I'm going on a trip this week and am wondering if anyone has had their piercings pose a problem at the airport security check. I have had mine set off alarms at a courthouse...but I have been through many other check points with them and never had an issue. So....anyone????

Never had any stories of problems, just a bit of extra time with a pat down.

Yes allow a tad of extra time---and I refuse to remove anything, I vowed not to change My life for terrorists!

A friend of mine had issues, but she also had 34 piercings that were concealed by bikini panties. They wanted her to remove them, and she managed to convince them that was not very practical and she would be happy to "show" exactly what was setting them off.

I know! I was talking with her partner one night and he mentioned she had 34 piercings. What? No way. He called her over and naturally I had to interrogate her and eventually she took me to the bathroom to show them. I anticipated it would be overkill and kinda creepy looking -- but it was actually quite artistic and nice. Cool pattern. And that was how we met. :)

She did have to take them out for sugery a few months ago and ended up "losing" four of the and was going to have to re-pierce.

I have quite a few piercings, some which are visible and some which are not. I too refuse to remove any of them. I have yet though to set off any of the alarms at airports. I have though, set them off in courthouses and hospitals.

Never been a problem when I've gone flying.

i have piecings, have flown over the world, never have they set any alarm off. They are either surgical steel, titanium or silver as a bit of info as to what does not set them off.

what did used to set the alarms off, was a particular chain, that was copper, covered in silver. did it everytime without fail.

Id like to think i was strong enough to be 'noway am i taking these off,'
but know that when push comes to shove, id remove, rather than miss seeing my children at the end of the journey. Nothing, comes higher, so i would remove gladly due to the reward.
I lived through sectarianism, bomb scares and searches a regular thing. People killed regularly. You get to accept security then, and be grateful for it.
I have learned to take up a stance, only when its worth the effort.

My piercings have never set off an airport alarm and I travel pretty extensively through a variety of different airports. If it's something which is of great concern, you can remove them and run string through the holes so they don't close up while you travel.

Lol....not a great concern as I am FAR from shy...if they need to see them I have no problem showing them to them. I was just wondering if it was going to cause delays. Thanks for all the info everyone.

Yes it can cause delays.. I almost missed one flight (because of long slow lines and security checks) when they went looking in the carry on (for non vanilla items). I don't have any piercings, but my bracelets usually set off as I walk through, so I take them off before going through.
I would simply allot more time to do a show and tell if they want to see, and that should be fine. M

Well, I flew to Vancouver and back in August and did not set off any alarms. No strip search for me.

I have 39 piercings, all of them stainless except for three in titanium. I've been going through airport-style metal detectors at work every day for a couple of years now without alarming them either.

my experience it that is depends on the airport and the day. traveling through the same airport at differnt times - sometimes yes, sometimes no. if you e-ticket, it makes all of the line waiting much shorter. just print your boarding pass before you go to the airport and breeze right through to the final check point.

happy and safe travel -

Maybe it's just be but does it strike anyone else as some what interesting, that from above statements most Court Houses and Hospitals have better (or more sensitive) metal detectors then airports? One would think it should be the other way around. Having traveled a lot in Europe back and forth to the US and now in Asia, I find US airport security to be a joke and extremely time consuming. In Germany and Italy my necklace sets them off and it has about a dimes worth of metal, however in the US I have passed through with a Leatherman pocket tool that I had forgoten in a cargo pocket.

Anyways back to the topic, I think you should be fine, and in the event they do set it off you'll just get a pat down from a member of the same sex.

TSA to change procedures for passengers with body piercings
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES - The U.S. Transportation Security Administration says it will change they way its officers search passengers with body piercings after a woman complained she was forced to remove a nipple ring with pliers in order to board an airplane.

Mandi Hamlin, 37, had demanded an apology and her Los Angeles-based attorney sent a letter to the TSA this week requesting a civil rights investigation.
Hamlin said she was trying to board a flight from Lubbock to Dallas on Feb. 24 when she was scanned by a TSA agent after passing through a larger metal detector without problems.
Hamlin said she told the woman she was wearing nipple piercings, and the agent then called over her male colleagues, one of whom said she would have to remove the jewelry.
Hamlin said she could not remove them and asked whether she could instead display her pierced breasts in private to the female agent. She said several other male officers told her she could not board her flight until the jewelry was out.

I find this ODD.

I was the Captain of a Secuity and Personal Protection Firm from 1998 to 2002 so somewhat recent.

We used Metal Dectors bit handheld and walk through.

Piercings just DON'T set them off.  Neither do Plates in your Head, or Screws and Pins and Bars from Bone reconstruction.

Stainless Steel needs to be in Quantites where the Reactive Mass is Greater than that of 4 ounces of Steel.  So Steel Toed Boots set them off but Piercings never did.

I am not saying someone is lying, but even with the girl and the TSA when asked if she had any Metal on her she VOLUNTERRED that she had her Nipple Pierced and that was what even brought them up (I read the ORIGINAL Report not the one posted above)

Piercings just don't have a great enough Mass to be detected by what a Security Check points wand or a walk through gate is supposed to catch.

In Example If the wand is set up to catch a piercing it is also sensitive enough to pick up your Pants Ziper, The Fastener of a Bra, it;s Underwire, and any other Metalic object.

If your piercing did set it off you may want to have it removed becuse it my be a Ferious Metal which can POison you as Metal Detectors pick these up best.

Apparently though it is possible with EXTREME Guages although many claim to have set them off the process they said they went though is usually not what TSA is Required by Law to do and so I ususally just write them off as liars.

HERE IS A ARTICLE FROM ABOUT.COM ABOUT PIERCINGS AND METAL DETECTORS.

Do Metal Detectors really go off from Piercings?

I get asked this question a lot – usually by those who don’t want their piercing(s) to be discovered. If you’re going to an airport, sporting event or anywhere else that a metal detector is involved, you might wonder if you’re going to end up setting off bells and whistles.

It’s helpful, first, to understand How Metal Detectors Work, and the reasons they are used for security purposes. Basically, a metal detector emits an electro-magnetic field that flows until it comes across something metallic. The metal object disrupts this flow in different ways, depending on its size and the type of metal. The metal detector is designed to give an audible signal when the field is disturbed.

Security metal detectors are used to look for dangerous objects – knives, guns, explosives, etc. Adjustments can be made to the metal detector to determine how sensitive it is based on the level of security needed. If necessary, a metal detector could be set to detect a very small amount of metal.

The problem with setting metal detectors to be over-sensitive is that it causes too many false alarms. Security areas at large public events would be completely congested with people setting off the alarms with keys, jewelry, pens, etc. It would make the job of actually finding dangerous objects nearly impossible. Therefore, metal detector sensitivity is usually not set that high.

My most recent trip through airport security (September, 2006) which was extremely tight with its new rules about liquids and how many personal items you could carry on, my 8 piercings didn't cause any issues walking through the metal detector. Neither did my underwire bra. But the penny I failed to remove from my pocket was caught by both the walk-through and the wand. The wand also reacted to the metal buttons on my jeans, but not my piercings.

In general, a few piercings usually does not pose a threat of setting off an alarm. However, with today’s heightened security, it is always a possibility. The risk increases with the more piercings you have or the larger gauge jewelry you wear in them.
If you really don’t want to have to explain your piercing(s), your best option would probably be to remove the jewelry before you get there.*

*If your piercing is new (less than 6 months) it is really not recommended that you remove your jewelry unless absolutely necessary. Even a healed piercing can close up quickly and make replacing the jewelry difficult and painful. Since your chances of setting off the metal detector are very slim, it might be best to just risk it. However, if setting off an alarm could cause serious problems for whatever reason, and removing the jewelry is your only option, please let a professional help you put them back in.
