Dern it...why couldn't this Obama speech thingy be on tomorrow.  American Idol is not on tonight because of the democrat gig!   You don't think Barack is gonna sing..do ya?

Bite your tongue!  Lost is on tomorrow!

When I've caught someone (especially a politician) bullshitting me, I don't hang on their every word after that.

But by all means, kiss the ground in front of his feet if that's what does it for you. Only thing I ask is, pardon me while I refuse to.

For his speeches, Nyquil and bourbon were mandatory...

Snappy, the best single resource for speeches I know of is here,  http://www.americanrhetoric.com/ .  You'll find the released text for tonight pretty easily with a quick Google, but I like to get the authenticated text of what was actually said.

Only when you post it on every other thread.

Really?

And you were able to tell this how?

By looking into his eyes?

You can't imagine that?  Mike, do you remember being a kid?  Remember when the POTUS would fuck up your shows?  You're older than me, but I remember having mucho contempt for Reagan for taking over the A-Team, Night Rider, The Dukes of Hazzard, V (remember that series?), BJ McKay and his best friend Bear, etc.

I don't generally give a flying fuck what the POTUS says.  It's usually horse manure.  I want them to leave me alone.  I want them to talk about costing me less.

Sanity -> RE: Obama about to speak (2/24/2009 9:27:23 PM)

No, *I* don't pretend that I can read someone's mind across time and space by looking at their eyes in an old video of them.

I say that because Bush always followed up his spoken word with real actions. Like him or not, agree with him or not, the guy was sincere.

Not like Barack, as exemplified by this link that you so hate to see.

I watched it.  Since I've been alternating shots of Nyquil with shots of bourbon every couple of hours all day, not much really registered.  I'll read an authenticated text when a good opportunity presents itself.

Bourbon and Nyquil? Then you probably missed the part where he urged all Americans to PM their social security numbers and credit card numbers to ThatDamnedPanda on CollarMe.com. He said that was the most important part of the entire speech.

Honest. You can trust me on this.

Edit: and he also said to be sure and include the 3-digit security code on the back of the credit cards. He was quite specific about this. I swear.

It's the first one I've ever missed, but I'm on vacation 3 time zones west of the speech so it was late afternoon for me. Wasn't going to abandon the beach to go back to my hotel and watch TV. I figure I'll just have to catch the analysis in tomorrow's paper.

If listening to an American President adressing Congress can be construed as hanging"on every word"...well yanno different strokes for different folks.Pardon me while I pay attention....thanks for playing.

Sanity -> RE: Obama about to speak (2/24/2009 9:49:59 PM)

While he's lying to the people, and to Congress.

I think that behind closed doors, Obama's probably real. But when he's up there giving speeches, he's that infamous cult of personality.

He's just playing a part, with nothing real about him at all.

DominantDamsel -> RE: Obama about to speak (2/24/2009 10:17:00 PM)

I enjoyed President Obama's speech tonight. I think it was one of his better ones. I saw nothing sinister or overtly bad in the speech or the promises. I think he needs to give the country hope and he did so. He appears to be determined to make headway in clean energy, health care, and education. How can anyone disagree with these goals? It all sounds good. So does the reduction of the deficit by half by the end of his term.

The one good thing about this is if he doesn't give this his best, he'll look like a liar and won't get a second term. I think he just may be able to pull it off, and that's good for Americans. I may be conservative but I sense when someone's being sincere and I got the feeling tonight that Obama is sincere. He gave me hope, though I'm still staying on my guard with this economy the way it is. I still think we're in for a rough ride.

Governor Bobby Jindal sucked. He was absolutely contrived and forced with that phony looking smile! The Republicans are going to have to look elsewhere for good leadership, I'm afraid. He cannot come close to competing with President Obama. Next!

TNstepsout -> RE: Obama about to speak (2/25/2009 3:06:38 AM)

I thought it was a great speech. I just got annoyed that Nancy Pelosi kept jumping up to clap at every third sentence. I was actually yelling at the TV- "Oh for God's sake, would you sit the FUCK down!"

Really? Like when he told us that he knew for a fact that Iraq possessed huge stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction? Or when he said that we would be in and out of the Iraq war in three months tops? How about when he told us that we our troops were going to be hailed as liberators by the Iraqi people and flowers were going to be strewn at their feet? Maybe you mean he meant it when he stood on the deck of an aircraft carrier and told us, with brimming sincerity, "Mission Accomplished.".

Where has sincerity like that gone?

Roselaure -> RE: Obama about to speak (2/25/2009 3:51:36 AM)

I listened to the whole thing.  Obama was impressive as usual, which is what I expect.  I was very interested to see how Gov Jindal presented himself.  As a Democrat and a proud liberal, I'm gleeful to see the Republican party moving even further right, move right on over there towards the margins, don't learn from the past mistakes of your party or the other party.
As for Jindal personally, he may have the makings of a standard bearer, he has a friendly demeanor and adecent speaking voice.  He does need to stop addressing the public like he's reading to second graders though.  And he'll have to get another issue other than hurricane Katrina.

Now THERE is a politician I don't trust!

I thought the speech was excellent, but as others have said, I don't expect otherwise.

The time for just pretty words, is over. As grandma used to say....."the proof is in the pudding". Show us Mr. President.

Now that is an enlightened view. As for me, I listened to every word that Obama said. And THEN I sat and listened to every word the LA Governor said in rebuttal. As a result, I now am able to form an intelligent opinion on what was said. On the other hand, those who did not listen to his speech nor the rebuttal has nothing to bring to the table but foolish soundbites to support what they wanted to believe of the event before it began.

I hope they had something good on Cartoon Network to keep you occupied.

So let me understand what motivates you. You listen to speeches...,  I'm sure your read a lot of commentary from say, the New York Times, and probably take notes when Keith Olbermann is blustering about ...whatever Keith wants to bluster about.  And all of this "brilliance" that you absorb...all of these fantastic ideas that warm your heart, all of the "study" of the issues that you obviously must spend a great deal of the precious time all of us every day have less and less of in the hourglass of our lives, ...and All YOUcan come up with is...

"I hope that had something good on Cartoon Network to keep you occupied"

Such an old and very common liberal rhetorical trick.."if someone has better ideas than you, attack that person since you can't win by attacking his ideas".  What professor taught you that theory...very clever person, indeed, and  Argumentum Ad Hominemin would be in the top ten amendments to any  "Liberal Rhetorical Constitution".

That's the best punch you can throw...hitting below the belt where it's "personal" instead of teaching us all you "Learned" from the words that Obama so elequently delievered last night??  You do this all the time.  I bring up the fact that Bill Clinton got a blow job in the Oval Office and spilled his seed on the rug, and a blue dress, and you don't come back to banter about the political points of view I express I have, and (I have no quarrel with disagreement, thats how we all learn) but about my reference to a pervert having a young intern on her knees. Cute, and maybe rings through to some people. Others bring up my favorite quote "full of sound and fury" when describing irrational liberal thought..same old, same old.

So please tell us..and I listetened to both speeches as well..

I learned that Obama is going to attack every small businessman working his tail off, giving employment to most of the people working in the United States, and his/her tax rate is going up...why...because he was successful.
The democrat party definition of "rich" has always been based on annual income. My view is that Warren Buffet is kinda rich but he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary!
Old Warren payed 17.7% on $46 million of annual income (boy would I love that tax rate..while his $60,000 a year secretary paid 30%.  Please, Sir, what is wrong with this picture?
Now my idea would be to really "tax wealth"..Pick a number..lets have tax legislation that taxes all income, no matter what the source, about say...$2,000,000 to be generous..at 90%...a number 4 times what Barney Frank feels is a "living wage" for bankers. You do know that at one time we had a graduated tax rate on short term gains of 90% and the country did not fall apart.  I wonder what those Kennedy's who fight so hard for the "little people" would feel about that sort of tax on their grandfathers prohibition earnings in their trust accounts?  Just wondering.

I learned last night that 85% of the people who have healthcare are now going to be subjected to some "change" in their healthcare.  What is that change..shrugs....who knows..everything is a moving target with this administration of "words"...but, somehow, if you give the 15% that don't have a healthcare program, it's my guess that someone else has to pay for it.  Who, you might ask..or maybe you won't ask...but I'll answer anyway, ME...and YOU...and everyone here who works for a living  Certainly not Warren Buffet..he's locked in at 18% taxes..

I learned last night that everyone from birth to death is gonna get a quality education.  I guess he is going to fire all the people in the bloated  Department of Education, the State Departments of Education...and those bureacrats who never step into a classroom but just issue edicts and curriculum down to some underpaid teacher working her ass off to try to educate the spoiled kids of spoiled parents. After Obama fires all those people, I guess he is going to kidnap the people running the Japanese and Chinese educational system.   Paraticularly the Chinese who are not only graduating millions students with majors that actually make a contribution to the country..but also have a good handle on how to control their minds to go along with the party bosses.

I learned last night that "nobody messes with Joe"..  Huh?

I learned last night that Obama is going to bankrupt any company that has a chimney coming from its plant..generating plant, machine tool plant, auto plant, a greenhouse with plants...since he is asking for legislation to TAX carbon emissions.  But that was only a one liner and it probably went over a lot of heads  We keep seeing the "Dear Leader" in commercials talking about clean coal...and nothing about the fact that he would rather see the utilities go bankrupt should they build a new generating plant.  By the way, what kind of plant is going to back up those thousands of windmills?  You do know that they require back up generators since the wind is not a constant...or do you?

By the way, I thought Nancy looked great sitting there...she was SO excited thinking about those sweet dollars coming her husbands way with new ports and trains and tunnels all leading to their property. I could swear I saw a stain on the back of her dress when she turned around...but I could be wrong.  You do know that this woman of the people is one of the top ten richest in the House..but that's kinda irrelevant...we all know her heart is in the right place.

I'll stop here...Barney is on and it's my favorite cartoon... See ya!

Oh he was sincere alright. He MEANT it. Just like Sanity said. And he apologized for that anyway.  I think he said "oops, my bad".
