Not that I love everything about Google, but damn, the battle will be fun!

History in the making.

Google to launch PC operating system

By Richard Waters in San Francisco

Published: July 8 2009 07:43 | Last updated: July 8 2009 07:43

Google has taken direct aim at Microsoft’s core personal computer software business, with the announcement of a PC operating system to rival Windows.

...

Google also promised that the new software would solve many of the frustrations felt by users of Windows-based PCs, from slow start-up times to threats from computer viruses.

Google’s venture into the PC operating system business caps a steady move into software that has seen it encroach on to Microsoft’s turf.

...

In other veiled attacks on the Windows operating system, Google added that users “want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them”, and that they “don’t want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates.”

...

The new software, based on the so-called kernel, or core, of the open-source Linux operating system, had been designed to run Web-based applications such as those developed by Google itself, the company said, making it the first PC operating system developed from scratch for the internet age.

In another attack on one of the main pillars of Microsoft’s business, Google said developers would be able to write applications for the Chrome OS using standard web development tools – a challenge to Microsoft’s own developer tools business.

Google joins battle with Microsoft with Chrome operating system

quote:

“Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS,” said Sundar Pichai, a Google Vice President, and Linus Upson, engineering director, in a blog post. “We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you on to the web in a few seconds.”

The news spread quickly on the blogosphere, with many commentators applauding the move. The influential TechCrunch blog said it was a “genius play”, arguing that Microsoft’s XP software on netbooks was eight years old, making it a good target.

“Let’s be clear on what this really is,” MG Seigler, a TechCrunch writer, said. “This is Google dropping the mother of bombs on its chief rival, Microsoft.”

Google's official blog announcement

About damn time, I think.

At last, another rival to enable the exodus from microshaft.

Unless the damn thing costs hundreds of dollars, has security bugs, and crashes regularly, it cannot be a viable competitor.

About time.  MS charges way too much for its software.  Amounts to a tax on everyone who uses a computer, including businesses.

Microsoft's profit margin is around 67%.  Competition will drive that down.  And send the unemployment rate in Redmond a lot higher.

I have Vista and that did it for me, win 98 I was happy with until it started getting holey. Vista might be ok for some, but my chipset according to intel can run vista, but not at it's best, my puter is one of those from the beginning of vista being put on retail machines. When the thing plays up, I keep waving an XP pro disc at it to behave itself, as I am sure my computer responds to my moods. One day, Vista will get it and XP PRO should fly on this machine, but the plan is to dual boot wuth Linux XP desktop, before I jump out of microshit forever. But who knows, I might have an I- Mac coming next year.

I like the browser cept collarme doesnt work on it, I would definitely look at it as a OS tho, I use google stuff a LOT, with few complaints.
IM holding onto XP as long as I can, microsnot has a lot to do to woo me over 7. I like to tweak and fiddle and 7 didnt like that at all, not as bad as vista but I wont touch that with a barge pole.

Currently running both XP and Mac... but use Google for all my cross-platform stuff like documents and use OpenOffice on both systems. If I didn't -have- to run Microsmut because of work (as in 'they provided me with a microsmut-based PC to use at my desk') I'd be Mac-immersed.

I *still* can't get into MACs. I don't like them, or their interface. I'm too well trained.

This coming from a music major! They're all the school has >.< (and, yeah, I can *still* use them better than most of the others, heh.)

I have been happy running Ubuntu for about a year now, so I do not think I will switch. However, nice to hear that somebody is trying to bring some life into the OS market.

I say break up all big companies like Google and Microsoft, and watch at least 10 new OSes and Browsers come to market.

I'm not one of those who derive an enormous amount of glee seeing Msft fall.  Thanks to them I have a computer that runs universally accepted software....with universally accepted protocols.

Before them (yeah....I'm old enough)....no one knew what was agreed upon, emulation software was the norm....to put it mildly....it sucked.

I happen to be one of those who is quite thankful for Msft (and I've never had a problem with ANY of their OS's.....and my office runs about 16 computers...not a lot....more than some...fewer than others.  Mine work....and always have).

But are you a tweeker, or just a user that wants the thing to effing work when they need it ?

Maybe that is the difference between users of M$, those that can happily wade into the mechanics of the programming and those that cannot, dare not for fear of screwing it further. Maybe it is, we are all wrong, the idea that an operating system was meant to just work is a fallacy.

Oh, and those registry cleaner things, mechanics etc, scary, as a normal user, I fear those things, for I am aware, that I as just a user am not aware just what needs deleting and what does not from the scan results, and people blindly trust those things, scary.

Not at all.

It works when I need it.

(Those aren't Microsoft products.  Possibly your ire is misplaced).

No, they are not, but I believe there is one endorsed by microshit, or at least something to do with them.

But registry cleaners, many use them in the belief that they do what they say they do, which is fine, they do get rid of some junk, but also take chunks out of other things that are not junk. The result is, though a system might appear to move quicker, it will for a while, until all the holes stack up and things stop working. Often leading to a person believing their pc is shot and time for a new one.

I f windows was so fab, why would there be a market for such programmes, obviously people believe windows needs a helping hand, or else why use them.

The same reason someone other than Firestone or Goodyear sells Armorall for your tires.

It's why you comb your hair, wash your jeans, use a clean fork each time, buy new shoes when the old ones don't suffice any longer, get a new car every few years, don't send the exact same Hallmark card out to your Mom every Mothers day, occasionally have soup, choose sourdough over wheat, and every once in a while....change your toothbrush.

(That's why).

I used Chrome for about five minutes, in some ways it was quite innovative but in other ways it was like going back a decade because people like buttons to press; lack of buttons means I lose interest. It was said this OS was going to work through Chrome, not sure how that would work?

As far as future Google projects go I think Google Wave looks far more exciting than a new OS which probably wouldn't end up being compatible with everything you needed to run. People moan about Windows being bloated but at the same time they moan about lack of plug and play in other OS's, seems to me you can have one or the other not both i.e. to be able to plug something in that works straight away you have to accept the OS is constantly looking for things of that nature to be plugged in and so therein lies the waste.

People in general have no interest in looking through the list of resources to see what they don’t need because at some point they’ll forget they turned it off and when they plug the thing in it won’t work. Kind of like those people such as myself that keep things on the off chance I’ll use them, that which I need I can’t find for all the crap I don’t need.
