RCdc -> Susan Boyle admitted to clinic under police escort. (6/1/2009 2:13:42 AM)

I watched the threads that appeared on CM about Ms Boyle, as well as the media coverage and the way people are idiotic to act like that with this woman and turned her into a freak show.
Y'all Happy now?

Haven't ever watched BGT, except when an old friend was on it. Anyone remember the bloodthirsty mad doctor?

The poor woman. Shame on the lot of 'em.

She's a grown woman. No one forced her to do anything.

Sounds like show business may not be the best for someone with uncontrolled Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Hopefully she'll get it under control now.

Sad to hear.   Hope she gets help and gets well.    M

Now I am thinking of Britney Spears' head shaving incident.......

I think her breakdown is very understandable. I don't think she was aiming to be the world's most famous person when she entered the competition and the storm of fame came very fast and very hard. I think most people would break at some point under those circumstances. However I'm sure she'll receive some excellent care and after some days of R&R she'll come back and continue on her road. At least I'm waiting excitedly for the album that's she's scheduled to record in Prague later this summer.

Yes, she is a grown woman, but the way the media behaved is what mainly contributed to the breakdown and she had no control over that, nor do I expect anyone could have predicted the amount of attention she received.  She just wanted to sing, not be hounded about everything from her sex life to a makeover.

Interesting diagnosis.  Feeling a "little anxious" is a far cry from GAD.  I've read nothing that states she suffers from an anxiety disorder of any kind.  What I've read is that she has some intellectual challenges based on a lack of oxygen as an infant.

Do YOU have Generalized Anxiety Disorder?  I do.  Was diagnosed nearly 20 years ago.  I am one of the people who manages to control it without medication, most of the time.  There are some instances and events that no matter how good you are at controlling it, an attack can spiral out of control because of surrounding circumstances.  Most people in Susan Boyle's situation would likely suffer from some moments of anxiety, it doesn't mean they have GAD.  It is totally different.

pixidustpet -> RE: Susan Boyle admitted to clinic under police escort. (6/1/2009 4:56:12 PM)

mama and i were talking about miss boyle this morning.  one thing i mentioned to her is that miss boyle has a "learning disability"...british diagnosis we'd more likely call a mild case of down's syndrome.

her facial features speak to me of this (i worked with kids with varying disorders for a little while) and so does her odd behavior seen at the begining of the video of her first performance.  its *not* odd if you realize that she's a bit developmentally delayed.

now...if you take into account that the group that won are a LOT different in their performing talent than hers, i can absolutely understand why she would be so devistated.  the two performances are like comparing an apple and a rutabaga.  yes, they're both grown on plants, but that's about it.  her performance is one thing, and the group that won are entirely a different species.  not better, not worse, just different and more preferred by the voters.

and if she had not been prepared a bit that yes she COULD lose, especially after the huge public accolades that her (admittedly) wonderful voice had gotten, yes, absolutely it would be a huge shock to her.

i hope she recieves some good counselling, and has someone there with her to make sure she isnt taken advantage of.  bless her.

You can't diagnose someone with Down's Syndrome (which is a specific chromosonal defect) or other disabilities from TV clips.
We can have opinions and make private assumptions but to voice our diagnostic theories on a public forum is irresponsible.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Susan Boyle admitted to clinic under police escort. (6/1/2009 6:06:21 PM)

Dark, I'll tell you why she's a freak show. You probably already know this, but ugly folks can't make it in the music business anymore. Some of my favorite singers of all time are Johnny Cash and George Jones (yes, I'm a hillbilly [:D]), but they are physically unattractive fellows. Not a chance in Hell would they get a record contract in Nashville now a days. I love Buddy Holly, but I can't imagine him doing anything but shows at county fairs now a days.

I know that looks aren't a new attraction for performers. My mother grew up in the 50's and she's not a big fan of Elvis' music. She like many of her teenaged girls thought he was hot (or as my mother said, "He was just......just.....fine! LOL) Equally, I can still remember my father saying that Nancy Sinatra was "alright looking...kinda cute...but not enough curves" when the "Boot are Made for Walking" song came on the radio when I was 14 (she came to a USO show when he was 22 in VietnamLOL.) So sex appeal has always been an attribute for performers.

But truly talented folks could still get heard in the past regardless of their looks. I don't think that's true anymore, and it's sad. I haven't really followed this woman's story. I hate reality shows. But I'd say from what I've seen, that her looks or lack of looks is what has made so many people fascinated. It's a fucked up testemony to what our culture has become. We worship nothing but the superficial.

Edited to add: I know I made lots of grammar and spelling mistakes. I had to switch keyboards, and I've had a ghastly stomach virus all week. So I haven't really cared. I'm feeling better today though, but I'm still in a blah mood.

lighthearted -> RE: Susan Boyle admitted to clinic under police escort. (6/1/2009 6:29:00 PM)

I just hope she gets good care and rest.  I think people who feeled they are prepared for success are not equipped to deal with it, let alone someone who is, in essence, a novice.

edited for my lame ass typo.

As i have a niece with Down syndrome there is no s in the word Down. I really don't care what Miss Boyle has. I enjoyed her singing and i am sorry to see her life relegated to a goldfish bowl life as the press and everybody else hounded her. I doubt we would do well with the constant spotlight. My understanding she was exhausted and tired. She needs time to rest and hopefully relax.

I hope people will let her be and allow her to get back to the normalcy of her life.

It reminds me of how Princess Diana and many of the stars are treated. I realize famous and all but it has to be really annoying to be treated like you are some ________ fill in the blank..

I would not like the press and everybody else following me and pointing at me.

I'd make ya chicken soup if I was nearer.  Get well soon hey.  Big hugs and love.

I totally agree with the rest of your post.  The reason they made her famous was because she was expected to have an ugly voice.  I find that disgusting.  I watched her audition, all I saw was a woman.  People wanted her to win because they saw an underdog.  That is embarressing as a human being to know people think like that.

I wanted her to win because I loved the way she performed "I had a dream"

(Ok, after seeing Les Mis in London I have a certain fondness for the song, and Susan DID nail it, IMO)

susie -> RE: Susan Boyle admitted to clinic under police escort. (6/2/2009 12:25:28 AM)

FR

Where on earth did the idea that Susan has Down Syndrome come from? No wonder she is under such stress if people go around making up stuff like that. Yes she did have a problem with oxygen deprivation at birth however her brother has just been on tv and said that he has never heard of the fact that she has "learning difficulties" and that she has the normal school leaving qualifications.

Perhaps if people didn't make things up she might not be as stressed as she is.

colouredin -> RE: Susan Boyle admitted to clinic under police escort. (6/2/2009 12:36:20 AM)

*Rolling eyes at the Down comment* Noticing 'facial characteristics? Really?

Tbh I did not like her singing style, I always felt that she rushed through the songs but I thought she was so polite, there were actually a few really polite people on this year (Stavros Flatley was another)

I feel that the whole thing was appealing, I think I have mentioned this before, if she were beautiful she wouldnt have been in the final and to me that is awful, for that message to be sent to the world and the woman herself shows what complete idiots the national press and a fair few members of society are. Radio shows about giving her a make over, cheap jibes on saturday morning tv. Here was a woman who wanted to show people that she could sing but instead her entire life was questioned, the public leaping on any sign of flaw and many excited that she didnt win (not because she wasnt good but out of some sense of bitter jealousy)

This to me makes me question the nature of programs like this. Even more so it makes me question human beings...I have found some wanting.

greenearth21 -> RE: Susan Boyle admitted to clinic under police escort. (6/2/2009 12:39:17 AM)

You'd think someone auditioning or making an attempt for such a career would figure that it comes with a stalker-razzi-opinion filled life. After all...isnt fame (along with making great music or whatever it may be) part of the package????
sheesh
