Last week, the CIS reported, "An estimated 6 to 7 million illegal immigrants are currently holding jobs. Prior research indicates they are overwhelmingly employed in lower-skilled and lower-paying jobs."  [Unemployment for Immigrants and the US-Born: Picture Bleak for Less-Educated Black & Hispanic Americans By Steven A. Camarota, February 2009]

Exactly what sort of jobs?

"Illegals are primarily employed in construction, building cleaning and maintenance, food preparation, service and processing, transportation and moving occupations and agriculture."

With the exception of agriculture, a majority of the workers in these occupations are native-born Americans. Thus, illegal aliens are taking jobs Americans are not only willing to do, but are doing, and taking 7 million of these jobs from young Americans now out of work.

By failing to enforce U.S. immigration laws, the government of the United States is selling America's working class down the river.

In addition to the 7 million illegals holding jobs, legal immigrants have another 15 million. In 2008, when Americans lost 3.5 million jobs, 144,000 immigrants were admitted every month.

Why do we have an open-borders immigration policy that annually allows in millions, legal and illegal, to compete for jobs, when 10 million Americans are out of work and half a million are losing their jobs every month? The political correctness and moral cowardice of our Lords Temporal, who refuse to call a time-out on immigration until our own people go back to work, is killing the American dream for millions.

I didn't know he could "choose" which laws to enforce.
How's about Mr Holder enforce *ALL* the laws like Kittin said last year?

Immigration creates jobs. US economy is so called "consumer based": Americans have everything, immigrants need everything. Illegals problem will be solved soon. It is called "comprehensive immigration bill" what will surface this year for sure in the same form as it was proposed a year ago and passing it poses no problem this time.

But what about all of the social services illegals take away? I see it every day at work - illegals having babies because they know their child will be considered an American citizen and it's less likely they will get kicked out if they are the parent of an "American". Then there are those with babies already and they are on social assistance. That's just a fraction of it. I think a good start would be to create a law where a child born to an illegal will not have the luxury of American citizenship. They have something like this in Ireland. At least that would make illegals reconsider having a child just to stay in the country and those tax dollars would no longer go to children born to illegal immigrants.

Social servants have more work too thanks to illegals: schools hire more teachers, hospitals more nurses etc....

Oh really? And how are these extra social services being paid for? By taxes. Taxes that illegals aren't paying - at least not by all of them. What it really is, is an extra burden on an overloaded system. Haven't  you heard how teachers in public schools have increasing class sizes, hospitals are definitely hurting for medical staff as it is. Though I'm sure there are hospitals that are fully staffed, there are a significant number that aren't. It isn't that there are poor nurses out of work - there just aren't enough. And what about programs like WIC? These social entities don't simply hire more people  because more are using the system - those, like social workers, just have more work heaped on top.

Appaerantly people do not research what it takes to get public assistance in this country.

You *have* to be a citizen. Even if you have children born here.... they will deport you, and keep the kid. Way too many people have found this out, and wouldnt dream of applying for assistance at the huge risk of losing their child.

It always amazes me how people say getting assistance is " too easy" or rigged to illegal aliens. These people have no freaking clue about how the system works, and are just parroting the same old trite BS that has been trotted about for years. With the reforms in the welfare system it simply is not true.

~ as far as "illegals" go.. just as soon as I hear Billy Bob at the Hojo ask me if I need more towels... then maybe we wont *need* "Illegals"

Your basic American is too damn spoiled and unwilling to do the hard jobs for little pay. So we will continue to need these people who will work hard as hell for very little pay, and no thanks.

If people are so concerned about illegals... then they need to go pick tomatoes for me. For maybe $20 a day working for 12 hours in the sun. No healthcare, no benifits, nothing but a hovel to live in that comes out of their paycheck.

Work with these people and actually learn their stories, and how their lives are effected and then try to be heartless.

I have to agree with Gwynvyd on this one. I do travel a lot and my expereince with America is that most of our children are taught to stay away from blue collar and dirty collar work. That said, and I've been bitching about this for years..... We NEED TO TAX ALL THE BILLIONS BEING WIRED OUT OF THE US EVERY YEAR...... < somewhere approaching $50 billion yearly now. Want to wire money back home? ok.... you can send $75.00 tax free, limit 2 per person per day - anything over that will be taxed at 30% and the money will be sent directly to your local schools and hospitals. START SCREAMING AT YOUR LOCAL POLITICIANS !

Well, I'm from a rural area, and I don't find that to be true.  people in this area work on farms and other hard labor jobs and they are white, black and a mixure of everything.

What I do notice is if you open up the job section of the local newspaper just about every job has the requirement to be able to speak spanish, not english.  I guess it is easier for people to learn spanish then it is for others to learn english

MSNBC just said that the State Dept has issued a warning to Americans thinking of traveling to Mexico because of the increasing violence along the border and they said that college students shouldn't go there on spring break.
Also they reported that the governor of Texas has requested 1,000 Federal Troops to be dispatched along the border of Texas. This was just on MSNBC.

FAIR: Barack Obama has promised a new mass amnesty:
This week, as a guest on a Spanish language radio show, President Obama stated his continued support for giving amnesty to 12 million illegal immigrants, which would force Americans looking for a job to compete with amnestied aliens for work.  (El Piolin Interview, February 18, 2009 and CBS4 — South Florida). … President Obama said: “We’re going to start by really trying to work on how to improve the current [immigration] system so that people who want to be naturalized, who want to become citizens … are able to do it; that it’s cheaper, that it’s faster, that they have an easier time in terms of sponsoring family members.” Following that, President Obama acknowledged what legal American workers already know intuitively — that amnesty is not in their best interest — but then endorsed amnesty anyway.  President Obama said: “And then we’ve got to have comprehensive immigration reform. … Politically it’s going to be tough.  It’s probably tougher now than it was, partly because of the fact that the economy has gotten worse.”  (El Piolin). According to the U.S. Department of Labor, over 11.6 million Americans are currently unemployed and the number of unemployed Americans has increased by 4.1 million over the past year.  (Bureau of Labor Statistics, January 2009).  Millions more have simply stopped looking for work.  Just last month, 598,000 Americans lost their jobs.  Particularly troubling among the unemployment data is the fact that certain minorities such as African-Americans are experiencing greater unemployment (12.6 percent) than the nation as a whole. President Obama also said his staff was working on amnesty already … Earlier this week, open-borders advocates suggested that they expect that Congress will debate amnesty legislation in the fall of 2009.  (NDN, February 20, 2009).  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s director of Hispanic media has confirmed the likely timing for debate as well.  (O Jornal, January 30, 2009). [Despite High Unemployment, Obama Puts Amnesty on the Agenda, FAIR Legislative Update, Federation for American Immigration Reform, February 23, 2009.]

Popeye the New York Slimes attacked our 2nd Amendment rights in an article about Mexico's crime wave they blamed it all on our gun rights.

Yet news reports talk about the repeated use of full-auto rifles, submachine guns, grenades and rocket launchers by the narcos against the Mexican cops and military.
I think there is a trouble a brewing thanks to Obama.

Gwyn, we don't need 20 million tomatoe pickers do we?
Who are you defending here?
You sound like a pro big business Republican who's in favor of cheap slave labor for business.
There's plenty of Americans who'd pick tomatoes for $100 per day.
"Labor" is only 6-8% of the cost of produce.
I'd have no problem paying 20 cents more per pound or more as long as I knew that U.S. Citizens were picking them at a good day's pay.

I don't know of any native born Americans who are anxious to spend every day, weather notwithstanding, shoveling horse shit. Every barn I know of depends on Mexican immigrants to take care of the animals. They ride in the trailers with the horses, sleep in the barns at shows to watch over them. Find me an out of work native willing to do this.

mefisto69 -> RE: Have The Courage To Enforce Immigration Law, Mr. Holder (2/26/2009 1:16:12 PM)

I frequently speak (in Spanish..... yes - my family came from Spain ) with illegals....... most of them have absolutely NO desire to become American citizens - their hopes are to send back lots of $$$$ - build a big house and retire pretty in their own country. They have absolutely no intention of buying into our system of government, lifestyle or taxation even though they aggressively take advantage of the education and health systems.

Now you know one who will.  My wife would too.

Every barn "depends" on paying less than minimum wage under the table?  There are plenty of barns that do not engage in such criminal activities as avoiding minimum wage and paying taxes on employees.  I am in the horse business.  I deal with a lot of horse barns.

You can't say that they are taking advantage of our system.... even if it is true.  That makes you an uncaring bigot for speaking the truth.  Mefisto, too many people refuse to believe that ANY of these people are anything but wonderful little model citizens who have birds singing around them everywhere they go.

I do not say illegality is not a problem. However, most illegals live in relative poverty meaning their consumption level of goods and services is minimal. The root cause of the problem is plutocracy: corporate profits need to be maximized. Bankers can run billion dollar scams and you call it creativity and paying for success while illegal slave labor brings US down?
