HUGE eye roll for me.......photos of a guy trying to look tough with sunglasses on. Just totally rediculous.

I would suggest that if you can't connect to a person and portray them appropriately, leave taking their pictures to a professional. It's nice that you're looking for ideas here, but other people's ideas won't translate into anything useful. Photography is portraying the dynamic between you and the subject, and plagiarizing does not do that. A "creative block" is something completely different, and has nothing to do with your apparent inability to create the dynamic that is a photographer's bread and butter.

Inspiration comes from a subject, not from the internet.

Status: offline 		I have not met the subject face to face yet. I do not know if there will be chemistry there or not. The whole idea is that I am building a portfolio hoping to become a professional. As a pro I wont necessarily get to pick my models, and so I am trying not to be that picky now. For all I know, he might come across as a wonderfully dominant person and it might not matter what he does. But I am trying to find a few ideas or images that, if his dominance isnt apparent yet since it isnt natural for him yet, I can give him the photos he wants. He wants to look like a male dom. Thats what I am trying to do. I prefer to go into a shoot with at least a few ideas of what to try and create before I get there, rather than have nothing. Maybe a jumpstart, and then once he gets comfortable posing we can move things along on our own steam.

Status: offline 		i won't say Who the picture is of, but here on collarme i saw this picture that i think is sexy as hell.  He is wearing black pants and boots and a crisp white shirt & has one foot on a chair, He's holding a black flogger in one hand, and He's smiling in the picture.  That picture just made me melt and ache for that flogger.  Just an idea.  ~smiles~

Status: offline 		I was thinking something like keys in one hand, cuffs in the other. I am thinking I am going to go more an artistic angle with his shoot and see where the inspiration takes me. I have chains, ropes, floggers and stuff liek that that are all mine. I have talked him into bringing his toybag, little as it might be, to see what might spark something.

Status: offline 		It would be much easier to suggest if we could see him, first, to decide what sort of things would be best for his body type/personality/etc.

One of the 'sexiest' things (in a BDSM sense) for a male dominant, for me, though... isn't even related to BDSM at all, necessarily. I like a well-dressed man (colored collared shirt with a tie, both of which match and the color has to look *good* on him) whose attention is elsewhere, relatively close-up shot with maybe as little as 1/3rd of him in the shot. Bonus points if there's something subtle that's scene-like in the background (a single crop, or rope hanging on the wall; the edge of a St. Andrew's cross; things like that). I've actually seen this type of shot a few times (with and without scene stuff) of different men, even those I don't find remotely attractive, and I'm instantly attracted to just the sense of dominance, confidence and pride that... yes, they're getting their picture taken but it's not nearly important enough for them to pay attention to.

As a stand-alone shot... *_* It makes me swim away. Probably wouldn't work well as part of a set, I dunno.

Just the only thing I can think of offhand without any reference of the person D: sowwy.

Status: offline 		I'd advise taking your inspiration from him.  Draw out his personality and capture it.  For example, recently a newspaper did a photo shoot of me for an article.  The photographer they sent was very good at his job.  He took the time to just sit and talk with me a bit first, get to know me a little.  Then for the photo shoot, he took me outside to a setting he felt I'd feel comfortable with (an he was mostly right) and then he got me going with a conversation on topics I liked while he set up his camera and took random pics.  As I started really chatting, he began taking more photos... nothing posed really, only a little direction from him... he waited for the shot he wanted to come... and it did.  Afterwards he showed me the photo that would be used... one out of maybe fifty he took... and it was a good one, he captured me in a very animated moment, there's a light in my eyes, my whole face is smiling... its a good photo and went well with the article they did on me.

Perhaps try this... have him interact with her.  Or just talk with him about his relationship with her, get him talking about his ideas, opinions, feelings, etc... and take random shots and let the photos come on their own.  Give it a little time and his personality will emerge... and you'll see it in the photos then.

As for settings and things... I'm amazed at what appeals to others.  Take my primary photo on my profile.  Its one of me in the woods... and its not my favorite photo of me.  Yet its always been the most popular with submissives.  Personally I think the one in the suit is better... what a difference perspective makes.

Status: offline 		This is not 1970 where you get a couple of boxes of film and a slinky for Christmas. Shoot all you want. For a conceptual photographer, accuracy is for the unimaginative. It is like lovemaking. Position means something, but timing is everything. It may take you a lot of shots to get the perfect timing. Of course getting advice here is like asking the Jiffy Lube guy to explain why your transmission is slipping.

Status: offline 		Upon reflection, this makes no sense to me. Since the Dom in question is hoping to 'create' a visual persona, there is unlikely to be a natural base from which to draw ideas. Since he has no preset traits he considers part of his...er...'Domliness', you are left with manufacturing a 'look' to make him appear to be dripping in it. Except...you're going to get a million answers here as to what one person thinks is visually more 'Domly'. If he has a partner...then (not just for the sake of being snippy, but genuinely applying this to the issue) who precisely is he trying to impress?

Find out what the target audience is (and saying "the general BDSM public" will get you nowhere in narrowing it down) and the work from there. The best direction you may actually get might be from his partner (whom you haven't referred to as a 'sub' from what I can see, so not sure if that's entirely applicable).

Status: offline 		Black and white....it's always a classic, and seems to have more punch these days than a color photo.
Unexpected backgrounds- saw a beautiful wedding photo recently where the bride was standing on the running board of an old rusty truck in the middle of someone's farm...the contrast of this beautifully dressed girl in such an unlikely place was striking. I am not suggesting posing him with a whip in front of the local retirement home, or church, but it doesn't have to be "expected"
If it's outside...take photos just at dawn or dusk..
Body parts...a forearm, with the hand resting on the back of a woman's head, or half of his body-waist to the floor...just see one leg in dark pants or jeans, thigh, belt... across his shoulder into a room .. 
I like them a little messy haired,  or a little less than perfect in some way.

You need to decide the priority here.  His commission, or your portfolio.  It's fruitless making any other decision or ideas otherwise and will lead to frustration.  The best advice I would give either way is do not do the shoot cold.  When taking a commission, you have to meet the person first to work out what the customer wants.  If your using a model, you have to meet one first or have an idea of their own portfolio at least before you would use them.

The One I currently use for My profile pic. My girl and I had wandered down to feed the ducks in a local park. I'd wandered out on an overhanging fallen tree to sit and feed them and it was simply a snap taken on her phone but it turned out really well.
