OneMoreWaste -> RE: Online Degrees. (1/27/2009 9:05:01 PM)

Damn, I was just looking that up in another window [8D]

Journalism is dead. Have you *seen* the shit the AP publishes these days? It's like, totally OMFG. [:'(]

As everyone else has said, do your homework before choosing an online school, because there are more crooks than craftsmen. And as kittin brought up, don't forget the *social* factor of attending actual classes, even if they are in Souf Carolinia.

If I were in your position (how I wish I were!) I'd pick up some votech welding or machining classes, learn how to make some shit.

popeye1250 -> RE: Online Degrees. (1/27/2009 10:20:34 PM)

Thanks everyone, after reading all your replies I've come to the realisation that I don't really need a "degree" in Journalism to be a better writer.
I think maybe 12 or 15 semester hours would do the trick!
A refresher course or two in English, some creative writing courses, basics for me like *punctuation,*  and we'll see what else they have available.
I (think) I'm a decent writer but I do recognize that I have some weaknesses.
And I'm under no illusion that I'd ever make a living out of it, it would just be for my own satisfaction.
It's been decades since I've worked on sentance structure, "prepositions", dangling modifiers, adjectives etc and I'm pretty rusty at that stuff now!
And yes Onemore waste, I have seen the shit that's "on the wires!"
One thing they do that always bugs me is when they say; "I have a friend that..."
It's; "I have a friend *who*..."
So, I'll take a ride over to Coastal Carolina U. this week to see what they have available for people like me.

That's an arguable stance, actually.

The two arguments:

A 'friend' is a thing, not a person. Usually the word 'friend' when used as a noun refers to a person, however, since it is not universally a person using 'that' instead of 'who' would be technically correct.

By elevating another noun to 'friend' status you make it qualify as a person in all cases, thereby making 'who' the correct term, not 'that' when referring to them. 'Friend' is interchangeable with the word 'person' for instances where it would affect diction/syntax.

Personally I don't think it really matters... I just love matters of linguistics and rules of language like this [:D] it's an intellectual pursuit that does nothing but make me giggle at society.

Yeah, that's the kind of things I need to brush up on!
It's been a long time.

They're also the kinds of things that every teacher (except the hard-core composition ones!) [:)]will tell you to completely disregard

If you're going back to school to learn just for the sake of learning, then accreditation doesn't matter so much.  I think it's GREAT to want to improve your education! I've taken several online classes over the last several years and I've gotten something out of all of them. Well worth the time investment! Kudo's to you for taking the steps necessary to improve your over-all, general knowledge. :D

Dnomyar -> RE: Online Degrees. (1/28/2009 7:27:47 AM)

For those of you in the U.S. If your unemployed go to your local county extension and apply for schooling. I went to one here in michigan and they paid for my college degree. They paid for my books and classes. I was 47 at the time.

Check places like http://www.onlinedegreeobserver.com/ or other review sites for online schools.

Who'd hire you? Depends on who you apply to, basically.

Your degree is just a way to open a door.
A degree is just a way to have more opportunities to work inside an air-conditioned environment (Yeah, those Forestry Degrees skew it!)
Any accredited degree says you can complete what you start.

Of course, you can go to www.themonestary.org and get your Doctorate (or Jedi Knight certificate) right now for prices form $8 to $30.

Crush, I'm out of the work force and happily retired.
I already have a degree.
Funny, it didn't help me get a job that I had applied for many years ago.
Being a Coast Guard veteran got me that job.
All the lady who was interviewing me wanted to talk about was what I did in the Coast Guard!
Says me; "Oh, I have a degree in Business Administration."
Says she; "That's nice, so what else did you do in the Coast Guard?"
She couldn't have cared less about my degree.
And on my first day on the job my boss told me,"forget whatever they taught you in college, we're going to teach you *our* way and they did.
I thought to myself; Shit! I think I just wasted four years of my life!"
Given the choice between the two I think I'd rather be a military veteran than only have a college degree.
Look at all the govt. jobs these days that "require" a degree.
Twenty years ago those jobs were "secretarial" jobs!
Today they pay $80k and have "titles" but, they're still "secretarial" jobs, paperpushing jobs.
It's called "feathering your nest." Bueracracy run wild!
Those jobs should be paying $40k per year and no "titles."
They simply don't "require" a degree to do them!
I do think that all this "degree" stuff has obviously gotten out of control.
If colleges and unis had their way *everyone* would have a "degree" and there'd be no-one to empty the wastebaskets and mop the floor.
And, most importantly there's *the law of supply and demand.*
This economy will chug along very nicely on having 20% of the populace being college educated.
We simply don't need 50-60% of the population having a degree.
Where are the jobs for them?
We put a man on the moon when only 15% of high school grads went on to college.
For every 100,000 blue collar workers we lose we also lose 30-40,000 white collar jobs. We really do need to get out of these "free trade" deals!
As I've said before I could take out an ad in the paper for 100 house painters and I garauntee you 30-40% of the respondants are going to have degrees in sociology, psychology and political science.
As for me, I'll be doing this for my own knowledge and to review a lot of things that I've simply forgotten over the decades.
I think we really do need refresher courses as we get older just to maintain our skills and also we need to keep learning new things to keep our minds sharp.

If you like to write and just want to make it into a hobby and/or get practice and exposure, I believe there are dozens of web sites now that basically take freelancer content and try to turn it into a revenue model. I have no experience with this kind of thing but know it exists. Maybe some others have done this.

Sally Struthers made me the success that I am today.

myotherself -> RE: Online Degrees. (1/28/2009 11:08:22 AM)

I have almost finished my online degree in maths with the Open University in the UK.  I have a degree already in physics and engineering, but wanted to do maths because I enjoy it.

It has been so valuable - it helped me get into teaching and many times I've heard from prospective employers that they highly rate online degrees (accredited ones, that is) because they understand the commitment as student has to make to keep up with good quality academic work as well as working a day job.  And from my experience of both full-time and distance learning, the amount of work you're expected to do, and the quality of the work you're expected to deliver, does not differ.
