I often hear it claimed that men identify with the male character in standard-issue porn. (I guess the obvious obverse would be that women who like porn identify with the female character - I don't hear as much about why women like porn, though, so I don't know...)

It seems to be the general assumption that this is so.

And maybe it generally is, but I thought I'd make an attempt to double check.

Do you think that it's true? Is it true for you?

If not, what do you like about it? ~ Are there other theories about why men or women like porn that seem to resonate with you?

(I could try and answer for myself, but I want to keep it as short and sweet as I can for now.)

Status: offline 		I like porn, but for me, it's more an indulging of my voyeuristic tendencies than an identification. I like fantasy with my porn--some type of motivation, role playing, etc.--I enjoy the novelty. Because of that, a lot of porn doesn't really appeal to me. Once you've seen one blowjob, you've kind of seen them all.

Status: offline 		I like porn...i dunno about identifying with characters... tho i might hope someone would do that to me indeed, but i would be me not the lady in the picture...still it is more voyeurism i think...some scenarios might be red hot especially if you can see the actors are into what they are doing...
I might get bored with a whole shoddy movie with stupid conversations and lame story line, but then there might be a scene that is worth watching and watching and watching again.
Also I like to surf the net for porn ...just short snippits and a lot of home movies are amongst the stuff you can come across...there are some very very sexy bits of film about and i love to watch it and it turns me on, lovely...
I understand that men generally need more visual stimulation than females and so are into porn more, but i do think that maybe a lot of females have a weird kind of block when it comes to watching porn. I accept it might not be everyones cup of tea but i find it strange that there are so many women who claim not to like it, or at least that it 'doesn't do anything for them'...like i find it somewhat strange that there are people who dislike chocolate...
I never really watch it on my own...except for some of the pictures on this site...and they turn me on too...didn't you ask that question too?

and if it is 2 bi- men and a bi- woman I don't either..
as for why I like porn..I love the sounds in the porn I like..the sounds 2 men make is the most erotic thing ever( to me),,and how they kiss..oh myyyyyyyyyyyyy

oh... the title got me all excited for a moment...

I identify with no one when I watch (gay) porn... instead I use it to fantasize about whichever of the men catches my fancy most and what would happen if I were with him, often creating an entirely different scenario.

When I watch straight porn it's because it's hilarious (I find vaginas particularly silly XD).

Status: offline 		I don't go out of my way to see porn because I can see it every day should I wish and at no cost to me either. So I am curious about what porn is or maybe I'm just a jaded old fart who has seen most of it and lost the excitement. never mind, I only know two males who identified with the female porn star and I recognised their continual talking about it and identifying as a possible cry for help and empathy . My actions was to put them in touch with a specialist counsellor who has a support group for those who have either sexual preferences issues or gender issues and does a lot of work with pre operation transgender folk. Other than that I have no issues with  almost anything (I object if some bloke identifies with my male Malamute as would his girl, my Malamute/Husky who would probably show fact she could de-knacker the bloke), on this earth. I may think it strange but then I'll mostly comment to myself that that person is kinky and to go for it.

Women sometimes like guy/guy porn; inneresting!

Guys are supposed to like girl/girl porn, but I'm typically not very interested in it unless there is some D/s dynamic being depicted.

And, yeah, I sorta feel the same way about porn and chocolate (though not at the same time), Ranja.

This question does stem from a couple of old threads, but I didn't want to mention them specifically because then it might veer to being more about the issues they addressed, and I wanted to try a different angle to see if any other thoughts or pictures emerge.

There has been very little of it that I have actually liked; The Opening Of Misty Beethoven being an exception.

One of my favorite porn experiences was watching gay porn with the volume off and the Carl Stalling Project serving as the soundtrack.

There are plot driven films with erotic content that I have enjoyed such as Shortbus.

Status: offline 		I asked the question in response to a couple of things I'd read, actually.

One was one of those threads where somebody asks why the guys in straight porn are all unattractive. - That was where it was mentioned "...so the target audience, men, can imagine themselves in the scene..."

Another poster said that maybe 'straight' guys are unconsciously attracted to the men in straight porn... An interesting, sort of Freudian, angle to take.

Or, as IronBear gave an example of, another possibility is to "identify" with the actress (again, using the xample of straight porn)...

I guess a third possibility would be to 'identify' with the camera operator - as a voyeur with that omniscient point-of-view...

Or with the director....?

Anyway, all those possibilities were ideas that I teased out when I asked myself if I would like to be in a scene that I liked watching, and the answer was that I'm not sure that I would, or if I would, in what capacity, even though I do like some porn and even find some beautiful.

Ok - gotta stop babbling and wash the dishes and get to work now.

I'm an enormous consumer of sexual material -- for a grrl . . . . . lol . ... Always have been. Read & looked my way thru stacks of Playboy, Hustler, Penthouse, Cheri, Oui, & so on & so forth . . . . . . Watched plenty of all kinds of video . . . .. & from that perspective I'll chime in with the following:

- I like gay men. I like to watch men kiss, & otherwise fool around. I think a significant chunk of what's wrong with this world is men & their issues around loving other men (yeah, duly noted, I'm a sexist pig), & men loving on other men gives me hope. In addition to just bein' plain out hot.

- I almost invariably hate hate hate whatever words & sounds are coming out of the mouths of the 'mainstream' porn sources . . . . . Stupidity is (mostly) a huge turn-off for me, & bad cinema is not conducive to my horniness, either . ... . 'Mainstream' porn is so cinematically execrable that it really makes me wish they'd just throw caution to the wind & start making Python-esque comedic porn, use those wooden acting talents for to make us the viewers laugh . . . . . So, instead I usually turn the sound-track off & put some music on . . . . Especially if I'm actually pursuing 'creating a hornalicious mood in myself' as a goal of watching porn . . . . . . . (I suspect some out there might be saying, is there another reason to watch porn . . . . . . Hehehehe)

Follows is an essay I've been slowly developing on the only kinda porn that really gets me going these days . ... .

Me-Porn

I have to admit that I spend a lot of time looking at my own pics & profile, re-reading my own journal entries, engaging in profligate self-love sessions.

We’ve come up with a name for it at Grrly-HQ, we call it ‘Me-Porn’.

I like to think I started it. I had to do something to fix my broken relationship with my own body. & being an artsy-fartsy type in possession of an itsy-bitsy webcam pre-installed in a new computer, it was only natural to start taking photos. I come from photographers. So, I took nekkid pics of myself. Lots & lots. Nearly a year later & I had 1500 nekkid pics of myself, a number of them certifiably obscene, I’m sure. Working on 3 years later here in the spring of 2009 & there are at least 4,000 naughty to wild pics on my computer, either taken with my own hand or with me as a subject or both.

& some are so striking to my eye that they can stop me in my tracks.

I love the ability to objectify my body, to break it into pieces & have some detachment thereby. Plus, there’s all these things that can be done to the photos, playing with them digitally until they become like paintings, or are rendered more or less ‘real’ in some sense or another. To process the photo & turn it into something that resembles an engraving or a watercolor, this gives me pleasure . . . . . . .

& in so doing I have me some new eyes. Even the face pics become me-porn to the degree that I find & fall in love with photos of my face . . . . .

& what makes it me-porn is that the ‘me’ in the equation spends hours looking at these pics, puts them on as screen-savers, is drawn compulsively back to look at the pics again.

Me-porn incites me-lust, which is probably a good thing, & me-love, which undoubtedly is a good thing . . . . . . . & me-porn is only most obvious in its pictorial form. I was more acquainted with the love of my own words (obviously!), had some practice at the exercise of appreciation towards every little thing I’ve ever written . . . . .

So. Now you know. Me-porn. Make good use of it.

I really dislike porn with a male, and will rarely watch it (most definitely so if there is lots of male genitals flopping about). I never have focussed on the male and saw myself in his place, really. Generally speaking, I'll watch BDSM themed porn, with either a clothed male or another female. The visual images certainly arouse me (a cute ball gagged girl is a pleasure to watch), but moreso I find myself picturing my current loved one (or girl I have a crush on) in whatever situation that is...then I think of watching her squirming around like that. I rarely care how hot the girl is, but find myself delighting in whatever creative scene or interesting fetish I see taking place.

So...take that however ya please for addition to your analysis. :)

Status: offline 		Ah, porn, I just love porn, really I do. I must, I spend hours a week downloading it, only to meticulously catagorize it and stow it away on my HD, rarely to be seen again. Actually, I do not care much for vanilla porn, and will basically only watch it if I intend to make jokes about it. Kind of like MST3000 for porn. The porn industry has given me a new perspective on breast implants, however, I hate them even more now. My favorite porn is BDSM and sex mixed, Mf or Ff. The best is when the practitioners are actually doing the acts, not acting. The one exception to this are the ZFX productions. They are campy, bad Sci-fi/BDSM. Like Attack of the Killer Tomatos meets California Star.

Status: offline 		Not much porn is erotic for me;  but when it is . . . gay male penetrative porn, and I of course identify with the penetrator, and love watching the reaction of the penetrated.
Plus, the guys in gay porn are younger [20's] and WAY hotter, so we get two [minimum!] muscular dudes with vertical erections and beautiful mouths, versus tubby furry short creepy sleazy middle-aged aspies in 'straight' porn.  Ever notice there is more 'real' kissing in gay porn?  Interesting . . .

Also enjoy seeing [or feeling!] two straight guys pleasuring a woman with their mouths/hands only; guess the directors of pornos don't get a boner from it, since you don't see a lot of that.

Status: offline 		Actually, a study a few years back showed that overwhelmingly males, having typically a more visual associative tendency prefer porn such as pictures and movies.  Women on the other hand, having a typically more emotional and imaginative tendency usually prefer written porn such as things like harlequin romance novels and the stories in adult magazines.  Which is why, often, women will look at an adult film and go "Uh... okay?  And what is the draw to this again?", and men normally pick up a 'romance novel' and thumb through before staring blankly and walking away shaking their heads.

Again, not all men or women fit into these respective category, of course, but it was a large majority that did.  Lesbians and gay men, for example, tended to skew the findings quite a bit when taken into their own individual groups, out of just male/female separation, commonly leaning towards the opposite gender's tastes.

I don't recall where this study was, but I'll see what I can do about finding it.  It was actually a rather interesting read.
...god damn I'm such a geek sometimes. >.<

Edit:  Actually, this is a far newer study, and had some very interesting results that you might look at.

Status: offline 		I like porn sometimes, but as a writer, the biggest drawback for me is the cringe-inducing speech and the unconvincing, wooden delivery that couldn't possibly be less arousing for me. Another problem is the mechanical way the actors often go about it- really, if I wanted to have paint-by-numbers sex, I could pick up any guy at a bar. When I'm watching porn, I want to see heat, want to believe that the actors are into it and they want each other, so I generally prefer written material to visual, since it tends to offer more enthusiasm and gives me a look at what's going on in their heads. Male/male is definitely my favorite, although I can't say that I identify with any of the participants, but I do let it spark a fantasy of watching and directing the action.
