - and huuuge..but knew what He was doing....being a professional...chuckles

The number of nerve bundles or ducts doesn't change, but a professional, trained in proper technique and nipple anatomy has a better chance of getting the piercing in with fewer complications and even less pain than an amateur with none of that background, and improves the chances of not having a massive infection or unsightly scarring, migration, and loss of nipple sensitivity. It's up to the individual, of course, but they're your nipples.

There is no such thing, other than the catch-alls anybody can find in an online medical library, the same ones doctors use. There are only people with more or less experience, there isn't even diagnostic equipment outside of surgeries that'll let you see where you're going with that "thing" It is medically inadvisable to make a hole in a nipple, period, there is no medical procedure that requires that, so there is no medical expertise nor an established medical procedure. You're going into the nipple, you're going to hit nerves and ducts, pot luck.

IronBear -> RE: DIY nipple piercings? (7/22/2009 6:54:44 PM)

Tell you  what OP, get your tail feathers here and I'll do the job for nothing, all nice and surgically clean like.... An almost white hot 6 inch stainless nail, a hammer and a billet of wood with the nipples resting on top. A fast and unforgettable job... I also have a photo of a pair of large nipples nailed to a piece of pine wood.. Interesting pic that.. [:D]

This has shown up twice in this thread, and it isn't really accurate. A piercing needle is no different from a hypodermic needle, I suspect they originate from the same manufacturers. They don't create a hole any different from the one made if you donate blood; it's a small, clean cut. By all means do use a piercing needle, for sterility, not the design. In the olden days, I pierced myself many times, using a nail which I had sharpened in the same manner as a hypodermic (I learned to work metal from a machinist). No problems I haven't experienced or witnessed from professional piercings or from using proper needles. I have had to give up on one home-grown, and one professional piercing, a nipple, and the web between my thumb and forefinger, respectively. Most of the others, I took out after a week or two, because I really don't like permanent body modifications, but I am drawn to the sensation.

Ah, having seen and held and sterilized professional piercing needles of 8-22 gauge sizes, I can tell you that they -are-, in fact, both tapered and hollow. Larger-gauge needles (12g and larger) do actually remove a 'tunnel' of tissue, similar to a fine needle biopsy procedure. Occasionally, especially where very large-gauge holes are desired, a dermal punch is used to remove a clean section of tissue.

Informationally, a hypodermic needle (usually in 26-18 gauge) is -also- tapered and hollow. Needles (whether piercing or hypodermic) are also made of surgical stainless steel, which has been finely polished so that it is nearly completely smooth, with no flaws in the metal that might hold bacteria, etc. Nails are often made of steel alloy, and may be dipped in a number of substances, including phosphate and zinc, in order to help them last longer and move through wood more easily. None of these substances is healthy when in contact with open wounds.

To each their own, but since there -are- viable options out there, I wouldn't suggest using nails, safety pins, sewing needles, or other tools not meant for the procedure. It may not do any harm at all--but I guess it doesn't seem worth the risk to me, when getting a piercing needle (and a capture cork) is pretty easy.

You might care to check out BME for information, including LOTS of personal experiences of self-piercings gone bad.

I'm terrified of needles, will never get pierced myself, but I do love the look of a scrotum with a small gold hoop in it.

couldbemage -> RE: DIY nipple piercings? (7/27/2009 1:51:28 PM)

What a bunch of safety ninnies.

Sterile is nice... but you are unlikely to die from sticking a safety pin through a nip.

I'd get a sterile needle, but often use merely clean jewelry.

risk aware

I've both had and done many piercings. Including large gauge, like 6.

Needles do not cut round holes.

They cut crescent slits, but typically only the entry wound is a clean cut crescent. It's real obvious looking at the scars on my knees.

....and if you haven't figured it out, I do hook suspensions.

Suspensions?

Can I call the prove it rule?

I want pictures [:D]

Is there a prove it rule?

I tried to add some suspension pics to my profile last fall, but they got rejected. I heard that the rules had now relaxed, so I perhaps I'll try again.

Heck, I'd like to see them just for the fetish value-- I'll be honest, that's one of my 'buttons'... suspension... oh yeah, WAY hot!!
