Win 7 is to Vista as XP was to ME. I've been running the beta and now the RC and they're what Vista SHOULD have been. This is similar to the addage that even-numbered Star Trek films don't suck. Everyone just loves to hate Microsoft. Not me - I love them. For one thig, I've made a pretty good career out of doing IT admin for Windows-based systems. For another, when one of my PC's crashes or misbehaves, a reboot will generally take care of it. I've had Macs crash that just never worked the same after without a complete re-install. And even then all was not always well. Mac has always had a disctinct advantage in that Apple creates both the hardware and the OS. They dictate every aspect of what goes into a Mac. It makes life a LOT easier. MS writes an OS that has to work on a million combinations of system boards, sound cards, video processors, memory modules, etc, etc, etc. Yes, there are standards, but they really don't mean quite what you would expect. So MS has to load a million drivers to make sure the computer works. Not even a little bit easy. And then you get companies like Dell, HP, Gateway, etc who insist on loading crap software before your new PC ever enters your home. Blech! And even with all that disparate hardware floating araound, Windows does a pretty good job of pulling it all together and making it work. I have a homebuilt PC with an OEM copy of XP Pro that hums along just fine - no tweaking, no 3rd-party crap, nothing I don't need. I do video editing on it and it cranks away and asks for more. Single CPU, 2gb RAM, and a good video card. Nothing fancy, just good, solid pieces-parts. And it runs rings around my Mac. The bottom line for Linux, Mac (Linux with a pretty face), Ubuntu, Chrome, whatever, is that the business world will continue to use Windows products because they do what business need them to do and Windows IT folks are plentiful. Linux is making some in-roads but it's as much a political issue within many of those compaines as anything else. Businesses like to have a company stand behind the products they buy. Linus Torvald* does not do tech support. Not that it matters, but when I bought my 1st computer there was no such thing as a PC or MS-DOS. I'm SO glad those days are far behind. ~Dave *Linus Torvals is the creator of Linux
