Sanity -> ROAD TRIP! (7/9/2009 11:17:34 PM)

Who's doing a road trip this summer?  [8D]

Where are you going?

If you're staying behind, is it because of the economy or something else?

I'm going, we're heading out for just over a week, leaving this coming Saturday morning. Gonna rough it in Yosemite for the first night, and then spend the next night in a four star hotel near downtown San Francisco. After that we'll drive on up through the Redwoods, meander along 101 as it follows the pacific ocean beaches and finally head back home via Crater Lake and a "Star Party" at Mt. Bachelor in the middle of Oregon.

I'll post some pictures of the trip...

Who knows which is the best historical or science museum in San Francisco, and what else should we see (that's fit for family viewing)? The zoo, or the aquarium... Alcatraz... what are the must sees for someone who is on an extremely short visit?

Where's a good restaurant there, someplace nice but not really extravagantly expensive, where we can order up some great seafood?

GreedyTop -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/9/2009 11:43:40 PM)

Fishermans wharf is good for seeing sea lions.. (pier 39, Ithink?)  there's also a few awesome restaurants there.

I love S.F.

Not doing any traveling this summer, like I'd like to, but it's not much different than most years, for me.  I just don't have the funds.  My splurge comes tomorrow, and thats just to travel about 3 hrs away to spend a day or two with others from here.

Have a blast on your trip!  It sounds great!

kuriouswitch -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 12:12:47 AM)

I'd love to go on a road trip this summer but will be unable to because of lack of funds and having no car doesn't help. oh well, maybe next summer.
Have fun in SF, I've never been there before but it sounds like you'll have fun.

CatdeMedici -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 1:56:07 AM)

Greedy is right, its Pier 39 and the BEST meal: buy your boiled seafood right there and eat it right there on the bay! YUMMMMMM and don't miss Ghiardelli's!

After 4 years of grieving for My Mom, we are back to the beach for a September trip! ( She passed right after we came back from a lovely trip there)

WyldHrt -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 2:06:04 AM)

Chinatown is always a good bet in San Francisco. Lots of nifty stuff and great hole-in-the-wall restaurants  (if you like Chinese food, of course) [:)]

Please have my padded room ready when we return.

We used to go to the Outer Banks every year (this will be the first year in the last ten that I don't go....booooo) and made that nine hour trip with two little ones. What made the trip easier is leaving early. The car would be packed the night before and we'd leave around 3:30 in the morning. They would sleep until about 8:00ish and would we get the bulk of the driving done nonstop. Plus you avoid a lot of traffic and still have the whole afternoon at the beach.

we do plan to leave early, Aileen. The problem though is check in time at the hotel is 4pm [8|]

LaTigresse -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 4:05:39 AM)

ME me me me MEEEE!!!!

Can you tell I am excited?

I am loading up the M3 with my gear and heading for SW Colorado the last week of July. Going to spend time with my youngest sister and her son, and my youngest brother and his family. I am so pumped for this road trip. My sister is now working for a very well known horse trainer, showing, and has already been in several of this person's television programmes. I am very proud of her.

We are also going to do one of our, on horse back, up in the mountains, camping trips.

We are also going to have a pork roast with the Iowa pork and fresh corn on the cob I will be taking. They have been craving good Iowa pork and corn........(feel free with the jokes because there is NO place that has better of either).........so I am taking a whole loin and a case of corn right from the fields.

I am going to be kind and spend a day with the wacko that birthed me, and scan some old family photos from several generations ago, while I am at it. One day with her will be about my limit.

It is a long drive, usually done in two days, but I am just going to power straight through on the way there. But on the way back I am stopping to see a good friend, former lover, for a evening of hilarity and hot sex in Kansas City, then back to the grind. Should be about a week long trip, give or take a day.

sirsholly -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 4:07:12 AM)

LeeAnn...that sounds perfect!

SilverMark -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 4:13:58 AM)

As of tommorow at about 7 a.m. off to the wilds of that large metropolis known as Winamac, Indiana for 10 days of sitting in my boat and watching the river pass by!....4 days in Indianapolis to visit my parents and introduce my Father to his great Grand son and re-acquanting myself with all the food I miss by living too far away!....I will also take my mother book shopping....doesn't sound like too much but at 80 she doesn't get out as much as she would like so I will spoil her horribly with all the books she will want to read!
Catch up with a few of my friends from Indy, play a round of golf in the "Mark isn't as large an asshole as you remember when he lived here open"....then slowly drag my ass back South to resume the torture of owning retail businesses in these economic times!

Just about perfect for me!

sirsholly -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 4:16:15 AM)

Mark...that sounds awesome!!!

(please note that i am refraining from making any wise ass remarks about your lack of hair.)

SilverMark -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 4:19:44 AM)

duly noted holly!....however one more shot before I go would be entirely apropriate....so go ahead!

Boy, you guys are going to have fun. Too bad you have so little time in San Francisco; you could easily spend a week there, especially if you have kids.

For great seafood, pasta, and sourdough, try Alioto's on Fisherman's Wharf. Try to get an upstairs window table, as close to one of the corners on the west side as you can get. Great viewing on the Bay and the bridge. If Alioto's is full, Scoma's is practically next door, and they're supposedly just as good. Both places are much better than touristy restaurants like Pier 39, which is more about the experience than the food. A better way to put it is that a lot of the restaurants there are tourist attractions that serve food, Alioto's and Scoma's are restaurants first and foremost.

For science museums in San Francisco, try the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, or the Randall Museum, which i think is only about a mile or so east of there. I don't know how old your kids are, so you should check out both websites and see which of the two would most closely fit the age and interests of your family. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but the Academy of Sciences is a little spendy (for adults, anyway).

If you're into astronomy, check out the San Francisco Amateur Astronomers. They have star parties a couple of times a month, and at least one of those is held on top of Mount Tamalpais, north of the city - which is probably the best place in town to watch the sunset, too. The eastern peak is the best place to view the city, and the west peak is the place to watch the sun set. The star parties are held halfway between the two peaks. I found them by accident one night on my way down from the mountain, and they were very friendly people.

I don't know anything about the zoo or the aquarium there, but I can tell you about the cable cars. They're crowded. Your best strategy, if you're starting from the wharf, might be to head a block uphill from the starting point and grab a car as it comes to the first stop. They always start out with some space on the car so they have room for picking up passengers along the way, and that way you don't have to stand in line for an hour at the starting point. Hopping onto an almost-full car also allows you the opportunity to ride outside the car, which is way more cool anyway. Just to check that they're still doing that, though, try to observe a car as it heads out of the starting area. If it's packed to the rooftops, then you might just have to bite the bullet and wait in line with everyone else. It's worth it, though, if you have the time. You can ride to Chinatown and back, and it's probably the best way to tour the historic parts of the city. Try to ride on the left side of the car as it leaves the wharf, so you can see down Lombard (the twistiest street in the world) as you go past.

I don't know about Alcatraz, either, because i didn't want to spend a half day on that. Seemed like a waste of time to me, to be honest. Just the Wharf alone will take you the better part of the day - and keep your wallet in your pocket as walk past the shops on Embarcedero. Those guys can smell a dollar bill from a mile away, and they'll be on you like sharks on a dead fish if you look like you're even thinking of buying something. I've never seen such aggressive shopkeepers in my life.

Hope that helps a bit. Have fun, whatever you do!

pahunkboy -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 6:17:10 AM)

My old church is going on a camp out trip.   I may join them. It sounds fun.

When I was in Americore we went camping at Bald Eagle State forest.   It could be 100 degrees, but not up in the woods.  The tents were near a babbling brook.   The place was way up in the mountains- but only 1/2 tank of gas to go there.  :-)

When the weather cools - maybe I will drive to Chicago.   Not in September or October tho, PA is at its best those months.  :-)

Sanity -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 6:32:44 AM)

Wow!

Thank you to everyone who responded!

I posted the OP last night at 1:00 am and then went to sleep, and woke up to all these great replies.

We won't miss Ghiardelli's, CatdeMedici. It's kind of a tradition, we have to hit someplace like that every summer because of the wannabe food critic on board, and Ghiardelli's sounds great!

We'll be sure to see the Sea Lions and Fisherman's Wharf, Greedy. Have fun on your road trip! And I'll try to make it to Chinatown, Wyld. I love Chinese food... and it just sound interesting. I've never been there.

Colorado will be awesome for you La T. I prefer the Idaho wilderness, if only beacuse I'm more familiar with it, but I have a good idea of the kind of Rocky Mountain high that you're going to feel while packing your way up into the back country there, your trip sounds awesome.

Remember to keep your eyes on the ball while teeing off Mark...

And Panda especially, thank you for the great post and all the tips. I've printed your post out, and I'm taking it with me for future reference when I get there. We'll eat at Alioto's, and yeah, in some ways I wish the stay in San Francisco were longer but I really prefer wild places, and I'm the one who is driving. [:)]

We'll squeeze all that we can in while there though.

I was driving by snow banks this time last summer, up in the Grand Tetons and at Yellowstone. We played in the snow the summer before last, up on Mount Rainier, too.

Are you really living if you never get out and have some fun? I feel like I'm suffocating if I don't get my road trip every summer.

Sanity, you should take jackets even in the summer going to San Fran. It can get chilly there even in July.
If I'm fully recuperated by next month after surgery I may take a ride up to New Hampshire and Maine to see amily and friends.
But, I'll cut through Pa. and Central N.Y. on the turnpike instead of going through N.J., NYC and Conn to avoid taffic.

Sanity -> RE: ROAD TRIP! (7/10/2009 10:23:35 AM)

Thanks for the words of advice popeye. Yeah, we'll take jackets, I never thought about Frisco being chilly but I know Yosemite gets chilly this time of the year.

Get well soon popey, hope you get to make your road trip and I hope you enjoy it!
