Status: offline 		There are at least two or three revolutions each year in France. Where have you been the past two and a half centuries   ? Demos can be a bit of a shag but at the same time it's admirable that in these countries, the people go down in the streets to protest, instead of whining within the confines of their moots-surrounded homes. Besides, nothing like a little popular uprising to justify the higher taxes to fund the police budget :-) .

Do you consider that something to be proud of? I ask because I don't understand your attitude about it. That's not my idea of an ideal society.

Whilst violence is reprehensible, I admit to admiring a citizenry that has not bowed in front of the state and that takes to the streets when it feels the need to smack its government down. It works, in France: trust me, the amount of shit the U.S. Government and businesses have gotten away with, no way would it have passed over there.

That's why God invented the vote, so that we could have peaceful revolutions. Not that I don't believe that firearms are the gold backing the paper (or electronic) ballot - I do. One would hope though that no nation or state were in a state of constant revolution.

Sanity,  unless I'm misreading you, you don't seem to be drawing a distinction between protest demonstrations and all-out revolution. I think, all kidding aside, those of us in this thread with whom you are disagreeing are (for the most  part) drawing such a distinction. In which case, we're disagreeing about 2 different things.

.....sometimes, the only way to get the message through to a government is to take to the streets. No-one needs to get shot, but they do need to put the shoes to the pavement. Government can get too comfy sometimes.

Hmmm... well, the patio's about 450 square feet... so that's, what, about a million right there if I'm doing the math right... couple million more down in the woods by the creek, and whatever's left over can spill out onto the front yard. If we don't invite the anarchists, it should work. All they'll do is complain anyway, so we can leave them out.

Yeah, I think it's all good. Parking might be a problem, but if the Greens carpool, I think it should all work out just fine.

I think people have to be desperate in order to riot. That's where I'm coming from. Happy, prosperous people don't hit the streets and bust heads and  destroy other people's property. I would hope there is never a need for it...

Peaceful gatherings, yes. Those are called "parties" and they're great.

But riots? Revolutions? I hope I have better things to be doing, now and for the rest of my days.
