Depends on how much of your BDSM/Kink is based in fantasy.
I don't really get into all the "Bow down, you're my slave!!!" stuff... so online play seems pretty ridiculous to me.

But I could see it being appealing to people for whom it's all about being outside of reality. All that stuff is just as fake in person, so why not do it online?
*Shrug*

Im more about the D/s than the BDSM/kink stuff to be honest and therefore you can totally create that in a virtual way. You dont need to be physically close to have a power dynamic

This comes closest to why I used to limit myself to online relationships.  I was coming out of a long term marriage and not ready yet to "expose" my dark side in person.  Dating was so foreign to me after having been married for 20 years.  I could only truly be myself online and eventually on the phone.  It was the ultimate in "safe sex" for me, at that time.  I've had quite a few pen-pals that I've only known online and I think of their friendships fondly.  But it never did completely fulfill me; it allowed me to take the steps I felt comfortable taking.  And, I could "turn it on" and "turn it off" simply by not going back online.

YMMV (Your mileage may vary.)
