GotyouinitsSway -> I live with my uncle who didn't pay the phone bill... (3/29/2009 7:29:13 AM)

Sorry, I first posted this in the wrong area.   I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a proliferation of this scenario lately:

The number of scammers on this site has gone through the roof.  I notice that they are all seeking something 24/7 and somewhere between wild and extreme.  (Very few limits is a common phrase.)  They give out their YM right away-either in the profile or the first Email.  In the first conversation they tell you that they recently lost their master-he died or went back to his wife.  Then they tell you that they are living with their uncle and don't have a phone because they couldn't afford the bill.  Needless to say this is where I cut them off but I think it's pretty obvious that the next move is to ask for some money-ideally to relocate or maybe just to get the phone reconnected.  I've been on this site 5 years and  in the first 4 and 3/4 years, something like this would happen about once a year.  In the past 60 days, I get an Email from one or two a day.

Anyone that sends me a yahoo contact in the first email, gets no further. Neither do those that start telling me their kinks in the first email.

Unless I am feeling mean and want to toy with them for a few emails.

Yes, and they are all seriously anorexic too, because I guess most scammers don't know how to convert to pounds.

Oh.  Landline phone DID just go up in the last bill.

Who even needs a landline anymore? My parents' was costing 30 bucks a month. They've converted it to an old cell which, with exactly the same capabilities will only cost 10 a month! The landline was a glorified voicemail at this point, too.

I haven't had a landline in years.  My parents are in their mid 60's, and they still insist on having one.  I've tried to talk them into going completely wireless for years.  But it's not going to happen; my mother still comes over to get me to order her stuff online, and they have a computer.  [:D]  I've tried to sit her down and teach her to use the internet.  She's just not going to do it.  I actually envy her sometimes.  She doesn't care about further complicating her life.

"Deaf," "I'm taking take of my grandma in __________," "I've been training with Master X and now he's looking to place me," and "My previous Master died" are also common scams. They always have short or no profiles, are looking for every category of person, have handles that fit a small set of patterns (twonames, name plus number), and photos that do the same (a single picture, usually in front of a plant, passenger set of a car, in "soft focus," or a smiling bust shot--not uncommonly conflicting with the stated ethnic background). Some even put the yahoo right in the profile. They never view profiles before sending messages.

What's unfortunate is that these folks have come to significantly outnumber the genuine profiles, to the point where most of the profiles are scammers. Collarme obviously doesn't police this, so it's just going to continue.

I'm wondering if people actually fall for this. Since the scammers keep coming back, they must be gathering enough email addresses to make it worthwhile. But then, they have no cost but time.

GotyouinitsSway -> RE: I live with my uncle who didn't pay the phone bill... (3/29/2009 9:27:28 AM)

Yeah, so it's common.

The weight thing is another great tip off.  If some one says they weigh 48 pounds, they are thinking in kilos.  (That's about 105 pounds and most of the pictures of these girls are extremely thin so 48 KG makes sense.)

The use of deafness is a particularly insiduous one.   I mean imagine the poor person who really is deaf but when they put that in the profile they are sending scammer signals.

Yeah, I've noticed that too in the last month and always with e-mail addys to reply to.
I just report it to CM and delete the message.

My mom is close to getting interesting in the web.  She somehow doesnt want to use up/wear out her computer.  I told her is all outdates fast, to use it.

Being that there is a program called link up America.  Something to that effect.  It enables low income to have a phone - credits a portion back.  So- that is useful.  Also the landline never dies.
I dont know if one can have DSL with out phone line or cable line.

http://www.lifeline.gov/lifeline_Consumers.html   this is the program for low income.   I have no extras at all. and every call is billed.   --runs around $7 a month that way.

aravain -> RE: I live with my uncle who didn't pay the phone bill... (3/29/2009 12:47:26 PM)

Yeah... the only reason my parents *had* a land-line was for voicemail. They had the ringers turned off on all the phones!

For people who'd use it, that's great :)

voicemail thru the phone company is over priced.     I think the phoneline should have a prompt in it so as to ring the phone.  If the caller knows the code- the call rings. If not- oh well.   I am sick of computers calling me for Tina.     Once a house is in a data base to a phone number bill collectors think they have the right to hound the person who has that phone line.   Why should I pay $8 a month for caller ID?  The phone would still ring.   Calls for her- (she lost the place to forclosure years ago) are SPAM.   Even if I tell them there is no Tina here- they think I am lieing.

Thank you Lockit, how sweet. The worms, however, are food for my amphibs. They'll be happy they don't have to share. A local tree frog I found on my wood pile 5 years ago named Elvis, and fire bellied newt named (er, um, I hope you're sitting down) Sir Isaac Newton. Sir Isaac is 8 years old, which I figure must be like 159 in human years.

LOL... I had a thing for bright green tree frogs, but liked the big one's and toads too.  I still want some as pets.  Hell, I even had a couple toads as boyfriends... but I broke that habit!
