We don't do a lot of stuff that requires safety knowledge being refreshed, If we did I'd take it as part of seeing to my personal saftey to refresh myself as well as him being refreshed.

So is this a discussion I should have had when we started?!?!?  Oops.

Perhaps I should have asked about it but I didn't.  He said he wouldn't do anything to hurt me (in a non-good way) and he hasn't.  It's a bit late to start worrying about it now.

Never "too late" to worry about it.  Chatting about safetly or concerns is not something either side should take lightly regardless of who's doing the talking.  Grab a few books and read up.

MissShibari,

Most of my post was supposed to be light-hearted.

Neither one of us are big drinkers and have never played with anything that could potentionally cause injury after drinking.  We don't do much that can cause injury in the first place.  Discomfort, yes; injury, no.  We are monogamous so no need to worry about someone else crossing a line.  He's given me safe words for slow-down and stop but I've never had to use them.  He's always slowly introduced something new to allow me time to get used to the sensation so no worries there either.  I may not have thought much about injuries but I do think he has.

As to the quote I prefer "Mr. Babcock! Knowledge is power."  (Huge points if anyone knows the movie without using google.)

But, in any case, your point is a valid one.

When it comes to playing safe do you refresh yourself on your knowledge every so often?

Yes. More keeping abreast of what's current in first aid than re-reading things, making sure anything needed in emergency is functional, that sort of thing.

If you are a Dom / Domme do you refresh your skills with 'toys' every so often?

Yes. If I haven't been using them lately, I'll usually spend a bit of time making sure muscle memory is where I want it before any encounter that might lead somewhere fun.

Do you ever ignore basic safety such as don't hit near the kidneys?

Depends on what you mean by "basic safety." I've read things that say activities such as a hand spanking are too dangerous to undertake after a single alcoholic drink. I ignore that regularly. I generally go by the same rules as for driving- cover one eye and everything's fine.

Ok, that was a joke- I mean, one or two drinks with dinner? No issues later. A couple beers at the bar before retiring to the bedroom? Again, no issue. And there are times with my most recent ex that she got a pretty intense spanking when both of us were a little drunk... but nothing that requires a lot of thinking, or where quick reflexes are needed.

So I suppose it's safe to say I break some "basic" safety rules regularly.

Not every so often, but rather on a continuous base. I teach bondage, run an amateur bondage site, and sometimes do performances at fetish parties, and I'm very keen on reading up on new insights concerning safety in general as well as on specific types of ties (and contributing my own take on it, including the things learned the hard way).

You might also want to check if that bondage section of Screw the roses is still state of the art (I have a copy, but it's "somewhere", if I haven't lend it to a friend). Until a few years ago, there was a lot of yada yada going around about circulation issues and hitting "pressure points" as they are used in shiatsu. By now, most experienced and semi-professional riggers have come to the conclusion that the main dangers are not so much circulation issues but rather nerve compression problems, which are FAR more dangerous. Also, opinions on soft cotton ropes have shifted tremendously towards materials with a higher breaking strength. So I'd really recommend anyone not onnly to revisit the classics, but also to spend some time catching up.
