demetriusar -> Getting an MBA, your thoughts? (3/21/2009 2:53:34 PM)

Does anyone out there have an MBA? I'm considering it and want to hear anyone and everyones thoughts.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Getting an MBA, your thoughts? (3/21/2009 3:01:18 PM)

First of all, welcome to the forums.

Second, what would be your reason? Better employment opportunities, laid off now and want to make good use of your time, change of career, just for the hell of it - tell us a little bit about your situation. What's your field? I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding people willing to share their thoughts!

Take a look at the market and the area you want to work in, there are MBA'ers and lifers walking the street--its no guarantee of a job or job stability-so if you want to do it to find the material interesting, great, but right now, it won't give you a leg up on job security.

Build an MIS thingey to help you decide that is my advice.[8|]

intenze -> RE: Getting an MBA, your thoughts? (3/21/2009 3:16:11 PM)

Have one and it was not that easy.  You need to go to a very good school for it to be of value, and that costs big bucks.  The return on your investment will be low unless you have a job already and it advances you in that career.  If you just want to get one, and have no potential promotion to come out of it, I would suggest you put the money you were going to spend on school in low risk investments.

Whats an "MIS thingey"?

Management Information System.

Twenty years ago I would have said great but with this "global economy" I'd have to say no.

Voluptuoushussy -> RE: Getting an MBA, your thoughts? (3/21/2009 5:16:30 PM)

I thought about that..I'm in the healthcare business...and it would work well with healthcare administration..but I decided I didn't want to be the one that said yay or nay on someones "could be or couldn't be" surgery..so instead i'm going on for my PA.

An MBA with an emphasis on healthcare will net you profits, if that is something you are looking for.

Yeah, no kidding. I don't shy away from authority or having to make difficult decisions, but damn - that's one I have to say I'd rather leave to someone else.

Welcome to the forums to you, too. Good luck with that PA!

FR

First of all I have to agree with the popster here except under certain conditions.

Do you have a true interest in the field ? This means not for gain.

If so, you have probably been following the changes that have happened and might have an idea what is going to happen.

If so have you been doing any significant self study on the subject ?

If so do you conclude that in the years it will take to get the degree, that your skills will be in demand ?

If your answer is yes to those three questions, and you can afford it, it might be for you. Also note that IMO any good school should have you ready and during the last half or so of the last year should be concentrating on the latest changes in law and practices in commerce. You don't need obsolete information, and just how the winds are going to blow is unknown. It is not quite the same as studying math or science.

I said what I said, take a grain of salt, stick my words in your cap and call it macaroni, but consider this carefully. This takes time and money, and if you have that already, a few good investements might be wiser. Fortunes are made during times like this, and I think you would know that. Self study before the classroom can give you a bit of an edge, but also you can consider this your first test.

Will this be cost effective ?

OK, that is answering yes to four questions. Shit happens. Now that I mention that, it is something to consider. In the near future we may see caps of some sort, or punitive taxes on bonuses given to MBAs. Something else to consider.

I don't have an MBA but in this day and age being what it is I would think that anyone with a high degree is better than someone who doesn't have any at all...at least from my experience of not having any at all and finding it difficult to find a better paying job without one.

popeye1250 -> RE: Getting an MBA, your thoughts? (3/21/2009 10:36:06 PM)

The problem is that India can graduate MBA's by the hundreds of thousands.
We can only guess at what China can do, millions?
Always remember that in this global economy it will always be "a race to the bottom."
Why pay an MBA from the U.S. $100k when you can get 3 1/3  MBA's from India for the same price?
And that goes for lawyers and doctors too.

but it really comes down to look in the mirror and ask the question and the one looking back will give u the answer

Do what you feel you want to do...but remember:

Come the Revolution, it is politicians, lawyers and MBAs against the wall first....

The person in the mirror is left handed and I don't trust left handed people[8|]

I would agree with ThatDamnedPanda in the second entry.  A number of considerations.  However, no matter what I would learn as much about computers as you can since business schools seem to stress  computer expertise.

variation30 -> RE: Getting an MBA, your thoughts? (3/22/2009 10:58:19 AM)

a good friend of mine was in the process of getting an mba when Procter & Gamble offered him a three year contract that pays him more than enough to live in downtown London by himself at age 24. don't know if he's going to finish business school or not.

corysub -> RE: Getting an MBA, your thoughts? (3/22/2009 1:12:22 PM)

If you don't have a reason at this juncture to go for an MBA you have no reason to go for an MBA.

pahunkboy -> RE: Getting an MBA, your thoughts? (3/23/2009 5:47:40 AM)

MBA?     NO!

You dont need debt.

Pick a trade, get real job skills.   REAL goods, necessities in particular are a good pick.

The world of paper is over.   Pushing paper...OVER.    Make real stuff, that can be consumed.   Farming will make a comeback.

Paper pushers are out the door.
