Termyn8or -> RE: Les Beatles! (1/27/2009 7:19:09 AM)

Trash the Beatles all you want, but my opinion remains the same. I have certain criteria with which I judge bands, and one of the most weighty in the mix is versatiliy. So many bands, everything they do sounds the same. IMO that did NOT work well for Metallica doing mellow. But the Beatles could. One thing that doesn't impress me much is radical endings, like that of Strawberry Fields. I was similarly unimpressed with the ending of The Who's Baba o' Reily. However the body of the song is more important. Listen to the difference between Paperback Writer and I Am The Walrus for diversity. You can hardly believe they were done by the same group. While I don't like every Beatles song, one thing they did deliver was a variety of different styles. Every time you opened up a new, unheard Beatles album, it did not sound like the last one. Then when the breakup came, I saw the diversification of musical ideas. George, Paul and Ringo all did their own thing. It is possible that the root cause of the breakup was musical differences. If that led to something more, oh well. But when you have four guys sitting around figuring out new music and it just doesn't click, what do you do ? You break up. Bash them all you want, doesn't bother me, but as someone mentioned, what band would be the alternative ? To be honest, by the numbers there are percentage wise more Judas Priest songs I like than that of the Beatles. But they did not have the diversity. Get tired of Halford, put the disk away and load another. Get tired of the Beatles and just wait a few minutes, let it play and you will hear something different. That's the way I see it. T
