I flew from Lubbock to Boston back in 2002 and when I went threw security I had four mercury thermometers and they set the metal detector off.  I had to stop and empty everything out of pockets and my carry on as they searched for the culprit. Lubbocks metal detectors are extremely sensitive.

Mercury is Heavy Metal as well and in small amounts will set off all Three Types on Metal Detectors.

Mercury Reacts differently to the Fields generated and conducts better because it is a Heavy Metal.

I am not surprized I would assume that even One owuld set it off.

I'm going on a trip this week and am wondering if anyone has had their piercings pose a problem at the airport security check. I have had mine set off alarms at a courthouse...but I have been through many other check points with them and never had an issue. So....anyone????

My piercings have never set off an airport alarm and I travel pretty extensively through a variety of different airports. If it's something which is of great concern, you can remove them and run string through the holes so they don't close up while you travel.

Celeste

Please Don't Put a string through the piercing. all in all its just not a good idea.
most high quality stainless steels will not set off the detector. occasionally they do if the machine's sensitivity is set to high.
if that is a major concern there is always Titanium Acrylic and a few other materials that will not show up under a detector(though most stainless won't so don't worry about it)

Zippers and buttons and watches and even regular Earings(can often be a poor quality metal depending on where you get it)

String is not a good idea. it is possible to drag germs and bacteria into the piercing string can be quite abrasive to such a sensitive spot causeing a possible infection. (and this is assuming the piercing is relativly healed)

In fact if you are ever interested in looking up something fun: go to www.BMEzine.com and look up Permanent piercings. its basically a Piercing with a Chain inserted so that skin grows around/through it. similar concept though with the string if the hole closes around it..not permenant but major irritation when removing it.

Cheers
Skully

Steel, while i do appreciate your opinion, i set off the detectors here in jacksonville about 5 years ago.  i was wearing sweatpants, a tshirt, a sports bra, panties, and moccasins.  the only jewelry i was wearing was my rings (all gold) and my nipple piercings (at the time, curved barbells).

the buzzer went off as i passed through the arch, and again as i was wanded.  when the woman who was doing the wanding asked "underwire?" i said no, piercings.  she had to pass the back of her hand over each breast to make sure there wasnt anything more there than that little bit of metal.

i've since been though security there twice more, and the TSA person i talked to said that no, they'd had to reduce the sensitivity on the equipment because of that issue.

i went through houston intercontinental a couple of weeks back with fresh piercings, underwire bra, and a belt with a large metal buckle and it didnt set anything off.

i'm certain that some places just have their stuff set too sensitive.  and lubbuck?  yeah i have relatives there.  if anyone like them is running the TSA there, no wonder things like this happen.

I've got 17 and it's never been a problem for me. New Rocks, on the other hand, can be a pain in the arse to get through an airport.

i have piecings, have flown over the world, never have they set any alarm off. They are either surgical steel, titanium or silver as a bit of info as to what does not set them off.

yep,  same here.

Oh yes I remember I was wearing my Grandfather's army belt low slung round my hips and I set off all the alarms at Vnukovo airport but that was before Glasnost, or my tongue piercing.

I have both nipples pierced, I have set off the metal detectors at all security checks I have been through, whether it be a court house or the airport.  I generally just tell the person waving the wand over me I have my nipples pierced and ask them if they want to see them.
I have yet to have anyone say yes.

You may want to make sure your nipple rings are Surgical Steel or Stainless because I contacted the Airports and in the event that a metal detector would pick up that it would pick up ANY metal Period in order for it to pick up Surgical or Stainless it needs to be at the MAXIMUM Level of sensitivity and would pick up any metal.

If you are curious call up your local airport and ask to speak with a TSA supervisor that is what I did and I was given a LOT of information.

If you have had the sensor go off and the only metal you had on you was a nipple ring or two or even 4 then chances are they wer doing random pat downs and maybe they just liked your boobs.

THINK PEOPLE If EARINGS don't set off the Sensor who would nipple or clitorial rings??? we all watch women with earings go through the sensor all the time and nothing goes off.

Seriously CALL THE TSA and ask. I did.

i guess it depends how many you have.. i have never had problems myself & neither have any of my more heavily pierced friends that i am aware of.

What IS funny is when they use the little hand held detectors and they squeak around my nawty bits

I maxed out at forty-one piercings, and never set off airport metal detectors or those at work.  It was a bit disappointing the first time I flew; I was looking forward to a strip search.

Stainless steel and titanium, at least when distributed around the body in little 14g bits, have little effect on magnetometers.

I have never had issues per se, but I have set off alarms. Security was patient and cooperative with me; I did not mind the searches ( I have quite  a few piercings over my body  )

**forum from the land of the dead here**
Ok Some people say they have their piercings set off court house detectors well I had my keys around my neck under my coat and there were two sets of house keys and the detectors didn't pick it up at all. Now when i wear my belt with the gromets in it I always have to show them that its my belt. oh well those things are goofy.

I have a titanium plate and 32 screws in my face, I dont set off the metal detectors at the airport. I did however accidentily walk right onto an airplane with my pocket knife. It was kind of funny because my knife is one of the huskys you can get at home depot that holds a razor blade. I threw it in the basket with my keys and loose change, had to throw away my soda I was carrying, and take my shoes off, but they actually let me through with the knife, didnt say one thing to me about it.

Personally I think they should flat out let you carry a concealed gun on the plane. After 9/11, show me  1 terrorist who is going to willfully get into a aircraft cabin full of americans with guns! Then it really wouldnt matter now would it!

I think it would also make an aircraft cabin a very polite place to be, because you wouldnt know who was packing, and who wasnt. That is why they say an armed scociety is a polite scociety.

Well, with the recent incident of the specially trained (theoretcially) pilot loosing off a shot in the cockpit, I'm not sure more guns on board would make me feel safer.

In fact, I've been on a flight or two when I've been damn glad that the over-served drunks on board were armed with little more than a stir stick!
