when we bought ours, hubby told the salesperson to cancel the delivery/instillation fees and he would buy it. To my complete surprise, it worked!

hmmm.   Compelling.  I really dont like the idea of "rebates".   Jim bought a 20k kitchen from Lowes.  There was a $250 overcharge.  Supposedly the computer cant issue a credit- it can only be made good with a giftcard.   At that point- I personally would have cancelled the order.  But he did not.  The point is- as long as we the public allow these tactics,  the inch insideous into our life.

they need YOUR business...you do not need theirs. You, as the consumer, have the upper hand. Your money spends anywhere.

You are right.   It is silly how they cant answer a simple question. I brought the written estimate to Sears. Asked if they can beat the cost.  I got alot of extraneous numbers. But the final number was hard to get a tally.    Sears- tho has a sales staff.    All I want to do is wash clothes.  Basic. Not interested in fashion, high end razzle dazzle machines. How often would I even LOOK at the machine?    5 minutes a week?  SO I dont care if it is pretty- only that it WORKS.

As you say- in this economy- delivery should be thrown in.

Washer only as I hang clothes up to dry.

*adores* a guy who puts his clothes up to dry....never thought I would discover a man who is less lazy with his laundry then I am with mine as most of my tops recently shrank since I bought and started to use a washer-dryer and stopped putting my clothes on a line...well, over my doors to be precisely as I could never be bothered to carry them into my garden... to dry them...

There is no such thing as free delivery Pa....if you want cheap, reliable and somewhat a brand name....get a GE at your local Best Buy(chances are you don't need much more what you pay for are the extras and now the looks or colors) or equivalent unless you have a good local dealer who will meet the price then, go local!....Best Buys doesn't need more money but your local dealer probably does!

In a way, the local place- should get my business.   They pay tax into the town here for city services....   I did not know best buy sold washers.  We actually have one near by.

I find hanging clothes up to be relaxing. Something one does that calms the soul.   Mom figured out 4 kids early. Sure she "would" do my laundry- but if I wanted it timely- I learned to do it.  We had a basement laundry room maybe 12x15.  If an outfit got lost in it- you might never see it again!  (seriously)

I hang up clothes year round.   Even if it is inside.   I find that dryers wear out the clothes made out of cotton faster. I actually do own a dryer which came with the house.  But I don't use it!      In a pinch I suppose I would.   This might sound odd- but good hangers are a good thing. The fat plastic ones snap. They are also bulky.   Metal ones can rust and stain the clothes.   The wire coated ones- seem best.  If I hang them up on the shower rod- less weight- a heavier weight can collapse the rod.

I don't mind doing laundry.  Lugging it to and from the laundromat tho gets old.  Then there are trashy people at the laundromat, and you have no idea what was placed into the machines- particularly the large ones.

Funny- Jim gave me a huge oval wool rug.  It is outside, as I want to clean out the cigarette smoke.   Well- I took a hose to it.  Man- bulky. I hope I don't have to cut it.  When he had it shampooed the soap still in it I see.   I cleaned an oriental rug with a simply garden hose- and so I think it will work.

Here is what I recommend.   Purchase a new MayTag High Efficency washer and dryer.  You will love it.

You can also try freecycle.org  if feeling really adventurous.

Done!

yay!

I went with a Kenmore.   consumer reports had rated high.    Another machine might have been somewhat cheaper- but not if it doesnt last as long.  It is heaven to not have to go to the laundramatt!!!

$503.49.   Included hoses and haul away of old one.   Then there is a $65 rebate.  $438.49       I might have gotten one $80 cheaper- but- it is the same brand that I own that broke too soon.

Oh- the FSA grant covered it.  So now of the 2k I earned- I have to use up $1500 fast.  Likely to spend at lowes...ideally on project to save money on utility bills.    I almost went with a radiant barrier for the attic- but I think I need a ridge vent to do so.

Irishknight -> RE: Deciding a Wash machine ! ? (4/24/2009 12:12:15 PM)

Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and Amana washers and dryers are all made by the same company.  Maytag bought out Amana, Whirlpool bought out Maytag and both Whirlpool and Maytag had contracts with Kenmore.  We used to make the Kenmore fridges at the Iowa plant and they were actually the same as the other name brands we made.  Unless you buy an LG or a frigidaire you are getting the same product with cosmetic differences.

Yup, I have items that have lasted me well over 7 years, and I only am now not able to wear them any more because I got fatter and out grew them, and DAddy has sleep pants that he washed and dried a few times and in a month they looked   about 6 months old. They were faded and pilling and just generally looked wore out.

DesFIP -> RE: Deciding a Wash machine ! ? (4/24/2009 3:36:59 PM)

I'm using a GE bought used 22 years ago, still going strong. I'm on my second dryer and getting close to a third. But the local appliance repairman absolutely refuses to tell me it's time to toss the washer. Even though the store would make more selling me a new one. Oh and in all this time, the washer's been repaired twice.

Get it repaired. If it can't be repaired, or isn't worth it, they'll probably waive the service call if you buy your new machine from them. This assumes you can't fix it yourself. Google the problems you're having with it and you might find an easy fix.
