Think twice about 'green' transport, say scientists

In some circumstances, for instance, it could be more eco-friendly to drive into a city -- even in an SUV, the bete noire of green groups -- rather than take a suburban train.

More muddled thinking comes to light.

I love trains...

Robert Reich was on NPR the other day espousing a view that I thought was quite sensible. Why doesn't Chrysler start manufacturing for light rail? Keeps them going, gives us mass transport. Win-win situation.

I've read this stuff before and there is no argument against trains, buses or what's called 'mass' transit if only because we have a marriage with the car and it was a...shotgun marriage.

Having created that culture...fewer people than necessary actually ride the train or bus for a direct comparison. On a per capita basis it is trains and buses that will be the future. That occurs gradually over time when in a few years...cars (SUV's) become just expensive to operate...including the gas.

It depends on society as to just when we get there and as compared to the rest of the world that is not wedded to the car..trains and buses are the only way to go.

In the final analysis, when Americans and a few others too...FINALLY are priced out of driving alone in their cars...trains and buses will fully compete. In Europe, society has 'priced' or taxed people out of their cars, here...we have not.

Its a good idea in theory, however it requires a lot of differences in actual training
and a lot of expense in purchasing the new equipment neccisary

Basically it would be the same as asking a struggling phone company to start making computers, because hey, they are both used to communicate, right?

Not meaning to sound like a dick, so ignore me if I am, just trying (poorly) to explain the issues with that plan

I think the article points out more of the faults with bad efficiency of our public transportation systems that are in place now then the actual idea of mass transit as a whole..Some thing we're gonna have to work on as the economy gets weaker.

As a counterpoint
I like the public transport that this state offers, we have 3 light rail systems connected via train. It covers all of the more populised areas and most of the boonies fairly well
only real complaint is that I wish they ran later, or that I didnt work so many late night gigs :D

have you seen a lightrail system? It is that much different from a bus

they could easily make buses, at the heart a bus is just a large auto that runs on diesel
a lightrail system, like the TRAX system here, requires tracks (obviously) much larger vehicles and completly different requirements for power and propulsion.
It is easier for Union Pacific to make the changes needed for that then Chrysler one would imagine

Austin, TX is working on light rail and their buses run on natural gas. Monthly bus pass is $15 there and that was how I would get around for work, docs and clubbing. Cheaper than paying for a car, gas, insurance...

I wish the monthly passes were that cheap here, they used to be, right up until the light rail system was installed
a lot of it seems to depend on to what extent the Public transport is subsidized by the local or state government.

Now we pay about 3 times that.

I hope it's dry there, cause all the school buses I've ever seen have had problems with rust, and that's out here in the desert

it's only 30 out here for a monthly pass, but the buses only run once an hour, so most of the time you can bike/walk to where you're going quicker then when the bus can get you there

they looked pretty rusty
Saw it on the TV
The guy that runs it is a nutter, he probably thinks the rust will help stop nuclear waste from entering or something

capmetro.org is federal, state and locally funded and is quite busy. They also provide special transportation for disabled folks (got a friend working for them). They encouraged their drivers and other workers to ride the buses with no fares at all (special ID needed).

UTA is the same way
Except I am not sure if they receive federal funding
However employees basically get fre bus passes, that keep even after they retire
