I wouldn't read homophobia into this so quickly. A zoo is out to make money, and people love baby elephants. So this one isn't going to make any. What's more if the current theory of homosexuality being somehow innate is accepted, they might not find artificial imsemination that good of an idea.
What's more, if I am not mistaken, any Biblical admonishments against homosexuality no matter how "interpreted" they may be, only apply to humans. Homosexuality is not that uncommon in the animal kingdom, never has been. Then the fact that he mentioned the price of the paciderm seems to indicate that he was more concerned with the fiduciary aspects. Animals have no religion.
