Hippiekinkster -> Les Beatles! (1/27/2009 1:14:27 AM)

Only a few days until Feb. 9th, the 45th anniversary of the Fab Four appearing on Ed Sullivan.  45 years. Buddha, I'm old. [8D]

If any of you think there was ever a band better than the Beatles, you are soooooooooooooooooooo wrong.  You just are. That's all there is to it.

And, coming up around my B'day is the 40th anniversary of Woodstock.

Beatles rule.

The beatles could barely carry a tune let alone play their instruments. They wrote a ton of trash songs. I did meet my first wife because of the beatles.

guess you never forgave the beatles..lol

Good...yes, but best band ever? I guess that's a conclusion determined by personal preference, I don't know that I would ever proclaim any particular musical group as number one. However, that all being said, the Beatles do get my nod for being one of the most influential musical groups ever, as they did usher in a profound change in music and culture that may never be matched again. And yes Hippie, I recall, although vaguely, when they were on TV that night...lol. Guess I should go dust off some albums and fire up the turntable (walks off humming yellow submarine).

SilverWulf -> RE: Les Beatles! (1/27/2009 5:06:38 AM)

Aren't they all dead yet?

Geez, get over it and wake the fuck up, they sucked then and the recordings haven't improved over the years no matter how many times they have been 'digitally remastered'.

It had to happen; Hippie posts a thread exalting the music of one of the best bands in the world EVAH, a band that pretty much invented pop music (in its noble sense), and some sinister nay-sayers crawl out from under the stones to trash them.

So, Mr. Musical Expert, who do you deem worthy of your musical admiration? I'm curious.

lol just want to check how many of their albums have been digitally remastered? I mean you are obviously the authority on the matter.

Sorry I adore the beatles, I have all there lp's and videos and far too many books. They have influenced so much in the music world (seriously look up beatles chord progression)

Whether you 'like' their songs is rather irrelevent you cant argue the impact that they had.

cjan -> RE: Les Beatles! (1/27/2009 6:37:04 AM)

I always preferred the Stones, however, no one with any knowledge of musical history, or appreciation for same, can deny the Beatles influence. "Sgt. Pepper"changed everything. I remember that summer it came out. Pop music ( and a generaion ) were never the same. The Beach Boys ( actually, Brian Wilson's ) "Pet Sounds " was as revolutionary, but, perhaps, before it's time. And then in R&B there was Marvin and "What's Going On ?"... all milestones.

Dnomyar -> RE: Les Beatles! (1/27/2009 6:37:38 AM)

Like any other band they were influnced by other artist. To bad like other bands that their egos got in the way of them staying together.

Termyn8or -> RE: Les Beatles! (1/27/2009 7:19:09 AM)

Trash the Beatles all you want, but my opinion remains the same.

I have certain criteria with which I judge bands, and one of the most weighty in the mix is versatiliy. So many bands, everything they do sounds the same. IMO that did NOT work well for Metallica doing mellow. But the Beatles could.

One thing that doesn't impress me much is radical endings, like that of Strawberry Fields. I was similarly unimpressed with the ending of The Who's Baba o' Reily. However the body of the song is more important.

Listen to the difference between Paperback Writer and I Am The Walrus for diversity. You can hardly believe they were done by the same group.

While I don't like every Beatles song, one thing they did deliver was a variety of different styles. Every time you opened up a new, unheard Beatles album, it did not sound like the last one. Then when the breakup came, I saw the diversification of musical ideas. George, Paul and Ringo all did their own thing. It is possible that the root cause of the breakup was musical differences. If that led to something more, oh well. But when you have four guys sitting around figuring out new music and it just doesn't click, what do you do ? You break up.

Bash them all you want, doesn't bother me, but as someone mentioned, what band would be the alternative ?

To be honest, by the numbers there are percentage wise more Judas Priest songs I like than that of the Beatles. But they did not have the diversity. Get tired of Halford, put the disk away and load another. Get tired of the Beatles and just wait a few minutes, let it play and you will hear something different.

That's the way I see it.

They sucked? Well that explains why no one ever bought their music and why 45 years later no one has ever heard of them.

Yea, I wish I could suck like that too.

So who do you think is a really good group then?

Termyn8or -> RE: Les Beatles! (1/27/2009 8:40:24 AM)

Dn, I think when you get big like that, ego is part of the package. Talent feeds the ego and ego feeds the talent. Once they were a hit of the first magnitude, their egos fed each others', and I think that stops for some. When they don't click anymore, when they are going a totally different direction, oh well. Of course then success is in their hands alone.

Many good bands have split up over the years. Indeed ego may be a major factor, but without it they probably would have never gotten so far.

The Beatles are most certainly one of the greatest bands ever but the greatest?  Sorry.  That distinction belongs to (it's a tie) U2 and Pink Floyd.

Paul is dead, man.  He blew his mind out in car (he hadn't noticed that the light had changed) on wenesday morning as 5:00... or something like that.

Most Seriously.  I was ahead of the curve with U2, I've been listening to them since before they hit the big time courtesy of a friend who spent some time in Ireland and sent me some tapes with a note attached... "you've got to check this out!"
