Yes, it happened sometime yesterday. We didn't get home till late, and found the door unlocked and the house literally tossed. They took my flatscreen monitor, but not the computer, for some reason. Took a lot of other stuff, most of it I accquired at great cost. I have mentioned before that I have a very low opinion of theives, and this is why. I am not wealthy, the things I have I have had to work for. Then someone comes along, smashes a window, and in about ten minutes, now has several years of my life.

I have had things stolen from me before, I know how it goes. I'll be angry for a few days, and paranoid for a few weeks, then I'll go back to the long slow process of replacing the things I need and want. Things like all my tools, TVs, camera, my grand daughter's coats and jackets. Now who would steal a child's coat? And what is more confusing is the stuff they didn't take, like medicine and coins. But anyway, it all seems to be one big circle, you work all the time to get a few nice things, just in time for someone to come along and take it from you. Start over...

I have tried to be more security conscious. I lock everything up, don't show off what I have, distrust strangers, that kind of thing. But I live in a very rural area, if no one's home, they could chop a hole through the roof and no one would notice. I'd put in an alarm system, but it takes the cops 45 minutes to get here, and it only takes a burgler about 10 to get all your stuff.  What really pisses me off is that I opted to waste my money on other things, in stead of getting insurance. Other things like food and gas, told ya I'm not rich.

Somebody mentioned cutting off a theif's hand as punishment in another thread, I can get behind that idea. You'd know who not to trust, and they would have a harder time doing it with only one hand. Of course if they do it again, its clear they can't be rehabilitated, so just kill 'em. Great thing about the death penalty, zero recidivism. But don't go thinking I am cruel to the offenders, I'm not. I couldn't care less about them. The purpose of the penal system is, and always has been, to protect law abiding society from the law breakers. It is not revenge, not punishment, it sure as Hell ain't rehabilitating them into productive citizens. Its about keeping them from doing further harm to innocent people.

OK, done ranting. Now I gotta figure out how to explain to a 3y/o why someone took her "Elmo" jacket.

i hate that this happened to you, and i can especially empathize with having to explain such a grown-up concept to a wee one. i hope they find the crooks and your valuables. Thank G-d nobody was hurt or even home when the robbery happened.

ALL THE BEST!

Just an idea to try and help you out. Check the local pawn shops and tell them what was stolen. I had my house broken into several years ago but was able to get a LOT of stuff back from the pawn shops after letting the police know my stuff was there. Little thieving bastard got 8 years for it too, I'm happy to add. I hope things get better for you.

Definately amateurs.
Do like I do and put 12 guage 00buck shotgun shells on your window sills so that they're visable from outside the house.

Or go down to the surplus store, and pick up a claymore mine.

Paint "NO TRESPASSING" on it.

Leave it next to your front door.

Joseff, I'm really sorry to hear this happened to you, man. My wife and I were burglarized years ago, shortly after we were married. It took me another 20 years to put together a stereo system that sounds as good as the one I lost that day. I have no sympathy for burglars; i hope they catch the sonsabitches, get your gear back, and put the bastards away for some serious time.

This really depends on where you are. In my neck of the woods, pawn shops and the police laugh at you if you try to get them to care.

We are considering adding a security system with cameras that kick in upon motion and record everything to dvd as well as being monitored. If the police are slow in getting there, at least we will have the perp on tape.

Joseff, that must be maddening; you have my sympathies.
I suggest a guard dog.  Like you, I live out in the middle of BFE.
The only homesteads on this road that have been burglarized are those without one of my dogs.
Not only do the dogs have the ability to stop an intruder cold, but just the presence of 170 lbs. of angry jaws and claws makes cretins look for easier pickin's.
You don't have to have Ft. Knox, just a place more secure than the neighbors.

That's the bummer, isn't it?  The police are there to clean up the mess afterward- they have no ability or resonsibilty to prevent any crime.
Prevention is the job of the homeowner.  It's a pity we live in a world where some people feel the need to lock themselves in their homes in an attempt to lock the cretins out.

Yeah, you should have got insurance I always suggest it for folks, even renters. You also should mark all your expensive items with something. The police department here will come out and use an ultra-violet invisible ink marker for free. Your police department might do something similar. Anyway, good luck with getting your shit back. You probably won't, but you never know.

janie, dogs can be handled by a pro. But most are not pros. Refer to the "book idea" thread for that. No actually I didn't get that far.

I would be against using an animal for defense. Warning perhaps, but not defense.

Jos, whatever you do, remember the only way to stop a thief is to slow him down to the point where it is not worth the time, which equals risk.

Flat screen monitor ? Forget the deposit when you move. Screw that thing to the wall and put a protective glass over it, use strong cable clamps for the wires, make it require tools. Make them actually work to take your stuff ! That is the real key to it. Another good way is to make it so the stuff cannot be taken without destroying it. You might not have this option, but if I had a really expensive set of speakers, I would go so far as to cut through the TWO cielings downstairs, predrill and use big bolts to hold them in place once I have them placed for the best sound (as they will generally not move afterwards). So to take it they must destroy it, they have no time for that. Nobody wants to buy destroyed stuff.

And realize that, they don't want your stuff, that goes to a fence ASAP. They want money. So that is how you prioritize. In this instance you know what was taken, so you know what is "hot" and this time I guess the pun is intended. When you replace those items, protect them. And I would suggest  a well hidden safe for certain things. If you get one you never tell anyone, not you Mother or brother, I mean anyone. It also must be bolted down. Mine is secured so it would take long enogh to rip out that the time factor is prevalent. Actually I tried to make it frustrating ! Why not ?

But above and beyind all is knowledge. You can leave your doors unlocked and thousands of dollars on the table, but if noone knows it's there you are pretty safe. Even thieves don't just walk up to every door looking for one that is open, and if a pro found one open he might just figure that either there is nothing in there, or like in my case a few weeks ago, there were two guys with guns up here. They have no way of knowing.

Why against guardian dogs, but OK with alert dogs?

Because when anyone is dependent upon another entity or anything to be secure, he/she is not secure nor free.

For me, a guard dog is a defensive tool, just like a pistol.
I don't "depend" on dogs for security, I use them as one layer in a multi-facet system of security.

That is rough, Joseff.  I have been through it a few times myself.

Like Popeye said, they are amateurs.  The flatscreen monitor is worth some cash and is relatively easy to carry.  A used computer on the other hand has virtually no cash resale value (maybe a couple dollars).

Now, to a pro, your personal computer may in fact have very valuable personall information.  But extracting that takes brains, not something your average punk has.

When I was on the beat in the 80's, burglars targeted the VCR and left the TV behind.  VCRs were still valuable, and easy to carry, compared to a clunky TV which had no resale value.  A burglar would typically cause $300 to $400 in damage breaking in to steal a $200.00 VCR which would net them about $20.00 at a pawn shop.

Now, the pros know how to burglarize a home.  They will target a home in an upscale neighborhood with room after room of valuables (far north Dallas had a lot of these) and monitor them so they knew exactly when the homeowners were gone for the day.  They they drive up in broad daylight in a moving van or large appliance or furniture delivery truck.  The neighbors don't suspect a thing.  They clean out the place while virtually hiding in plain sight, and are across the state line or close to an international border sometimes long before the homeowner has returned home.
