Since I'm not the type to suggest others do what I am unwilling to try, I am proposing that people post on this thread stating 2 terms that they use to describe themselves, then providing their definition for the terms.
For example: I am a Dominant -I am the one who is "in charge" in the relationship, and my partner submits to my will.
I am also a Sadist - I enjoy causing pain.
It turns out that this is more difficult than I had expected. Although I know intuitively what I mean by these terms, actually choosing the words to define them clearly is still a challenge. My definitions are short and to the point, but they are complete. It is my hope that they will be taken as written, with nothing added, imbellished, or assumed by the reader. So, how do you define yourselves, and how do you define the definitions?

Oh boy...

OK, this is not some facetious, thoughtless, answer...this is genuinely what I reply, in Real Life, when someone asks me that question...

I am me.

Those that want to know what that means, in all it's colorful, multifaceted depth and breadth make my acquaintance, share a bit of my time and find out what I am.

See, I've avoided labelling myself for a very long time. I identify as a Dom on this site because I have a collared slave, not because I run around posturing and being bossy...although I probably do just that.

My preferences extend to deeply enjoying making consenting females helpless in bondage, causing them pain and making them experience the most intense orgasm I can induce.

Aspects of my personality mean that I am short, sharp, to the point and confident. I have the ability to assess a situation swiftly and make decisions or present choices that are thought through and defensible in a short amount of time. Some people either see this as unnerving or rude. Some find it appealing and perfectly normal.

Now you know that, you will label me. I don't accept that label (but I'll defend your right to use it). I'm just me being me. I'm not being a Sadist, I'm not being Dominant, I'm just doing the things I do in a way I know works for me.

Personally I'm a little bit of this, that and another thing. I have many different facets to who I am and the things I am and am not into doing, Eclectic is another word. Some of my close friends now I come with sub-titles.

First and foremost, I am me and I'm a human being. All the labels, titles, sub-titles and classification systems come secondary.

I serve the Goddes/God first and foremost. I serve humankind but not all in the same way. I tear off labels because they itch, be it material or not. I serve my cat too, so that is the definition of me.

Those terms apply to me pretty well, also and I think your definitions are spot on. They're not everything I am - that list would go on for quite a while as I assume yours would, too. Labels are always a double edged sword but they do provide a good jumping off point.

Did you really think that people could read your question and answer it in the spirit that it was written without all the creativity? I sometimes think the more that people try to separate themselves from the pack the more they actually get lost in the white noise.

OK, two words that define me, and their reasons:

Unfit: I've had a run of bad luck, healthwise, over the last five years or so which has left me needing to drop a couple dozen pounds and regain a shedload of muscle mass.

Hedgewitch: I've always had an affinity with nature, spirituality and instinctiveness. It's been slowly dawning on me that this word comfortably defines what I always have been, spiritually.

Because a definition is brief and you don't want anything assumed by the reader, doesn't mean it is more accurate than a detailed, musing and contemplating one. To an astute reader, a reflective writer may be more touching...assumptions and all.

After making my last post here I was watching CNN and see where the Sears Tower is going to add glass floored observation platforms. You will be able to stand and look straight down at the city below the computerized depiction showed. From that great height what my eyes were drawn to were the dot like people below. The vast buildings were interesting, but plain old people got my attention. I wondered who they were, what they were like and where they were going.

I don't want a definition that only lets me look at dots on the street from the glass decked Sears Tower. I want to be up close, looking and listening to those feeling, loving and desiring people.

You do, but no one else does, example:

I am a Dominant -I am the one who is "in charge" in the relationship, and my partner submits to my will.

Does that mean your partner does not work? You pay for all the bills, expenses? That you will decide what religion they will be? How they will dress, act, what family members they can associate with? Does it mean you will pass them around? Get more subs, chain them in the dark?

I am also a Sadist - I enjoy causing pain.

To yourself? To someone else? To what degree? Mentally? emotionally? physically? How? With or without regard for limits? Risks? Consent?

No I disagree, those may be assumed--but only by you---its not that simple--its like saying, " I am a man" and everyone knows exactly all the details.

Don't make the mistake of assumption, that's how far too many people end up in far too many nightmare relationships.

I started this thread in response to Lady Pact's post about the different definitions we all have for the terms we so randomly use in our posts. I clearly wasn't successful in explaining my intent. I wasn't asking for labels, just definitions of those terms. I thought using terms that we would apply to ourselves would be more interesting than just asking you to define 2 common terms. I felt it would be a fun exercise, and maybe give us some insight on how others see things. I only asked for 2 definitions because I didn't want anyone to have to write an entire reference book, I know people can't be summed up in just 2 words. I will claim some success, however, because many of you have expressed your dislike of being labeled by those very terms. I saw "I am what I am" a lot in those few posts.
