...The OP raises something i've wondered about for a while, though- it seems as though one should be able to run a legal house of prostitution simply by treating it as a private pornography studio... but obviously there's a catch somewhere? ...

on a related note:
some folks in LA thought they could run a swinger's club out of their enormous 35,000 square foot porn studio...and it worked for awhile...everyone coming in paid money and signed a release...the release included verbage that you would be filmed at the event, because you were considered as auditioning for their productions.  they thought that would protect them.

they didn't stay open very long. (such a shame, it was a hellafun place!!!) we have been told by an excellent source that they didn't think they had to apply for and be granted a permit to operate a "sexual encounter club" and they were shut down by the local JohnnyLaw for not having the proper permits.

sounds like  Club Fuck.

btw, in Britain they now have, basically,"anto-spank" laws.

spankjing porno still seems to be a massive niche market, however.  And half at least seems to be British.

So where are these people filming it?  the Bahamas?  where?

also, with the amount of torrent-thieves, realistically how have the profit margins changed ( meaning woukd there be any point for a newcomer to even have a go)?

Hiya Folks,

Most porn (at present) is made in Los Angeles; the legal aspect of shooting porn are only part of the issue.  Yes, it's specifically legal to shoot porn in California, because in 1987, the state of California attempted to shut down the porn industry, and had the unexpected and unintended effect of causing the state Supreme Court to rule that not only was there a difference between pornography and prostitution, but that the first amendment also had a role in supporting pornography.  People v Freeman

A few other factors are at work though.  Until recently, to produce any sort of movie required expensive equipment, and trained professionals to operate it.  There just isn't a bustling movie industry in Des Moines, Iowa.  Making a porn required producers, directors, camera operators, lighting techs, photographers, and people with enough money to finance the whole operation.  Today, as digital technology leaps forward, fewer and fewer people are needed to make a video, but there's still a level of technical expertise and on screen talent required that Podunk, Michigan simply isn't likely to offer.

Shooting good porn often requires having good weather.  This makes places like Southern California and Florida great locations; places like Seattle and Chicago not so much.  The more sunlight you have coming in, the less artificial light you need, and the more natural the scene looks.  The porn coming out of San Francisco, specifically, is usually kinky porn, and even then this is because of the thriving local kink population, from which Kink.com and TwistedFactory draw much of their talent pool from.  Even then, both companies still have to resort to importing talent from Los Angeles on occasion.

I have friends who shoot in Arizona, Colorado, and Las Vegas.  Bangbrothers was started in Florida.  A good quantity of 'amateur' porn is being churned out from every state in the nation.  The legalities aren't really so much the issue, as finding an adequate skill and talent pool to draw from.

John
