I agree that it is often considered a matter of hierarchy and structure, but I also agree that it is wise to base heeding someone's words to their actual experience, wisdom and purpose.  Good luck in your search.

i have a mentor in the lifestyle and we've been working together for four years now. i'm able to discuss a variety of things with her and it helps a great deal. outside of this i learn like most do from the things i encounter both on and offline. i believe it is important to be exposed to divergent thoughts and manners of relating. it is both educational and it keeps me in touch with myself and open minded about other experiences which is important. i recognize there are some that have had long standing in the community and are viewed respectfully, but i'm more likely to speak to someone that knows me intimately and can literally give me a reality check when necessary.

Elders of the tribe were advisers, each was well thought of and each was knowledgeable not just in their field but with the caution that come with age.

Old folks that didn't have the intellect were treated with respect but not part of the leadership group that was known as elders
