Weren't finger rings originally a symbol of ownership ? Maybe derived from the annulus pronubis of the Romans, a betrothal ring, same thing really, it says keep off, the wearer is an owned person. I think the wearing of no rings symbolises availability, but having said that I wear three rings, all self made at different times of my life. The latest being a wrought iron ring, which seems not to want to come off. Am working on another though, iron inlaid with the melted down gold of my wedding ring.
