I had an appointment at the V.A. Clinic today (the 26th) to get my test results after taking cholesterol meds for the last six weeks.
I was taking half of a tiny little pill all that time every night.
The Pharmacist lady a Ph.D told me my results were amazing.
I went from 231 down to 143!
And HDL the good cholesterol is 34.
She told me that the new meds that I'm taking to control the cholesterol also helps prevent Alzheimer's disease.
She said she's seen young people with one side of their mouth drooping down because of a stroke caused by high cholesterol.
So, no matter how old you are get it checked!
Oh, and my BP was .....120 over 80 due to all the walking I do!

I suffer from High Blood Pressure, and as a bigger guy you'd think I'd have cholesterol issues. Last I got it checked, though (about 3/4ths of a year ago), my doctor practically hit the floor at the results I was actually on the low end of 'healthy' for both types.

Blood Pressure's another issue. I've reduced caffeine recently, so that helps, but it is still around 130-140 over 90-95 when I don't take medication. With it, BP gets to the low end of acceptable, too :)

Jesus, good work! Damned good work! Congratulations. I've always been so lucky on cholestrol; I can't get mine above 165. I think the highest it's been in the last 20 years was 163, and I eat eggs, butter, and cheese every day. Very fortunate. That's one I probably won't ever have to worry about.

Good for you, popeye!   In addition to lowering cholesterol intake in foods I take fish oil capsules every day.  The ones with the coating to prevent the "fish burps" are worth spending a little bit more for me. The garlic tablets kept giving me heartburn and so far this method is working fine.

There be some evidence that low cholesterol is about as bad, statistically, as high cholesterol.

My last test, I was 210; HDL was 65. Low LDLs and VLDLs, as well as low triglycerides.

Last BP measurement was 112/68. but I'm on Diovan. And oxycontin. Mellow.

And, of course, the daily "Truckin'"

I take some pills for blood pressure and suggest you try to keep with the daily dosage which is tough sometimes.   Lowering salt intake seems to help but there are also studies that show no benefit from lower dietary salt.  The primary way to lower blood pressure that I have expeienced is weight loss and excercise.   It's amazing how that pressure drops when those pounds start to come off.

Yes, I agree but they can't make any money selling you stuff to take everyday if you do this.

Yup, I have a very healthy daily intake, so eat plenty of toms, veggies and most of all, olives - despite the fact I am very overweight, I have good readings for chol. bp and glucose, and my doctor reckons that it's the olives I eat every day that is benefitting me, along with moderate exercise (I don't mean to the fridge and back but enough to get the cardio pumping).

DUDE!

these pills are hogwash.

be sure to check your liver.    lipitor was killing my liver.

a proper diet will do some good.    the more pills one eats the more unintended effects happen.

Damndest thing....I have been an athlete my entire life....I work out 5 days a week with an average of 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weight training, I monitor my eating....stay slim and STILL have high cholesterol and high blood pressure!
Heredity sometimes has a lot to do with numbers!...I take lipitor, zestiril and an aspirin a day....My hgl is much better than good because of my exercise regimen but, my "other" cholesterol will probably never be in the range the Doctors wish to see it. My B/P is now "normal" but, it is more "better living through science" than it is anything else.

Yeah, corysub, each of which I'm working on :) Exercise is stagnating because I've misplaced my DDR cd, but I am 'eating to lose' as it were, between 700 and 1000 calories less than it would take to stay at my current weight, and eating about twice the amount it would take to stay at my current weight once a week.

It's really working, too

I'm going down to the beach here shortly for a 2-3 mile walk.
Try to go for a walk everyday!
It's one of the best things you can do for yourself!

Hah, I walk to class every day...

'bout 2 miles worth, though not at the same time.

When my BP became a problem I was walking an average of 5 every day.

DDR is high-impact, dynamic cardio and it's fun :D It builds coordination, strength, and general health more than walking does Plus, I can do it on my own, and with friends. If I'm feeling particularly competative I can compete against myself, or I can just do a workout set that I've made of songs that I enjoy set in a good, dynamic set. (2 'warm-up' songs, 3 'high impact' songs, 1 'slow' song, 4 'high impact' songs, 2 'low impact' songs, 1 'slow' song, 2 'high impact' songs, for about 23 to 25 minutes)

In general the benefits of non-cardio, low-impact exercise aren't really well documented in regards to increasing heart-health (and, hence, BP), and exercise doesn't actually increase weight loss in any significant way (however, it DOES help keep lost weight off).

Silver Mark, genetics are a major factor in all of these conditions. I first had to take blood pressure medicine at age 29!  And I have a decent diet with limited amounts of alcohol and no drugs beyond the occasional herb.  You are doing the right thing taking care of yourself and monitoring the numbers with your doctor.

Not necessarily.  I'm a medical lab tech, so I've done a gazillion cholesterol tests in my lifetime.  Body shape and size really has nothing to do with cholesterol levels....I've seen many obese people with great or maybe only slightly elevated cholesterols, and many scrawny anorexic-looking people with extremely elevated cholesterol.  Of course, diet and exercise are important to both weight and cholesterol control, but in the long run, it's how your body is genetically programmed to metabolize cholesterol.

I typed this before reading SilverMark's post....case in point.
