popeye1250 -> Men have problems when their wives make more money than them. (4/8/2009 5:43:52 PM)

I've read more than a few articles about most or a lot of men having a problem when their wives make substantially more than them.
I wonder why that is?
I can't see me having that problem but I've done my thing, I have a nice pension and I don't have anything to prove anymore.
Anyone in here know of anyone in your circle of friends where this is an issue?
Did it cause breakups? Divorces or other problems?
I can understand all that "macho" bullshit but I'd be proud of my wife if she made more than me!

Depends Popeye...if you figure she sucked her way to that salary...you might resent it just a wee little bit.

Rofl!!! That was such a misogynistic reply, Mike [:D] . Had you not written it, I would have dismissed its author as one of these hopeless men who long for the old days when wifey stayed home, put up, and shut the hell up :-) . Bad boy.

Kittin,I didn't mind her working...hell I didn't mind when the salary started going thru the roof....it was all those after hours functions that got to me.
High school grad,no college.....Vice-president of the soft dollar acquisitions(yeah she had her hand in that whole mess) for......CitiBank
Wall Street is a boy's club...woman who get ahead there ...usually give head.
Sorry if that's misogynistic...I call it has I see it...by the way ...she was too dumb to come in out of the rain without directions.
Sorry for the rant...thought about pulling it,decided what the fuck...I get to be an asshole once in a while.

Nope, I don't resent it all.  I've dated women that made more than me.  The majority of the women I date are more ambitious than me.  I'm a pretty simple guy; I don't want much.  I want to make enough to be comfortable, enough to not worry, and enough to save for later on down the road.  Women are catching up with us, and I'm totally cool with that.  Of course I'm a Gen-X'er and I am really attracted to dominant women obviously, so it's not in my nature to feel threatened.

Now see, I'd go the other way.
I'd be pushing her ass out the door telling her to make more!
"What? Two Hundred Grand a year!!!"  "You Piker!" "You can do better than that!" Go get some overtime!"
"Where's that Protestant work ethic?"
Daddy needs a new Cadillac, to go with his new Lincoln. And, the baby needs some new designer clothes, she has a date next week, I fixed her up with the baby down the street and I want her looking *good!*"
"Now get out there and make some Moo-Lah!"

[:D] That's pretty much how Master feels. I bring home just slightly more than He does and He doesn't mind at all. It's all His after all. With me working, it's like doubling (and then some) His salary. He's encouraging me in my quest for a Master's degree not only because He's proud of me and wants me to succeed but it's His "retirement plan," He says. He'll be 63 in October and He looks forward to having His pension as well as the fat check I'll be bringing home with the Master's level job I'll hopefully have by then. He makes the ultimate decisions on how the money is spent and He enjoys it. Why wouldn't He want me to make more so He can spend more?[;)]

~FR~

I know my dad didn't have a *problem* with it...

of course, he did like making more than my mother later  (I'm kinda weird about money, I don't know how I'd respond to a partner who makes tremendously more than me to be honest.)

littlewonder -> RE: Men have problems when their wives make more money than them. (4/8/2009 6:44:54 PM)

I grew up in an area where it was frowned upon for a woman to make more money than her husband so I've seen a lot of relationships sour after the children were grown and out of the house and the wife decided to go back to work and she still ended up making more money than her husband or she was wiser in the ways of saving her money.

It made the husbands insecure and paranoid. What is she saving her money for? Is she going to leave one day? What does she need me for if she can do it all on her own?

Men there like dependent women. Independence is a threat to their manhood.

Me personally...it makes no difference to me as long as we're both pulling our weight and being responsible adults.

No, you don't, because you're never an asshole, Mike.

Lockit -> RE: Men have problems when their wives make more money than them. (4/8/2009 7:01:33 PM)

I had a couple that had no problem with my making more... and one who had a major problem with it.  He liked the postion in the community it brought, but eventually he became insecure in other area's and then it was a major problem.  It wore us down and lead to a way of thinking for him that ended up breaking us up.  Of course now it is not a problem... no job and no man. lol

Where were you when I was young enough to chase beautiful woman?

I retired from at&t a little over a year ago after being there a little more than 33years. My average work week for most of those years was 50 to 55 hours. I would have LOVED it if my wife made more than I did. As it was, the only time I had a check with 40 hours on it was when I was on vacation..I left when I was worn out from the Wisconsin winters outside....

FangsNfeet -> RE: Men have problems when their wives make more money than them. (4/8/2009 7:16:57 PM)

My wife/sub makes more than me on the hourly pay rate. It's no problem here. We're both commited to having our bills paid, having planed events, and taking care of our um. All our dough goes in the same pot so I don't see what the big deal is.

As the Man/Dom, it's not like I have to be the one with the biggest pay. I cover the baisics and pet covers our recreations. For what we want and have, we both have to work. The more we make together, the better.

intenze -> RE: Men have problems when their wives make more money than them. (4/8/2009 7:38:28 PM)

My (now ex) husband and I had terrible issues with this. It didn't help that I was in management at the same company where he was a non-management person.  It ended badly.

You know it strikes me ,just from the limited sample represented here...health of the marriage would seem to be a hell of a lot more important than the bottom line on a W-2 form. When that health is absent...all sorts of heretofore small issues can become fissures upon which the whole thing cracks.

kittinSol -> RE: Men have problems when their wives make more money than them. (4/8/2009 7:56:11 PM)

I don't know how you did it. I simply could not work in the same place as my husband, let alone be in any kind of position of power with him (whether be his hierarchical superior or vice-versa). Brrrr...

Vendaval -> RE: Men have problems when their wives make more money than them. (4/8/2009 8:22:36 PM)

I have seen this scenario go either way.  Some men are so insecure that they become threatened.  Some men will stay at  home with the offspring.

TheHeretic -> RE: Men have problems when their wives make more money than them. (4/8/2009 8:56:35 PM)

We have gone back and forth on the income.  It's something of a joke.  At one point, she had been making a quarter an hour more than I was, and a cost-of-living put me up by 4 cents.  That $1.60 a week brought us a lot of laughs.

Yeah Ven, I wouldn't have a problem staying home with the offspring.
I'm retired and if I married a career woman I'd have the time to do it and I get along great with u/ms.
I'd be very proud of my wife for making a lot of money! It'd be a good partnership!
