WASHINGTON – Congressional Republicans on Sunday predicted a doomsday scenario of crushing debt and eventual federal bankruptcy if President Barack Obama's massive spending blueprint wins passage.

Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, the top Republican on the banking committee, said Obama would have to scale back his budget, given a Congressional Budget Office report Friday that the president's budget would produce $9.3 trillion in deficits over the next decade — more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush's presidency.


Of course the CBO also predicted in 2000 that we would have budget surpluses through 2010.

Well, ANYONE should be concerned, but when the GOP comes up with a viable alternative, I'll take their bellyaching more seriously.  For now, I guess we're supposed to cut taxes, keep bailing out AIG, and live with a crumbling infrastructure & health-care system.

Oh, and no national energy policy other than "umm like drill."

Is this the same Shelby who criticized democratic earmarks  at length only to be found out that he sponsored more earmarks than anyone else?  Of course, Shelby said his earmarks were "good earmarks."

Is this the same Shelby that Pat Buchanan named a "Toyota Republican" having sold out his allegiance to Japanese car makers?

Is this the same Shelby who was investigated by a network who found most of his constituents just rolled their eyes at the mention of his name?

For a second I was worried.

"Toyota Republican"... well, that's a bit unfair. Toyota IS a major employer in his state, from what I understand. And at least Toyota had the brains to keep moving with the market demands instead of still cranking out the same gas guzzling, tired ass designs decade after decade.

If Buchannan hates him, I guess that's a plus in my book! :)

If Obama wanted to stop all the mess, all he had to do was veto all and any future spending plans, instead of signing and passing them through with a green flag. We fussed about George doing that, and now Obama has taken over the green flag waving.

How are we to know? Apparently it's making things worse by keeping up a spending plan with no money to really spend. Perhaps a no spending plan would actually.. I don't know.. Save money, since it isn't being spent?

paul - that idea was tried during the first Depression and caused it to drag on for years. might not help you but the stock market went up 500 points today and i'm Very pleased.

I actually disagree with the Obama spending plans.  But I have a helluva lot more credibility than the GOP because I opposed the insane Bush spending as well.

The idea of spending - good when our guy does it, bad when their guy does it  - is ridiculous.
