I am taking my sub and we are headed to Orlando Florida for a week in the fall. He has never been and wants to hit some of the sites down there. I decided to drive because I hate flying.

Sanity,

If I was doing what you are planning there is one place that
would be right at the top of my list.  THE EXPLORATORIUM

It is a science museum that was conceived and designed to be interactive,
a touchy feely, fun exploration and education for children of all ages.  Here is
another link:.  http://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/index.php

You can probably find some stuff about it on Utube as well.
Whatever choices you make, have a ball.

ElectraGlide -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 11:19:40 AM)

We are not heading to the West Coast, I wish we were, it's 3000 miles away. My slave and I did a cycle camping trip in June to the New River Gorge area of West Va.

We went to Camp Crucible over Memorial Day weekend.

We just did a 3 day cycle trip to Ohio on 4th of July weekend.

We are doing a cycle camping trip to the Woodstocks BDSM camping event next week.

In September we have a cycle trip planned to Florida and Thunder in the Smokies bike rally in Maggie Valley N.C.

I used all my vacation time for the trips mentioned, I will try to squeeze more in if I can. On my photobucket link here, I have lots of vacation trip pictures from the past.

peachgirl -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 11:36:30 AM)

I was hoping to do either SF or Yosemite with the UMs...finances may prevent it.  I might just take them part way up the coast, up past Santa Barbara, maybe even get to Hearst Castle.  I remember visiting that as a child, it made quite an impression.  so a shortened trip is better than no trip, I think.

calamitysandra -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 1:52:07 PM)

This summer my oldest UM is going on a 3 week trip to South France with a youth group for the second time. It is hard to believe that he is already old enough. Not much longer and all three of them will be going, and there will be 3 weeks of kids free summer each year. No trip needed for me in thas case. However, I do not envy the chaperoning adults on the 12 hour coach ride with a horde of kids.

Our annual family trip always happens in the fall holidays. A 2 week trip to the Netherlands, fun for the (no longer so) short ones, relaxing for he parents.

And Panda especially, thank you for the great post and all the tips. I've printed your post out, and I'm taking it with me for future reference when I get there. We'll eat at Alioto's, and yeah, in some ways I wish the stay in San Francisco were longer but I really prefer wild places, and I'm the one who is driving.

We'll squeeze all that we can in while there though.

You and me both, man, you and me both. I am not a city guy. Give me trees, lots of them please. In my opinion, cities are a (barely) necessary evil, a way to generate taxes to maintain parks. Which reminds me - if you do go to Mount Tamalpais for any reason, you might want to consider checking out the Muir Woods. Given your circumstances, I don't know if I'd suggest a special trip, because you'll definitely see bigger redwoods (with a lower density of people) further up the coast. But if you are already on the mountain, it's a very  cool place, with an uncommonly relaxing ambience. If you get there any time within an hour of closing, they don't charge admission. One of the last times I was there, I spent an hour and a half stalking a spotted owl, and eventually was fortunate enough to track her to her nest. It was just incredible, absolutely fascinating, watching her feed her young. Beautiful bird.

I'm glad you found this stuff helpful. If there's anything i can do, let me know. One more thing I should add - you're probably going to want to stop and have a look at the bridge on your way north out of town. The best viewing - the site from which all those panoramic pictures are taken - is from the viewing area on the west side of the bridge, about a half mile up the hill from the freeway. The east side viewing area is cool too, but the best view is definitely from the west. Head uphill west from the freeway, and you'll know it when you see it. It's very quick if you're pressed for time - you can do it and be back on the road in less than 15 minutes, easy, and 10 of those minutes are the time you'll spend standing there admiring the view.

I've got a few road trips of my  own coming up, small ones mostly. I'll go camping next week on the North Shore of Lake Superior, do some hiking on the Cascade, Split Rock, and Temperance Rivers. Then I'll come back home for a couple of weeks, and take a longer trip to the Black Hills. It's a day's drive from the Twin Cities. I'll camp and hike in the area around Mount Rushmore, take a day trip to Devil's Tower, spend some time in the Badlands... if I'm feeling really ambitious, i may just take a few days and drive all the way to Yellowstone, as long as I'm halfway there anyway. I haven't been there in so long, last time I was there they hadn't even installed the geysers yet. They'd just been invented, and the park staff was still testing them out for safety purposes.

I had been planning a road trip through the Southwest to LA, but I decided to do that in  the spring instead, when the deserts are blooming instead of baking. Instead, I'll be flying to LA around the 5th of August, and spending about 2, 2 and a half weeks there. Mostly in and around Ventura. I'll swing up to San Luis Obispo to bask once again in the thoroughly delightful company of Vendaval and Subbiegurl, and hopefully visit Lady Pact and her clan in their new digs. I'll drive up to Monterey while I'm there, see the aquarium once again, and hike until I can't walk upright anymore on the Big Sur coast, in Pfeiffer, Molina, and Garrapata State Parks. Then come back and recover so i can either fly or drive out to Folsom in September. After which I'll probably never leave my house again.

LaTigresse -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 3:28:16 PM)

I really wanted to spend a week with my friend Wendy, in New Orleans, this year but one trip a year is about all my budget can handle right now. I've put off the Colorado trip for too many years and I promised my siblings I would do it this year. Cannot break a promise. One really nice thing as far as budget, the trip to Colorado won't cost much more than the gas to get there and back. Free place to stay and all I have to do is cook a few fabulous meals for them and ride a few horses.....terribly difficult stuff yanno.

LadyPact -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 3:32:26 PM)

Well, as Panda mentioned there, I'm absolutely doing a road trip.  It begins in five days and is a one way deal.  We leave GA and head to CA.  The major pit stop along the way is going to be Denver, CO where I'm trying to line up meeting some of the good folks from CM at Thunder in the Mountains.  (For those wondering, I should be in that city July 18.)  From there, we continue on to Paso Robles, which is near the San Luis Obispo area.  I'm already excited about having the chance to meet folks all around.  I'm happy to say that My first chance to say hello should be within the first week we arrive.  (They may not want that disclosed, so I won't say who.)  I'll just say that it's people that I've wanted to meet in the flesh for a very long time.  I think Vendeval will be very interesting to get to know (if she's open to it).

We should have two weeks after arriving there to do some tourist type things before MP has to report for duty, so this thread has been really helpful.  Thank you, Sanity, for starting the thread.  So much good information here.  Panda, you know you're welcome anytime.

Firm and I are on one right now... literally. I have no idea how well this will post from my phone, but my laptop is all the way in the back of our vehicle and I hate to ask Firm to stop for me to get it... we're less than half an hour from a planned stop for dinner at our favorite restaurant in Kentucky.

We left late this morning and are on our way to the Colorado mountains. We'll be camping, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, and other general sight-seeing. Of course, we've a few things planned on the way out and back.

All told, I fully expect to need a vacation by the time we get back. ;)

Nope. Sorry. Didn't  work. Make him pull over and dig around in the trunk!

Or better yet, wait an hour. It'll be dark soon...

Thank you! I'm really looking forward to it. Toward the end of the month, we can firm up the dates a bit. When i swing up north to San Luis and Monterey will probably depend on how long I decide to stay overall, and I haven't decided that yet. Still working the numbers. By the end of the month, when i know all that, you should be settled in and able to think comprehensively about it. This is going to be a blast!

lol... Like I can make Firm do anything.  Though it might have been funny to ask him to get into the trunk... we don't have one!  [;)]

But digging around in the back of the Explorer wouldn't have been any easier... I've got it packed to the gills with camping gear.  I love to camp, but I'm not one to rough it too much.  I've never seen much sense in doing the RV thing... why not just get a motel room?  (Unless you're doing really long term traveling, that is.)  So a tent for us, it is... but a really big one... and an air mattress... any only in camp grounds with water and electricity.  [:D]

We're stopped for the night now in Kentucky.  We hadn't planned to stop until we'd gotten into Missouri, but that's the nice thing about not being on too tight of a schedule... we can do what we like.  We'll most likely try to make up the time tomorrow anyway by leaving early.  We've a dinner date for BBQ in Kansas City and reservations for tomorrow night in Kansas.  I suspect Firm isn't going to let me stay up too much longer.

I'm playing. [:)][8D]

Road trips, hmmm, no car at the moment, in fact not for the last two years, but soon and an Acadiane at that, with a hope to build it for a trip into the Sahara in a few years time. But wait one moment, memories of road trips in the UK, road works, traffic jams, more road works, nightmare. Did do a road trip to Denmark once in a VW combi, the hottest day of the year and only running on three cylinders, no problems, it did it with ease, long live air cooled motors. Nothing doing this year though, not at least until I get Brian around the end of the year when funds should be available, then the fun starts, a machine to take apart.

I read somewhere that the Exploratorium has a great planetarium, which I would like to treat my UM to one of their presentations.

Thanks again Panda, maybe I can get a look of the bridge looking West around sunset, if I try hard enough! Is that a marked exit, does it say "scenic point" or something?

Yeah, it is marked, but I can't remember exactly how it's marked. It's the second exit after you cross the bridge. The first exit is immediately after the bridge, and it takes you to the small viewing area at the northeast corner of the bridge. I believe that one's marked "Vista Point", but I can't recall for certain. Whatever it is, you want to go past that one and take the next one, I'm guessing roughly a quarter mile further up.

As you proceed down the exit, there will be a "Y" in the road. Take the left fork of the "Y", and in a couple of hundred feet it will lead you to "T" intersection and a stop sign. At the stop sign, turn left (hah - I'm getting Sanity to veer sharply to the left![:D]). That road will take you right back under the freeway, and after you've passed under the freeway there will be another "Y" in the road. This time, keep to the right (see, you didn't have to stay on the left very long!). If you take the left fork by accident, it'll shoot you right back onto the bridge going south; follow the right fork, and it will take you up the cliffside. There'll be a couple of pulloffs on the left side of the road within  the first few hundred yards, but the best view is about a half mile up. Maybe a little further, but not much. At any rate, you'll know it when you see it. Even if you make a mistake and pull into one of the earlier parking lots, as soon as you get out of the car and look uphill you'll see the one I'm talking about.

The only downside is, it can be slightly tricky pulling into that primo viewing area from the right lane. It's pretty curvy. If you're uncomfortable with the amount of traffic, you can go past it a quarter mile or so until you get to a straighter stretch of road that has wide shoulders, and you can turn around there. Much better sightlines for the cautious driver, of which i have no doubt you are one. Just keep in mind that if you're catching the bridge from that viewing area at sunset, the bridge will be to your left and the sunset will be behind you, and a little to your right. You'll be west-northwest of the bridge. The bridge and the city will be well lit with the direct light of the setting sun, and it's really very beautiful, but if you want to catch the bridge silhouetted against the sunset, you need to be viewing it from the city itself - and I'm not even sure where exactly in the city, because the location of the sunset varies so much from month to month.
