and we were on track to have the second largest budget surplus in US history on 9-10-01.  Then the next day something occurred that changed it.

GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed

WASHINGTON – Congressional Republicans on Sunday predicted a doomsday scenario of crushing debt and eventual federal bankruptcy if President Barack Obama's massive spending blueprint wins passage.

.........................................................

Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, the top Republican on the banking committee, said Obama would have to scale back his budget, given a Congressional Budget Office report Friday that the president's budget would produce $9.3 trillion in deficits over the next decade — more than four times the deficits of Republican George W. Bush's presidency.

Of course the CBO also predicted in 2000 that we would have budget surpluses through 2010.

drilling is an energy policy and also building nuclear power plants.  Iran uses such a policy and they don't have an oil problem  ;)

oh and its the democrats that want AIG bailed out....just follow the money ;)

Well, ANYONE should be concerned, but when the GOP comes up with a viable alternative, I'll take their bellyaching more seriously.  For now, I guess we're supposed to cut taxes, keep bailing out AIG, and live with a crumbling infrastructure & health-care system.

Oh, and no national energy policy other than "umm like drill."

MasterShake69 -> RE: GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed (3/28/2009 9:07:47 PM)

You might have missed all the times when Rush Limbaugh attacked Bush regarding Bushs spending programs.
The problem was that no congressional republicans had the balls to lead a rebellion against bushs spending like Newt did to Bush's fathers tax raising.

I actually disagree with the Obama spending plans.  But I have a helluva lot more credibility than the GOP because I opposed the insane Bush spending as well.

The idea of spending - good when our guy does it, bad when their guy does it  - is ridiculous.

housesub4you -> RE: GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed (3/28/2009 9:37:08 PM)

Hmmm.... I remember Bush on TV saying the banks and such needed aid and wanted a blank check to fix the problem']]

McCain stopped running for President so he could work on getting the bailout thru...Huh, and no one in the GOP remembers any of that,  it was all the Dems and Obama, even though he had not been elected yet

NewOCDaddy -> RE: GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed (3/28/2009 10:45:43 PM)

What you apparently dont remember is that it was a Democrat bill that the GOP voted against, after not being allowed to make amendments before the vote. It took a huge drop in the market (surprise surprise surprise) to get enough GOP votes to switch so the Dems could call it a "bi partisan" bill.

awmslave -> RE: GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed (3/29/2009 12:06:24 AM)

To put partisan nonsense aside, Republicans have a valid point. If I would be in financial trouble and somebody would tell me I need to boost up my spending the only way I would follow the advise would be if I knew for sure doomsday is coming.

Raiikun -> RE: GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed (3/29/2009 1:07:35 AM)

Heh, yah...

The Republicans have a pretty poor record as far as doing the same thing, but the situation right now seems ludicrous...we apparently have a government that thinks it can inflate us out of a recession and borrow it's way out of debt.

Republican economic idealogy has been a vacuous attempt to suggest that those who are consuming (creating) all the demand they were going to...needed a tax 'revenue' cut in order to spur more 'investment' ? How ? This has been since Reagan 1981 budget.

Funny how the workers in the US had the best standard of living in the 50's when the top rate was around 70% and the working poor paid little if anything and inflation was consistently low.

Republican economic idealogy (NOT conservative) has been for 50 years...that the rich don't work harder because they aren't paid enough and the poor don't work because they are paid too much.

Funny that real GDP growth was higher in the 60s than in the 50s, with the strong years immediately following the Kennedy tax cuts and before the spending got out of hand. Funny that the US still has the best standard of living in the world and that with about a 1 1/2 year lag the strongest growth is after tax cuts.

This just in: The GOP (responsible for the mess we're in) stands ready to blame the new guy. Stay tuned for ethics lessons on being accountable for your own actions at 11:00!

"Toyota Republican"... well, that's a bit unfair. Toyota IS a major employer in his state, from what I understand. And at least Toyota had the brains to keep moving with the market demands instead of still cranking out the same gas guzzling, tired ass designs decade after decade.

If Buchannan hates him, I guess that's a plus in my book! :)
Didn't Toyota just ask the Japanese Gov. for bailout money of their own?

How are we to know? Apparently it's making things worse by keeping up a spending plan with no money to really spend. Perhaps a no spending plan would actually.. I don't know.. Save money, since it isn't being spent?
ROFLMAO....This just in Obama decides to lay off Federal Government.Nations largest ever mass layoffs,President Obama say's "we have no money to spend, therefore we are closing the gov't ,we shall seek bankruptcy protection.....restructure and hope to see you all again in 6 mo's. or a year."

Sounds like a well thought out plan.

Yes. And the Japanese economy has suffered since the early 90s thanks to policies that Blowbama is intent on duplicating.

slvemike4u -> RE: GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed (3/29/2009 1:28:35 PM)

Do you really believe the lessons of Japan's "lost decade" are being totally ignored?
BTW Japan had rebounded somewhat from the 90's doldrums....this Toyota request is in response to the current world wide recession. The car market as a whole, not just Detroit,is hurting.

Actually, it is generally agreed among economists (who do much better in hindsight than foresight) that the "lost decade" of the Japanese economy was due to their government not taking aggressive, early action and hanging back to let the economy straighten itself out on it's own.

Let's try to keep some facts mixed in with our opinion.

What do you mean "believe it"? The bailouts and budget are virtually identical to Japanese fiscal/monetary policy. No need to "believe" anything, they are there in black and white.

slvemike4u -> RE: GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed (3/29/2009 1:38:15 PM)

As evidenced every day right here on these very pages...even black and white is open to interpretation.Indeed it is often done along partisan lines...heh.

Policies are policies, no interpretation involved. You may want to read something into the intent of the policies but that has nothing to do what the failed policies are. I could post side by sides of the policies mixing up which is Obama's and which is Japan's and you couldnt tell the difference.

slvemike4u -> RE: GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed (3/29/2009 1:44:45 PM)

Yes, the Bush tax cuts occurred that used the surplus to thank his wealthy friends for their support.

Since there was no real "surplus" after the Clinton recession and 9/11 and since, as always after a tax rate cut, tax revenues increased and the proportion of taxes paid by the "wealthy" increased, your statement has no basis in fact.
