slvemike4u -> Dover Air Force Base....opinions on coverage (2/15/2009 10:55:53 PM)

President Obama was asked on Monday whether or not his administration would lift the ban currently in place concerning coverage of the fallen returning to the states.He replied he was "in the process of reviewing those policies".
Should the arrival be covered by the media?
Is the policy simply a case of out of sight out of mind for the public at large?
Or is the explanation of respecting the privacy of the families valid(the military claims that the low numbers of casulties leads to actual speculation concerning the soldier names )
Opinions please...

Some respect has to be given to the families but a simple way to keep the cost of our foreign entanglements fresh is to let people see cargo planes unloading flag draped coffins.

With the anti-military track record of media like the New York Times and CNN, I would prefer that Obama keep the curtain closed on showing graphic pictures of the flag drapped coffins of our fallen hero's.  Does anyone here really not understand the horror's of war;  do you really feel that our fellow citizens are not aware of the sacrifices being made every day by our warrior men and women?  Don't you think tha the families of those who have lost a child have to have their wounded hearts torn open again with pictures of fallen hero's on the tarmac?

I know there are those who would politicize everything and anything if they could only keep their hatred of George Bush alive in the minds of the world.  Their rantings, so full of sound and fury, are part of what happens in a democracy and, at times, holds great entertainment value.  However, opening up Dover would be over the top and show disrespect for these fallen hero's, in my view.

If some think that it is important as an anti-war piece, they can follow a body home. ask the family for permission, and take their pictures.  I think they deserve at least the same consideration given the children of a President.

       First, to the question of the OP about whether the media should have general access, I say no.  Respect for the families certainly isn't the only reason the policy is in place, but it is a damn good one.

      Ok.  Cost.  I'm relating very well to 'cost' this morning, as I sit here writing checks.  I see the cost of my electricity, but the benefit of that is all around me.  I'll feel the cost of the BestBuy bill when we cook something simple and boring on a night we'd both rather just call for a pizza, but then we'll have a game or two of Nazi Zombies and it won't be an issue.  There is the trash bill.  The benefit of that is what isn't piling up in my yard.  And I'll write the check for what I refer to in my budget as the 'dumbass fine.'  It's an old debt, that I never should have gotten myself into, but did.  It was a weird time.  It's money that should be going into savings, but if I stopped paying them, there would be far more expensive consequences.

       That's the problem with showing such powerful images of the "cost of our foreign entanglements."  Unless we provide equally vivid images of what we are getting/not getting in return, it becomes nothing but a tool of propaganda.

Sure, let them lift the ban as long as show the Dover picts in the corner, and this video in the main screen.

          Cold, please tell me you aren't clinging to the ridiculous notion that 9/11 had anything to do with Iraq?

And pretending that no one dies in Iraq is propoganda as well. The Pentagon taking years to release even remotely accurate casualty figures is propoganda. We are come far too close to a situation where the majority can support imperial actions by my government simply because it does not directly affect them and they never see anything but a shot of a dead soldier's boot camp photo on the late news. Let the people see the honor guard at slow march maybe just maybe less of my comrades will need that service at Dover then.

housesub4you -> RE: Dover Air Force Base....opinions on coverage (2/16/2009 3:19:22 PM)

They have let them be shown before, it is only when the war is not supported by the people; does the President step in and stop the press.  Bush allowed the press till the pubic turned against the war

It's Bush's war let the cost be shown once again.

housesub4you -> RE: Dover Air Force Base....opinions on coverage (2/16/2009 3:25:04 PM)

Well if the war is soo rightous, why did Bush allow the press to show the caskets of the dead, until the people started opposing the war and he stopped the press.

The families support the viewing of the caskets (just check your news when Bush stopped this program) only Bush could not take the PR onslaught for people dying for his lies(WMD, you know all that crap the GOP says does not matter)

         No.  It is the United States' war, as will be any additional fronts or excursions President Obama opens or takes us into.

This thread is too sick for me to even look at anymore.Using the bodies of dead warriors to make a political statement...jeeezz..

The previous administration for starters.

housesub4you -> RE: Dover Air Force Base....opinions on coverage (2/16/2009 4:00:13 PM)

Of course since they are the dead of your GOP war, Bush did allow this until the truth for his BS war became known

and as always the GOP has "no comment" how fitting

housesub4you -> RE: Dover Air Force Base....opinions on coverage (2/16/2009 4:03:49 PM)

Ahhh the war started with Bush, with his lies and now the GOP run from the truth and blame everyone else for Bush's WAR!!!  Show me 1 vote where the GOP voted against BUSH and his war?????

And when you check the vote record...you will see Obama voted against this war.

        Got a link for that?  I'd love to see how he voted against it, when he wasn't in the Senate when that vote was taken.

Who in this world is suggesting their bodies be used ? Pictures of the caskets of our war dead are the visual aspects of the facts of war.

Any political 'statement' that can be made is in the politics of the viewer and those responsible can neither hide or alter those facts.

I agree with those here...these 9/11 jumpers and victims have nothing whatever to do with the continuing and seemingly never-ending war and the war dead...in Iraq.
